What if we get the 9th pick and Cleveland gets the first pick? They call up and say we will give you Mihm, Andre Miller and the first pick for your 9th pick and Steve Francis and Maurice Taylor. C - Cato, Mihm, Collier PF- Thomas, Griffin, Mihm SF- Rice, Thomas, Morris SG- Mobley, Torres, Morris PG- Miller, Norris, Brown ***** and the first pick in the draft ***** this would give us even more value for further trades If not, what would you change to accept this? I did not check salaries so I don't know that this would work. Just trying to find the Stevie threshold.
BBALL freak, we would only have one scorer capable of exploding. Mobley. I understand Andre's a good passer and stuff like that, but it seems to me we would be taking a few steps back, unless of course our draft pick lands us something really special. Oh yeah...I would sure be depressed if we ended up with #9!
Memphis' pick is top 5 protected this summer, according to NBAdraft.net, top 3 next year, and unprotected in 2004. I'm pretty sure Memphis will keep their pick this year... It would make sense to trade down to the #3 or even #5 spot, taking Woods, Gooden or Wagner, or picking up another draft pick, and trade for someone like Odom, Lewis, Swift, Diop, Mihm, etc. For instance, LAC has Atlanta's pick... and if they ended up at #5, and traded us Odom and their #5 for our #1, and then we take Dujuan Wagner, that would be perfect. Or, Cleveland, if they ended up at #5, and gave us either Diop or Mihm, and their #5 for our #1, and we took Dujuan Wagner, I'd like that even better. Or, Memphis, if they ended up at #3, but want Ming, and they traded us Swift and their #3 pick, so they could move up to get Ming, and we took Woods, that would be excellent. Then we'd have 2 PFs to trade for a center. Or, the best deal ... Chicago, if they ended up at #2, and wanted Williams real bad, and they traded us Fizer and their #2, then to be honest, I'd trade that down again to Cleveland or LAC or Memphis, and get even another player. The problem is that the only "can't miss" superstar player seems to be Jason Williams, and unless we move Stevie to the 2 and trade Cuttino, I don't see us taking Williams, unless its for a future trade, and it would send all the wrong signals to Steve when it comes to contract time. And Ming will take a few years to develop, and we need someone to develop in the next couple years, not 3-5 years out. And I believe that most players could be had for a 3-5 pick (not established superstars, of course, but maybe some up and comers). So, it obviously seems best to trade the pick for someone who's dying for Williams or Ming, although I bet Houston would nab Ming, if they had the chance...
If we get the #1 pick, by all means trade it with either Mo Taylor or Glen Rice's contract for Lamar Odom. I doubt Mo would go back to the Clipps.
Draft Ming. He might not turn out to be a superstar center, but a superstar center only comes around once every six or so years, so I think you take the chance. Then you move Eddie to the 3 and keep everyone else (except Walt and Langhi, and maybe cut Collier if you can resign Willis for not too much). We would be two deep at every position.
TRADE IT!! We are already talented, and we could definitely get Odom or Rashard Lewis for it. I am SURE that the Clips would be more than happy to give up Odom because then they'll draft Jason Williams and let McInnis leave. The Rockets shouldn't even have to think twice about whether to trade it or not.
The best scenario would be if Shawn Marion demanded a trade and we got the first pick. We could pick Yao Ming, and trade him to Phoenix since they are desperate for a center. Then we would get Shawn Marion in return, who is one of the most underrated players in the NBA. The positives: Shawn Marion would fill our need at the small forward position. He has solid defense, and he would help our rebounding significantly. He could also back up Cuttino Mobley at the shooting guard position. In my opinion, Shawn Marion is better than Lewis or Odom. He gives our team what we need most: rebounding and defense. He would be the best fit on this team than anyone else in the draft. Imagine a lineup of: Cato, Griffin, Marion, Mobley, and Francis. That is a just an awesome team. I am dreaming about it, but the chances are low that it will happen...
I am all for trading the #1 pick. How about a sign/trade with Seattle MoT/pick(#1) to Seattle for Rashard Lewis/Pick(early teens) We could also swap picks with Memphis to satisfy next year and ship that pick/Cato to Atlanta for Ratliff?
