Maybe. But, I think a lot of Morey's strategy is finding guys who are undervalued relative to their contract. 82games used to have what they call "fair salary", and look at Battier that year. http://www.82games.com/0506/fairsalary0506.htm 43rd in the entire league, ahead of guys like Bibby and Rashard Lewis and even Luol Deng. Ahead of TMac, too, but part of that is the games played factor. Our other acquisition last year, Kirk Snyder, was 4th on the Hornets in fair salary behind Chris Paul, Speedy Claxton, and David West -- but ahead of guys like Desmond Mason, JR Smith, Rasual Butler, and PJ Brown. Some people wondered why we went for Snyder instead of JR Smith, and that may be behind the answer. On the bright side, we just plain need talent, imo. I'll take it at whatever position we can get it (besides center, really). Morey may have some black box formula of factors to decide how to target players. I think the biggest change is a new focus on attacking guards, and big men who can make decisions with the ball (Brad Miller-esque). On another bright side, it may not be as new as we might think. CD and Rudy saw something in Brad Miller before he blew up in Sacramento, so hopefully they'll (or at least CD) know it when they see it again.
Bad CD "seeing" pun. If CD and Lindsey are still around, I imagine a lot of the scout guys from the Rudy era are too? We targeted Brad Miller way back when he was just a moderately productive reserve with Charlotte. I hope whoever picked up on the skills Miller had back then is still around and can spot the same type of skills (big men with uncovered passing ability) elsewhere.
Leslie, Lindsey, Tracy, Carroll. This organization is infested with men with girly names. I'll bet Doug Christie is next.
good point but in his 7 most recent drafts he picked 4 of those notable players. 4/7 is pretty good. garcia is still a solid contributor who can develop after a few years like martin, turkey, and peja. i'd say that was a solid pick too making it 5/7. then in one of those years he didn't have a first round pick. hard to pick a notable player from the second round. i'm only worried about first round selections. he's 5/6 in his last 6 first round selections. now, is he getting better at drafting or is it the team's scout which makes the difference? seems like he couldn't go wrong in sacto, but everywhere else he couldn't go right. my guess is that the scout has more to do with it that the coach.
WTF! The thread started meant the type of player, not the ethnicity TTRocket.... Athletic, Shooter, Passer, Scorer, Rebounder....that is the type my friend!!!!
In a good organization, the coach will identify what he needs. He will also work out players and note their strengths and weaknesses, and how quickly they can learn things or do certain things. Then if you have a great GM, they will take that info and make the best decisions for the club. That includes putting a good product out, building for the long-term, and winning. It also includes positioning for future deals and etc - which a coach may not be considering. So yeah, a coach should have input - but they shouldn't be responsible for who gets drafted. That's why a GM is the most influential person in terms of deciding how successful a club will be - since at the end of the day, they pick the coach too. Looking back at the Rockets history - Carrol Dawson might have just gotten lucky with Sam Cassell and Robert Horry, and trading for OT and landing Mario Elie - even Maxwell fell into our lap for $50K. I don't think CD did a steller job with this team the last 10 years. Or even a good one. Probably the best decision was acquiring T-mac but that hasn't yielded any results. Anyway, let's hope Morey has a bit of J West in him. And no - Adelman won't be making the decisions - although with Morey's inexperience, that may not be the case, and it may not be a bad thing.
Interesting remark, Dakota. As many have pointed out (and I agree it is obvious) a GM is very involved in trades. I still think the coach, especially an experienced one has substantial input. I will look to the players noted in the drafts which were helpfully provided above to see if there is a versatility thread. Also defensive vs offensive primary players.
Watch, somehow we'll get Yi, that would be sextactular (sexy and spectacular, I made it up, go ahead and use it).
Gerald Wallace and Kevin Martin, I like it. With those two picks alone, he already drafts better than the combo of Rudy T/CD.
Actually, Joe Smith, Dan Dickau, Jerome James and Andrew DeClerq were all good picks - especially considering where Dickau, James and DeClerq were taken. Hell, three out of four of those guys are still in the NBA.
