    500 miles round trip.
    at a conservative 25mpg, that's 20 gallons x $3 a gallon = $60

    at 30mpg, that's 16.66 gallons x $3 a gallon = $50

you're telling me, the hassle of sitting there and charging the EV ...is for breakeven?

Well, the average price per gallon here in Oregon is $3.88, but yeah, on long trips using high speed chargers it can cost some, particularly when your wife is technologically challenged and only wants to go where you can plug and charge without working through apps and such. Where you save huge amounts is on daily stuff when you can recharge in your garage and on maintenance costs, which are substantially less.

The hotel Mrs. rimrocker is staying at has one free intermediate charger but in the middle of a winter storm she didn't want to bother with it so she fast charged. She may use the hotel charger later in the week, which would lower the costs substantially. Also, there are free or reduced chargers all over the place but most are intermediate speed and none are high speed. I think with more installs and more competition we'll see charging costs go down.

Ya when I had the e-tron I was saving a lot because I was driving 10,000 miles a year and paying 8c a kilowatt. Savings were higher since the car I replaced needed premium gas.

That was announced months ago. They actually showed some updates during CES this year. I'd buy something that actually looked good, but I really don't care for fake exhaust sounds. lol. Then again, I'm scared to death of anything Stellantis, so maybe this ain't it.

That's why I posted it -- I can't get over the goofy noise.

What do you think of the styling? Other than weak range, interior and exterior styling is about the only thing I hate about most EV's.

I think it looks good, but I suspect the base model that will eventually be sold to the public and rental fleets won't be quite as cool.

The only hope for electric car sound is letting them whine like a race car, but that noise gets old really fast.

I like the design staying true to a Charger. They've actually updated the sound a bit, I think. Tbh, I don't mind the sound - I kind of like it, but I just hate that it's basically fake. It's supposed to go over 120 dB, just in case you still want to be an annoying neighbor. Maybe they'll throw in fake exhaust fumes for trucks next so you can run around rolling coal in your electric truck.

    ?

Model 2 will be made in the newly announced Mexico factory, 30% cheaper than base Model 3. They didn’t show the design but confirmed the development. No one bought the rumor, we were down two days going into it, but I guess some still wanted to see the prototype and are disappointed. I’m guessing open low and rally back up. (Although market as a whole looks like crap right now)

Thanks for the info. Approximately much is it per watt before and after tax credits? On the plans that does net metering, how much does the plan pay for a kwh vs how much you pay them for a kwh?

7 years for it to pay back is better than I expected. I will have to investigate further. This is complicated. Adding a house battery adds to the cost quite a bit, but doing long term projections based on net-metering is troublesome too. The law and available plans could change any time.

In 2022, 14.4% of cars sold globally were EVs. That's about 1/7 of the market. In 2017, EVs accounted for 1/70 of the market.

Interesting study that finds many daily drivers don't need extended range rigs.

It wasn’t a product reveal which is why some are disappointed, it was an…. Investor day, as the name entailed. They basically summed up their future plans, which many of us knew already so it wasn’t really news. Biggest reveal, which was already leaked days before, is the announcement of the Mexico factory which will make their next gen vehicle at half the cost of the current base Model 3.

I am seeing A LOT more EVs on the road than 5 years ago. Mix of Tesla, Kia, and Fords. And now Rivian.

This is with the US market severely lagging (as can be seen by some of the sentiments in this thread), which will change after the IRA. EU and China hit close to 30% market share by the 4th quarter, which is a clear sign of tipping point, crossing the Rubicon etc. Given the clear trend, at some point it does not make financial sense to invest in ICE infrastructure in some of these markets, like good luck opening a gas station in the EU and getting your return on investment over the next 20 years. That would accelerate the transition.
