What would the compensation be if we signed RFA Matt Schaub?

I agree anyone with out "upside" and an age of 28 yrs or less does this team no good.

whether it is because Vick sucked (before this season) as a passer or because the Falcons win when Schaub plays...take your pick. Schaub does a better job with the offense when he played while Vick was injured. They did pretty well with him playing QB. You probably haven't seen much of him this season because Vick is pretty injury free, but years past he's been more than capable as a backup.

Ok, so the guy's a hype machine... unproven... small armed...

Next question is, and maybe the admins could change the thread title to this:

If not Carr (of course) then who?

My guy reaction is: go for broke. If we have a killer draft and sign 3 - 6 good free agents... ya know, if we can get a QB that's good, young, but not a rookie, why not?

The only guy's I could think of that fit that bill were Schaub and Leftwich/Gerrard (whomever loses that battle). I immediately rejected the second notion because they're division rivals and we routinely upset them.

I say we draft a QB (Kolb? Troy Smith?), sign Jeff Garcia (whom we contacted last year), and let Garcia/Rosenfels hold down the fort until the Drafted One is ready to play. And this time, let's sit our QB of the future on the bench and make damn sure he's ready to contribute before throwing him into the fire. (Translation: Don't break this one, Texans staff.)

While I don't object to your plan, Young, ML and Cutler all have beat out the vets, and if anything sitting them would slow their development IMO.

You play the guys who are your best players, rookie or not.

If it were Sage Rosenfels coming in after Vick looking like the prototypical QB it'd be close to the same thing, saying how he's making the offense move and throwing to the WRs and stuff...I'd pass on Matt Shaub.

Then again he could have a Matt Hasselbeck type effect but I still wouldnt chance it with Matt Shaub on a 1st day pick. Texans need to go ahead and keep their picks, no Tony Hollings-Jason Babin-Philip Buchanon type moves.

I think what we would need is a veteran QB who is willing to mentor the young QB, basically what Jon Kitna did for Carson Palmer. In the situation of Kurt Warner in both NY and Arizona and Plummer in Denver those veteran QB's had it in their heads they were gonna fight off the rookie for playing time.

Well, just off the top of my head: Philip Rivers, Eli Manning, Charlie Frye, Carson Palmer, Jay Cutler, Chris Simms, Tom Brady, and Tim Rattay all had at least half a season to watch and learn before getting the starting nod, and I honestly think it helped them, not hurt them. Throwing a QB into the fire before they're ready is risky, because you can damage them permanently. After what poor Carr has endured, I'm willing to treat our next franchise QB with kid gloves. Hopefully, I'm not alone in this thinking.

pennington, mcnair, romo, hasselback, too - even brett favre (all far better examples than frye, simms and rattay :))

i think it's dependent on the specific circumstance. for all the guys mentioned above, we could match each of them with players who started right away and succeeded (manning, brees, roethlisberger, carr - just kidding). there is no set blueprint; the player, the team... a lot of differing and unique factors should go into the decision.

Simms, Brady, and Frye should be taken off because they were not franchise QB picks. Also, those teams had Brees (Rivers), Bledsoe (Brady), Kitna (Palmer), Plummer (Cutler) and Warner (Eli, ML) already there. If the Texans trade or cut Carr and draft a QB early, it isn't going to be easy or cheap to get a decent vet in there.

Also, I don't think it would have done either the Titans or Cardinals, or VY or ML, any good to keep sitting them. If the guy makes the team better with him in there, you play him. I believe in VY's case it is especially important to give him more and more real NFL experience, that is the best way for him to learn. I also think Alex Smith taking some hard knocks last year has made him and his team better this year.

So yes I agree with Ric, it all depends on the player and situation. But if the Texans lose Carr and spend their #1 pick on a QB, it would be dissappointing if he did not earn his way to the starting spot before the season is done.

I agree, to a point. If we're going to spend high first round money on a QB next year, I'd like to see him earn his way into the lineup by the end of the year. I think if the Texans let someone's draft position determine their playing time though (ala Carr) then all the losing has been in vein and they've learned nothing.
