Hey, if we can get Battier to get arrested for mar1juana possession and to hit and shoot at his girlfriend, maybe we can trade E. Griff straight up for him. I am a little concerned about Battier though, because he's a Dukie, and we all know that Duke basketball players are pansies They all either underperform, gets injured way too often, or both. Just look at Ferry, Laettner, Hurley, Grant Hill, Langdon, Magette, Jay Williams, Dunleavy, etc. Brand may have been the exception, until he broke his foot, of course.
Nothing individually..but Battier is taller and younger and more of a team player... It doesn't matter anyways. Grizzlies will not give up Battier for Mobley. And I don't really want the Rockets to trade Mobley anyways. Mobley for Harpring? YES!
HeyDude, You are joking right.....Battier is a better shooter, better defender, better passer, is taller, and is a much better team player. Cat is a nice complimentary player who plays out of control far too often and thinks he is a star. Cat is a square peg in a round hole. DD
Everyone keeps saying how Battier is such a good team player....whatever.....he was an above avg. role player AT BEST on a freaking lottery team that won what, 25/30 games???
HeyDude, The difference is Battier KNOWS he is a role player, and Cat has no idea that he IS A ROLE PLAYER too. How about this one then? Battier is MUCH smarter than Cat.... DD
PPG Cat: 17.4 Battier: 12.0 RPG Cat: 3.9 Battier: 4.9 APG Cat: 2.6 Battier: 2.0 FG % Cat 43.3 Battier: 44.9 FT % Cat: .843 Battier: .744 So i guess Battier has the height, but thats about it....as far as Defense, I think Cat has improved significantly. I would like to see Battier hold Iverson for 8 ppg for 2 games for 40 minutes.... U know what Da, i wont lie to you though. I am a very big fan of Cat, but until now, Cat has shown little changes this year. I know that. But its only been 2 games. Give him at least 10-15, and if he still shows no signs, then make him the scapegoat eh? Even then, i would NEVER want to trade him for Battier though
No Battier, but Harpring would be awesome. On the other hand, what on earth would Jerry Sloan do with a knucklehead like Cat Mobely? I can just see the steam blowing out his ears! Actually, I like that picture A LOT .
Hmm... I think your stats comparison can use some adjustments. You used their career stats, which is not as good a reflection of the players that they are today as last season's stats. You will find that Battier's stats from last year, his second season, especially the shooting percentages (48% FG, 40% 3P, 83% FT) were much improved from his rookie season. [http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/statistics?statsId=3516] You will also find that Mobley's stats over the years have not improved significantly at all. [http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/statistics?statsId=3284]In fact, his minutes have increased a lot over the years with a corresponding increase in his scoring, but his other stats, including percentages, have been strikingly stagnant. Especially glaring are his assist totals, which has been between 2.5 and 2.8 per game for every season since his rookie season despite his increased minutes. Also we should take into account that Mobley has been in the league 3 full seasons more than Battier. Mobley is not expected to improve much from what he has done so far, whereas Battier may still have some upside in him. Battier had a good season last year, but for some reason, played less minutes than in his rookie year, when he had lousy stats. So his career stats are skewed towards his rookie year before his apparent improvement as a player. I think he's more of a small forward than a shooting guard, so maybe comparing him to Cat may not be ideal after all.
mmmm, Krystan, did u even look at Battier's Stats his second year? yeah, he shot better, sure. Did u also note that his scoring went down, from 14.5 his rookie year to only 9.5 his second year and his assists went down to only 1.3 and he only started 47 games for a lottery team, while his minutes went down from 39 to 30. Wow, talk about progress....hmmm, yippee, such a stud, Battier So yeah, trade a 17.5, 3.8, 2.8 guy for a 9.5, 4.4, 1.3 guy (LAST YEAR) just cause the later is such a good 'team player'...blah...whatever. if he did that on a playoff team in the west i would give him some props. but on Memphis.....come on....
Battier is fine, but when did he last have a play called for him? He is an opportunity scorer, a role player, a good guy. Cat is a legit starter. Advantage: CAT. You bet The Logo would go-go-go for SB for CM.
