I know I’m old, I just don’t usually feel old…and when I think of things like this about the cost of things, it definitely makes me feel old!!!
Right after college, back in Houston, Bambolino's pizza @ Richmond and Montrose: double slice of pepperoni, 2 Miller High Life tallboys from the c-store next door = $1 each
When I was in college we'd get a combo fried rice at Timmy Chan's on Scott street for literally less than 3 bucks and it was enough to eat for 2 whole days. Now I'm sure it's like 9.99 for half the portion. Anyway BUY BITCOIN
What year did you graduate? I did work that would make a grown man cry, manual labor at the ports. I feel old, just saying that ****…
I recommend The Original Super Burger, if you're ever in Willis. I've been there once, and it was like 8 years ago, but it was so good. Hope it hasn't changed...
Timmy Chan's combination fried rice and their garlic chicken on a stick or whatever it was called were gifts from Heaven. Timmy Chan's, Kim Son, Fu Kim and another Downtown Chinese restaurant I forget the name of, but I think the buffet was $2.99 or $3.99 -- it was a great time to be alive (even though the meals probably shaved 5 years off my life). Did you work at the Houston Ship Channel? I remember I worked for a big shipping company, and we had to load 3 of those UPS/FedEx delivery truck-sized trucks to make deliveries to businesses. Packages come flying by and you had to pull them and put them in the right location on the right truck or you get yelled at by the drivers the next day. It was only 4 hours of work (from around 3am to 7am, I think), but it was 4 hours of non-stop hell (especially when one particular coffee shop got their coffee shipments). I talked to a guy I worked with there and he agreed it was hell, but it was nothing like the job he had working at the Ship Channel. lol. I was thinking if this is hell, then that must've been something else.
Hard to believe that Five Guys used to regularly top Washingtonian Magazine's "Cheap Eats" list back when it was just the original location in Arlington, VA.
I actually ate there Saturday night after a concert, first time in years. Line in the drive through was 12 cars deep at 1030pm. Total for a double meat burger meal, chicken sandwich meal and a kids tenders meal (for my wife) was 29 and change. I certainly blinked at the total but whatever, it is what it is and I was hungry. Market sets the price and those prices weren’t hurting the demand.
Back in my college days, the 99 cent jack in the box two tacos were hunger savers. The whole crew would eat well off 10 bucks total together. Nowadays Jack tacos can range from 1.29 to 1.59 depending on what location you go to. We would have starved At Timmy's that thing is 12 bucks now. Add some wings and you're pushing 20. Crazy. Use to get 6 wings and the combo rice for 10 bucks a decade ago
Fast food certainly isn't "cheap" anymore. Prices going up over time is to be expected, but the bigger issue is that the gap between prices at fast food places and places that are a notch or two better in quality is much smaller than it used to be. Folks would rather pay a few extra bucks and eat something better. Nowadays fast food is chosen more out of necessity when people are in a jam and the options are limited because it's late at night and nothing else is open. Fast food sales margins are as razor thin as they ever were, and they can't increase their prices any further or people will completely stop going because what would be the point?
Agreed, the only reason I hit a fast-food place anymore is the convenience and speed...........if I have time to sit and order I do, but often times I am in a rush it's just easier to drive thru. The Wendy`s by my work is over $10 bucks for #1.............I remember it being like $3.99 when I was in HS
Me: "I'll take three Texas doubles, no catsup or mayo.... a biggie fry and a large Coke" 1998: "That will be $5.00" 2023: " That will be $20.95"
Those were the days---- Gimme $50 and I had gas for the week and my food costs were covered for the week. There was almost always enough left over for Gatorade after flag football and pick up basketball - usually could swing a dinner date too.
