JVG should only be replaced if the team is swept first round, even if one of our 2 stars gets hurt.

It will be an interesting summer watching who the team drafts, or what they trade the draft pick and players for.

I figure he gets an extension no matter what
Though I think it should be second round or bust

    2nd round game 6.

Love the man. Love his body. But I love the Rockets more. Gotta produce or else.

And I include injuries. Sorry. Life sucks. He is a New Yorker. He can handle it if it happens.

He is going to win the Coach of the Year most likely, but that will be based on how he was able to lead the team into overcoming the loss of Yao.

With a fully healthy squad heading into the playoffs and a favorable opponent in Utah, it's results or else. I don't think he will be renewed if we fail to make it into the 2nd round and extend that series to 6.

I would think that it will be up to JVG if he wants a new contract, and someone in managment said that earlier this year IIRC.
EDIT: I wish this poll was public so I could see who voted he is out no matter what.

if we get out of the first round i think he'll get an extension... if we sputter and lose it (the curse of t-mac?) he may still get one.

    I concur.

Don Cheney won coach of the year before Les fired him.

I think he's done enough for the extension. He has many adavantage. Both players and managers like him. and He invite the red R so the fans should like his passion. and there no better coach available too.

Agreed. However, I feel that he'll be snubbed for COY. With everyone creaming over "the job that Avery has done with the Mavs" and guys like Sam Mitchell getting young teams to overacheive. Hell, the media might even see Jerry Sloan as a better candidate this yr. To be safe tho, I think JVG has to get this team into the second round. The only problem with him in my opinion, is his creativty in getting the ball to Yao. As far as him being stubborn, he seems to be opening up the rotation on a night to night basis. He is a very good coach and I think it would be a mistake to not extend him.

I do not think Avery Johnson will win it, even though he probably deserves it. No one has ever won coach of the year two years in a row.

It is basically a race between Sloan and Van Gundy. Neither team made it to the playoffs last year and now they are playing good basketball. Sloan is the favorite, he has never one it and everyone likes him. But JVG has a chance if the Jazz continue to lose.

Come on, Les is a reasonable owner. The progress he made has not yet been as evident as what Isiah Thomas did in New York.

Umm... you seem to be confused or something. In your OWN signature, you quoted yourself declaring
yet in this post your are claiming the Rockets will beat Utah in the first round. Furthermore your signature is also the first case of someone misquoting or misrepresenting their own statement I've seen LOL. Not only did you guarantee the rockets losing in the first round in it, but you also added another statement saying "JVG + Alston = 2nd round knockout" when you had actually already guaranteed they be knockout out in the FIRST round.
    Schizo much?

No way JVG deserves coach of the year. I applaud him for doing a nice job without Yao, but he is not a top tier coach yet, imo, Avery should get it, then Sloan

I think JVG is a great coach of a by-gone era. An era where thug-basketball was in vogue (if such a thing can be said).

It worked with the Knicks. Hand-checking, bruising defense that turned the game into a contest of wills and hard work.

A bygone era. It's time for JVG to retire. I think he's gone, after 4 years with nothing but 1st round disappointments - he won't see a 5th. We need a modern coach to help this team adjust to the redefined game.

Name your top coaches in the NBA. Where does JVG rank?

I at least rank him behind:

    Avery Johnson
    Phil Jackson
    Greg Popovich
    Pat Riley
    Jerry Sloan

    those are the elite imo

    other good ones imo

    Mike D'Antoni
    Flip Saunders
    Rick Carlisle
    Don Nelson
    George Karl

I think JVG is in the middle of the pack, a very good defensive coach, a very poor offensive coach (average). My top candidates for coach of the year are Avery, Sloan, and I will even throw Isiah into th mix because he has done wonders with the knicks
