One thing I know about the guy is whatever he says in public is never the truth. You just have to wait and see what the real plan is....

Master manipulator. Don't believe what he says and don't bet against him; go find a different table to bet against. This election solidified that he will say anything to win.

As Charlie Munger said, 'show me the incentive, and I'll show you the outcome'

Now that Elon has direct political influence, you think he'll propose anything that would not benefit his businesses? It's obvious. My hope is that Elon finds some Win-Win solutions. But make no mistake, Elon will be a winner as that is what he is incentivized to do.

At this point, I'm not buying a Tesla on principal. I also want to wait until the other manufacturers have a little more history under their belts. So I'll wait and see.

Biden is nowhere to be found so Musk is already writing the rules.

    Probably Tesla..

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...-for-self-driving-cars?embedded-checkout=true
Past efforts to come up with federal legislation to regulate autonomous vehicles have stumbled.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration currently permits manufacturers to deploy 2,500 self-driving vehicles per year under a granted exemption, but legislative efforts to increase that number to as many as 100,000 have repeatedly failed.

A bill to do that sailed through the House several years ago during Trump’s first term, but the measure has been bogged down in the Senate. An attempt during the first year of the Biden administration to merge the bill with other legislation faltered when some manufacturers tried to include language that would prevent consumers from suing or forming class-action cases.

So do you like the proposal? I've got a lot of these self driving cars around my neighborhood in Austin. The Waymos seem to be way better than the self driving cars that were around a little over a year ago.

Waymos are a good product, however they are very expensive.

I haven't read into it. The question remains - Will Musk be fair and objective? Or will someone in the administration put their thumb (as always) on the scale against Google for political retribution. I am not concerned if a Alphabet product fails.

Very expensive? I am reading comparable to Uber/Lyft.

Or do you mean very expensive compared to a product that doesn't exist...ahem robotaxi..

Google and Waymo are winning the self driving race.

    1. People don't trust Tesla/Musk
    2. Expense is not relevant, Waymo will be burning through VC money for a while leading to cheap fares just enough until they get the costs down.
    3. Google is licensing their tech, so multiple car manufacturers (many that can make cars for less than Tesla) will be able to deploy self-driving cars.

What's good for Tesla is good for the country.

I interact with dozens of Waymos a day as a driver and pedestrian. They are surprisingly good, even at navigating odd or unusual circumstances. We used to find one stranded in some difficult to handle situation (like behind a garbage truck or other impediments), but the algorithms seem to navigate just about everything safely and smoothly now. As a pedestrian, I kind of like them, b/c they are much more polite and law abiding than human drivers, on average.

Some of my friends hate them, but I for one am ready for a driverless future, especially rid of human drivers.

It's pretty interesting. If you walk in SF (in the nice neighborhoods) in the early mornings or late at night, sometimes more than half the cars are driverless. A little vision of the future?

A little disturbingly (for me at least), the algorithms are constantly evolving. They used to be completely law abiding, but I guess they learn from their surroundings. Now they sometimes roll through stop signs a little bit, as most human drivers do, and now they speed a little in 25-mph zones too. Or it seems that way to me.

I sort of fear they will become just as assholish as humans, haha. (Or cry, whichever.)

    Yes, the product itself.

I can say FSD is making significant improvements. When I first tried it at the beginning of the year, I was a little underwhelmed by the claims. I wasn't using it during the free trial, much less willing to pay for it. The latest software update had significant highway driving improvement. That said, FSD still has quite a ways to go for a seamless experience.

Lol I noticed the same thing too with rolling through stop signs now.

My wife bought a Tesla 3 during COVID for the simple reason that all other cars she liked were either ridiculously overpriced used cars or have waiting period of forever. I've never been a fan of Musk but did enough research on the various benefits and issues of electric cars and 3 years later, I have to say I definitely don't regret the purchase. I can list a bunch of positives and negatives but in the end things mostly even out with each other. To me the only thing that really differentiate them is that electric cars are very techy. This is both good and bad. Good because it's cool to have lots of technology, and bad because it's all new tech and you're not sure how these cars will perform in 10-15 years.

I only two two caveats for anyone thinking about buying an electric car. One is that you should have a ICE car at the same time, mostly because sometimes we forget to charge and you can't just charge on the fly like you can fill up a gas tank. The other is to have your own garage, so you can charge at night in peace.
