GM confirms Cadillac Celestiq starts at a whopping $340K

GM has now confirmed the official starting price of the Cadillac Celestiq: $340,000 before any option.

When GM first announced the Celestiq, we anticipated that it would be expensive, considering that GM said it would be hand-building it, but we didn’t know that it would be actually aiming for the Rolls Royce market.

The automaker had previously only mentioned that Cadillac’s next electric car would start “north of $300,000.”

Now GM has confirmed that the Cadillac Celestiq will start at $340,000. That’s before options, and there will be plenty of those as the vehicle is fully customizable.

In terms of the powertrain specs, not much has been made official just yet about the Celestiq.

The company has signaled that the electric vehicle will have about 300 miles of range, 600 horsepower, and a 0 to 60 mph acceleration in 3.8 seconds.

For it being their halo car, I don't think it's absurd, especially when you see the interior and how they let you customize the thing every which way. This was never meant for "the common man". It's a beautiful car until you get to the back where they went shooting brake-meets-boattail or something. Can't stand that.

Looks are of course subjective, but I think Caddy concepts like the Sixteen, El Miraj, the Ciel, and Escala were all much, much better looking. (I understand that the styling trickled down in most of those cases to production cars and that making a concept roadworthy and suitable for the masses aren't exactly small tasks, so I can forgive GM for not putting any of them into production.) While this appears to have the "presence" of a concept, it's styling is pretty lame and derivative for the most part, IMHO.

Maybe the colors aren't my thing, I dunno. But I don't think there's anything special about the range, power, or performance either. And I think that when all is said and done this is going to do for Cadillac's image about what the ELR did, which is not much.

Maybe I'm wrong, I just think it's way too much money for not enough car.

I know GM will be disappointed to here this, but I'm going to have to pass. :D

Caddy has been trying to recapture their old glory when they were on the same level in terms of prestige as BMW, Mercedes, etc. are now. Of course, that probably goes back 100 years. lol. For me, it's that back end that kills it.

I kind of wish they had just made an ultra high-tech luxo-barge instead of a ultra high-tech luxo-barge crossed with a wagon. I do want to see who goes nuts with the options on this thing. There's that 50+" OLED screen for the dash, 4-zone climate control, the first smart glass panoramic roof, multiple screens for passengers to use, but then there's crazy options like leather-wrapped floors, from what I've read. LOL. The car is going to be limited in production since it's also being hand-built to order.

Just like most other halo cars, the tech in this one may trickle down into their "normal" vehicles and just like a Rolls Royce/Bentley, the specs may not justify the price, but then once you start getting up to $300k+ what car justifies it? I've read they're targeting Rolls Royce with this sucker. That being said, I'll probably just wait, too. I've been eyeing that Rimac Nevera. Maybe we can get a 2-fer deal - I'll go look for a coupon.

Ford is opening up their F150 Lightning Pro order back to everyone for about a week or until they run out.

    https://fordauthority.com/2023/08/2023-ford-f-150-lightning-pro-order-banks-reopen-today/

This is the $50k entry level trim meant for commercial and fleet, but is now open to anyone. It qualifies for $7500 tax rebate.

Even though it's not $40k like it was, that's still a decent price if the truck matches your usage. Long distance towing will be very limited, but should be great for around town use.

Welp, I finally found out what it will take to make me seriously consider an EV. Plenty of room for me and the Mexican industrialists I regularly dine with.

If a truck can’t tow, it’s not a truck. The tests under a load I’ve seen have been really poor

Electrics trucks are definitely not suitable for people who tow regularly or drive long distances, but the vast majority of truck owners don't use trucks as trucks. 75% of truck owners tow once or less times a year according to a study in 2019. An electric truck would be better for those people most of the time with cheaper fuel cost, less maintenance, and more comfort level.

Towing with an electric truck will never be good. You can't beat aerodynamics. Range will always be poor. I can see the market eventually dividing into EV trucks for those who never tow or tow extremely rarely and plain hybrids (or PHEV) for those those who do.

Over the last 40 years, light truck sales has increased by 400%. IMO the increase of people who NEED a truck couldn't have increased by 400%. The increase is driven by people who WANT a truck, which is a market that EV trucks would do well in.

I'd like to agree with you, but let's face it - most people that own trucks probably don't tow anything on any regular basis. They may haul stuff, but tow a boat, trailer, etc.? Probably not.

Even still, any kind of payload kills their range.
I personally tow quite a bit, so it wouldn’t work for me. And fundamentally I think a truck should be used as a truck

Yeah, but the mileage drop with a payload is nothing like when you tow something from what I understand. Mainly I'm guessing is that, again, most people who haul stuff aren't hauling 1000 lbs of stuff. Sure some do, but most of these people are driving the truck "just in case they need to do heavy work". They may have a payload of over 1000 lbs every once in a while, if even that, and for that trip their mileage may drop 25%. I always wondered how they'd work out as a work truck, though, since those guys drive the crap out of the trucks and put all kinds of loads on them whether it be hauling or towing.

People that need real trucks will keep buying gasoline or diesel trucks.

Suburban bros who want to get a truck to tailgate at NRG will be just fine with an EV.
The testicles these idiots attach to their trucks are not true payload anyway.

I’m in the burbs, pretty much most of the people here tow weekly. Whether it’s campers, boats, atv.