#1 overall pick + Eddie Griffin + Kelvin Cato = Tim Duncan? Rockets F - Rice/Morris F - Thomas/Taylor C - Duncan/Collier G - Francis/Norris G - Mobley/Torres Spurs F - Qyntel Woods?/Bowen F - Griffin/Rose C- Robinson/Cato G - Parker/Daniels G - S.Smith/C.Smith
If the Clips could get Brand for their #2 overall pick, the Rockets should be able to get something better than Odom in return. I am still wondering where this Odom fascination stems from. Does he have a big role with the Clippers suddenly winning? No... He also comes with some baggage as well. Maybe there's some way we could trade junk + the #1 for McDyess? Assuming McDyess shows us something in these next few weeks.
The Spurs could not possible do better then that deal. Eddie and Jason for Duncan? That said, my heart says no, but my brain says HELL YEAH! I want to see how good Eddie can become and I want to see that in our ugly pj's.
Shouldn't we crash the BBS first? How about we do this: Let's assume that Chicago, Atlanta, the Clippers, Golden State, Toronto, Miami, Denver, Cleveland (if they decide to not pay Miller the max) & Washington wants Jason Williams. And then, let's assume that Atlanta, Toronto, Washington, Memphis, Phoenix, Sacramento, Dallas, Denver, Cleveland, New York, Miami, & Orlando wants Yao Ming. The second place team will determine what direction we go. Now, assuming one of these teams will be the second pick, let's determine what the teams have, that we want & need, in exchange for swapping picks. Lottery Teams Chicago: Curry or exchange the Drew obligation for their unconditional #1 pick next year. Atlanta: Dermarr Johnson, Ratliff Clippers: Odom, Kandi, etc. Golden State: nothing Toronto: Clark(agree to not match our offer, or to do a sign & trade) & MoPete Miami: Jones, but they would have to take Rice in exchange Denver: McDyess-do we really need him, though? Cleveland: Mihm, Doleac, Jumaine Jones Memphis: Battier, Swift, release from next year's #1 pick obligation Phoenix: Marion (I can't see them giving him up), Joe Johnson New York: nothing On the Bubble Washington: Kwame, Jahidi Indiana: Artest, Bender, Harrington, Brad Miller-I doubt they would trade with us. They don't need to. Charlotte: Magloire Philadelphia: nothing Non-Lottery Teams Sacramento: Turkoglu & Pollard Dallas: LaFrentz Orlando: Mike Miller, Pat Garrity, #1 draft picks Obviously, the lottery teams would be involved in the first trade. We'd just have to hope that Golden State, New York, Indiana, & Philadelphia didn't get the second pick, & since this is our dream, they wouldn't. Since our weakest areas are at center & SF, I would try to get one of those players first & draft picks second. We'd have to be able to make a trade with the second team, in order to maximize our return for the #1 overall pick. We could then trade down from the #2 spot, with any team. Imo, the best scenario would be for Memphis to get the second pick. We could then do a Battier for KT/Collier trade in order to swap picks. We might even be able to get them to accept the Toronto #1 pick as compensation for the #1 pick we owe them next year. They could then choose Yao Ming with the first pick. Then we could swap the second pick with any team that has a center we want. That could include Chicago for Curry, Washington for Kwame, Clippers for a Cato/Kandi swap, Toronto for Clark, Charlotte for Magloire, or Cleveland for Mihm. There would be lots of combinations. But, we have to get the #1 overall pick first.
Why would we trade for McDyess? We'd then have 4 PF's, plus he's not healthy. His career might be hurt by his inury, like Danny Manning and Penny to some extent. Since the Clippers get Atlanta's pick if it's not in the top 3, which it won't be, then how about this: #1 pick Glen Rice for Odom Future non-top 3 pick But that's dreaming, because Rudy would never trade Rice. The Clipps would do this deal because Rice's contract is just 2 years, he provides veteran leadership, 3-pt shooting and a good post game, and of course, by getting Yao Ming, they can play hardball with Kandi (restricted FA). If we have the #1 and #14, then we should look at getting rid of either MoT's or Rice's contract.