If you take last year's numbers, as Kryten128 suggests, you'll notice: Cat: 1,067 shots on goal Battier: 569 shots on goal Cat: 41.7mpg Battier: 30.6mpg Cat: 73 games played Battier: 78 games played Cat: 14.62 shots per game Battier: 7.29 shots per game Cat: 17.5ppg Battier: 9.7ppg If we increase Battier's shots per game to Mobley's level, multiply that by 2 points per shot (while not taking into consideration their 3PT & FT shooting percentages), then multiplying that total by their respective fg%, we get: Cat: 12.69 ppg Battier: 14.12 ppg Since Battier has a 3pt shooting percentage that is about 50 points higher than Cat's, it's blatantly obvious that Battier is the better shooter. His rebounding & blocked shots numbers are better than Cat's, while playing 11mpg less. Their steals per game are the same, even though Cat plays 11mpg more than Battier. Finally, there's one more telling stat that you omitted: Cat: 2.27 turn overs per game Battier: 0.87 turn overs per game
Hey Dude, I'm just trying to point out that your stats comparison can be more telling if you take things such as playing time, years in the league, percentage stats versus counting stats, etc. into account. No need to start an argument. I am a fan of neither Battier nor Mobley, but Mobley, given his relatively fair contract and starting role, may well be worth more than Battier in trade value. But I still think Battier's vast improvements in FG%, FT%, and TO, as well as maintaining his impressive steals and blocks numbers despite diminished minutes, show that he knows how to maximize his contributions given his role on the bench. Who knows how he will do if given a starting role. Mobley, on the other hand, has not shown much improvement other than in his scoring average despite being given more and more minutes over the years. In terms or being on a bad team, you can also look at it as being even more impressive, because he has crappier players surrounding him, and it'd be harder to put up good stats. I know you like Mobley, so you can take my comments however you want, as you are entitled to your own opinions.
Hottodie, Cat would have less TOs per game also if he came off the bench, while handling the ball less, and only playing 30 minutes. 2.27 per game while playing 40 minutes is actually not too bad... And I GURANTEE you, if you make Battier take twice as many shots, he will NOT shoot 48%. And can u honestly tell me, if u had to pick out of 2 players to shoot the 3 ball when Yao is double teamed, u would want Battier to shoot over Cat? What about in the 4th quarter, when Yao and Steve are fatigued or cant get it going? Is Battier gonna take his man off the dribble and put the ball in the hole? Krystan. Point taken. But i think Cat did change his game the second half of last year. But so far in the 2 games, he definitely hasnt played the way we would have liked. I dont deny that. And i am not against trading Cat, as much as i like him. But not for Battier, definitely NOT
HeyDude, How can you guarantee something that you can't control? I'm just posting the numbers based on what they have done, not on what I think they'll do in the future. However, if you want to look at similar number of shots on goal, then you'll have to take Battier's rookie season & compare it to Cat's last season numbers. Cat: 1,067 FGA Battier: 961 FGA Cat: .434 fg% Battier: .429 fg% Cat: .352 3pt% Battier: .373 3pt% Battier's FG% is 5 points less, but his 3pt% is 21 points better. All of this during his rookie season. His rebounds, blocks, & steals are better than Cat's last year & his turnovers are less than Cat's (1.99 compared to 2.27). Actually, the original intent of this thread was not to compare Mobley to Battier statistically, but to show that we could get an upgrade at our starting SF position & replace Mobley with a comparable SG. Yes there could possibly be a drop in the performance at the SG position, but the acquisition of Battier would more than off set the loss. Now, if you'd like to compare the stats of Wesley Person (the player I proposed getting to replace Mobley) to Mobley's, I'd be glad to accomodate you.
Hottoddie, if you use your logic (based on if they took equivalent shots) Battier > Mobley > Allen Iverson. Yet 99% of league brass would say AI > Mobley > Battier. You could sub Person for Battier and the patterns are the same. The only reason the Rockets would consider Battier for Mobley is Battier is younger and in a more needed position. To me that would be a bad trade unless the Rockets got some extra picks--there is a reason Battier has played fewer minutes than Mobley yet he has be on a worse team. It is because Mobley is a far more dynamic and effective player over heavy minutes. Memphis would pounce on that deal as they would get the better player who happens to also fit a team need (multi threat dynamic offensive player).
