Hertz is scaling back its EV ambitions because its Teslas keep getting damaged

The company inked agreements with Tesla and Polestar to buy nearly 200,000 EVs.

But like many other aspects of the EV switch, that plan is running into some headwinds. This week, Hertz said it was tapping the brakes on its EV rollout, citing the plummeting resale value of its EVs and the high cost of repair.

Tesla has been slashing prices to spark sales as it finds itself wrestling with softening demand and more competition. And repair costs are about double what the company spends on gas car fixes, Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr told Bloomberg.

BYD’s third-quarter profit soars to record after beating Tesla and others in EV deliveries, capping costs
    • BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) maker, reports an 82.2 per cent rise in third quarter profit

BYD, which dethroned Tesla as the world’s largest EV firm in 2022, sold 822,094 vehicles in the three months ended September, a 17.4 per cent rise from the previous quarter and a quarterly record.

the myriad of subsidies/taxes/deductions/regulations make it impossible to know if EVs would be viable in a free market

This article says the Equinox will only have one battery size across all trims. So it's likely all of the trims can get 300+ miles range.

So $35k trim might actually get the best mileage with FWD and smaller wheels. If Chevy can really make 300+ miles EV at $35k minus $7.5k tax incentives at a reasonably quantity (*cough cough $40k Lightning), then I'd be pleasantly impressed.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 21.5% of new vehicle registrations in the state of California for the first nine months of 2023, as per data released by the California New Car Dealers Association. This is nearly thrice the market share of 7.4% BEVs acquired in the time period across the U.S.

A total of 291,518 new BEVs were registered in California as of the end of September of which Tesla Inc
accounted for a whopping 183,278, thanks to the popularity of its Model Y. Tesla is seconded by General Motors Co‘s

Chevrolet sold merely 15,152 vehicles, a predominant majority of which was the Chevrolet Bolt.

California headquartered EV maker Rivian Automotive Inc however, saw the biggest jump in vehicle registrations in the time period by 176.8% to 6,740 units.

Yeah, Rivians are no longer the oddity that they once were. Seeing more and more in Oregon, particularly the Portland area. Still way too expensive for my tastes, but I do think the size is perfect for most urban/suburban folks.

Teslas had been dominating the market without the EV credits.

I'm happily driving around my Rivian R1-T (about 13K miles now). Definitely not without its drawbacks, but it is a great vehicle and the vast majority of my charging has been free. Even drove it from GA to Houston this summer.

What would you say are the drawbacks? And how does the range you're getting compare to claimed range.... and what is your driving like? i.e, %city vs. %highway
