Well since the average price of an EV is probably $50-60k, Cadillac had to keep their luxury brand mystique...

If you have a legitimate use for something, buy that something...

I don't get this "grr everyone says I should get an EV...but it doesn't fit my needs at all....so now what.."

Best way to vote is with your dollars.

That’s not what I’m saying. I don’t have any issue with EVs, I don’t think they actually help the environment, but I think they’re cool.
Trucks just aren’t where they need to be to be a viable option yet, imo.

I don't think they help the environment either. I think it's borrowing from Peter to pay Paul.

But hey getting consumers to spend money on things on the premise of "saving earth" is nothing new.
The plastics industry convinced us all we have to do is recycle and we can use all the plastics in the world.

If anyone wants to opine on my next car decision. I have a lease on a 2022 Nissan Leaf which is expiring in November. With the federal rebate and a Texas program and good lease terms, it was a great deal for 2 years. It's a third car so kids have transportation. The lease agreement says I can buy it from them at the end of the term for $24k. But, looking in the open market, it's worth ~$18-19k. So, I'm considering options. I have a preference for ending up with an EV, but don't absolutely have to. I can:

    1. Buy the Leaf for $24k. Not really, that's not going to happen.

    2. Negotiate with the dealer to sell me my Leaf for $18-19k, or else return it and buy someone else's Leaf for that amount.

    3. Buy some different EV for a like amount. Maybe something with CCS instead of Emo Chad (though honestly in almost 2 years, we have charged at a public charger exactly 1 time. Concern over high-speed charging is way overblown).

    4. Buy a 15-year old Toyota Avalon from my mother for $1, take a chance on the mechanic costs. (My kids would be disappointed to return to an ICE, but they really like this old car.)

    5. Buy a rough equivalent to the Leaf in an ICE and save a little money (a 2022 Nissan Versa is about $15-16k).

350k for a Cadillac CTS. Is it made of vibranium and Beskar? Gtfoh

Waiting for GM to say they lost millions of dollars because it didn't sell.

Good luck waiting for a major recall. Maybe if the stock crashes for other reasons.

It's still ugly out back, but it looks really nice to me otherwise.

Best way to crash the stock is for me to buy a few shares. That should send it to 0. I am on it fam. Will buy 100 shares.

Are EVs the ultimate solution? No, but they are demonstrably better than ICE rigs. After purchase, the carbon footprint is less even if you get electricity from the dirtiest coal-powered plant in the country. Using nationwide averages, the Department of Energy found that EVs create 3,932 lbs. of CO2 equivalent per year, compared to 5,772 lbs. for plug-in hybrids, 6,258 lbs. for typical hybrids, and 11,435 lbs. for gasoline vehicles. As we decarbonize the grid, those differences will become more stark. If you include the whole manufacturing process and life cycle of the vehicle, EVs have a carbon footprint that's about 3/5ths less than a comparable ICE rig, most of that difference coming in tailpipe emissions.

Yes, current battery technology requires mining and mining is always an ugly activity, especially when it affects vulnerable populations. But battery tech is improving and last I checked, ICE rigs depend on mining too--and increasingly they depend on chips that require precious metals. I don't recall a cobalt mine accident like Deepwater Horizon or the Exxon Valdez or oil train fires or groundwater poisoning or human-created earthquakes or Ixtoc 1 or even any of the huge number of smaller disasters that arise from acquiring and transporting fossil fuels.

While #4 is a dirtier option, it does use an existing car to its limits which means you're not part of the chain taking stuff out of the ground. Toyotas are usually solid for at least 150k miles if it's been taken care of. It's not a stretch to have them around for 250k. MPG efficiency and gas/co2 costs might make you second guess the decision, but at least you can see how the EV standards shake out after 2-5 more years.

My sis just leased an Ioniq 6 sedan and the dealer knocked off the 7500 rebate the dealer usually keeps as part of the leasing conditions. Ioniq 5 is more a family car and is also highly rated. There's kind of a glut in some EV makes/trims so do a little research and you might get a better deal.

That's part of my thinking. I settled on the lease 2 years ago because I thought EVs needed just a little more time to mature. Now I look at that segment -- and knowing I like to buy used -- and think I'd like to delay a purchase a couple more years. By the time the Avalon gives up the ghost, maybe the timing will be right.

Depending on the age of your kids, they can also learn to drive a car from the before times and regale younger generations of shocking and barbaric tales.

Is the thinking that once we all switch to batteries...oil drilling stops?

Lol. One of my kids just got her license this summer and I taught her to drive a stick shift! I've set her up for a lifetime of "In my day..." stories.

Wouldn't stop, but of course drilling would reduce proportionally with demand. Which is a benefit.

And apparently Toyota is going to make a solid-state battery EV in a few years. I think they will require less in rare earth materials in addition to all their other benefits.

    no

But it significantly reduces emissions and helps slow the continued growth of U.S. dependence on oil. Even if we all switched to EV's, our oil needs are still incredibly high and are not going away anytime soon. We're already producing oil at an all-time high and it's still not enough for U.S. daily use. Anything we can do to slow the dependence growth will help us economically & strategically. It will leave us in a better position for our future.

The charging network is the big hangup for EVs.

Also, I have had the same f-150 for 17 years. I've towed something TWICE in those 17 years. Towing for trucks/suvs for most buyers is a non-issue.
The range issue for EVs will be solved in the upcoming years. I'm sure a 1000-mile range on a battery is probably within 10 years. Also, batteries efficiency and the materials used in them will change as technology gets better.

I don't believe a word Toyota says until they have a real product to buy.
They've been saying all sorts of outlandish claims for years.

Quantamscape is supposedly close also and they are backed by VW....

Solid state batteries so far are...all hype and nothing to show for it.
