I never really ventured out in Fredericksburg...IMHO, it was a place to re-connect with your significant other...I remember one time we just drove around and went to Luckenbach, Texas, went to some sports bar to see a game and some rest. that's fairly popular...
Others have mentioned Wineries...my wife and I both like Becker Vineyards the best out of all the wineries that we visited out there. Both the quality of the wine and the vineyard/winery itself were very, very nice.
No offense but I think Becker sucks. We hated their wine. We kept commenting that the only way you should drink their wine was if it was in a paper bag. It may be a drive but if you get the chance, head out to Mandola Winery. It is attached to a restaurant called Trattoria Lisina that is really good. If there is a wait, you can tour the winery and shop and/or knock out a bottle of vino under the trees out front. We bought a case of their Montepulciano and Syrah the last time we were there. We plan on buying another when we go back over Easter. This place is owned by the Mandola Family that owns the Carraba's chain. The food here kicks Carraba ass and you can buy a bottle at the table for about $10.
Wow thanks for all the great suggestions. Seems like there is soo much to do. Not sure if one day will be enough.
Ok this is going to get me going. I would start at Fredricksberg and head east towards Austin, and hit Grape Creek Vinyard, then Torie De Pietre, then I would go to Becker, then you have to go to WoodRose.....then head over to Driftwood vinyards and watch the sunset from a cliff...it is spectacular...then hit Mandolas for an evening meal......and more wine. For the record on my wife's 40th birthday in February, I got a stretch limo and did the tour with 4 other couples, we got smashed and enjoyed tons of wine..... Link to wineries map around Fredricksberg That is a good day...IMO. DD
I take it you've never been to Iron Works -- a restaurant that has been anointed *the* #1 barbecue in Texas, well patronized by many celebrities and US presidents. Jay Leno has them ship barbecue to him in LA regularly. Call.
If you do happen to wander through these towns, be sure to stop by Lost Maples park. You won't regret it.
Been there several times. Annointed by whom? Pretty much every list/ranking thing has the same 8 or so places, and Iron Works just isn't in the class of Southside/Kreuz/Black's/Cooper's/Louie Mueller's/etc....And celebrities? Jay Leno? You're kidding, right? I'm to assume you're a Scientologist too? Poppa Bush loves Otto's in Houston, that doesn't mean it's anything more than a 2nd tier joint, like Goode Co, Iron Works, etc....
The only reason Mandola's wines are decent is because they import their grapes from California. Texas wine sucks. Coopers is good, but not great. Probably worth going to if you already in Fredericksburg though. Just like Iron works is good, but not great. Kreuz Market is great BBQ. Louie Mueller's is also great bbq. I'm totally spoiled by having friends that BBQ better than most of the supposedly great BBQ restaurants. I'm not sure why Fredericksburg has become such a popular tourist destination. Just go to Lockhart and eat bbq all day.
If you go to Llano, just before you reach town (about 10 mi. towards Fredericksburg) on the right is Apple Valley Orchards. My cousin has an organic apple orchard with fresh organic cider, ice cream and pies. Stop in and tell him rhester a big Houston Rocket fan who is his cousin said everything is on the house (or tell him to put it on my tab ) Anyways, his name is John and he can hook you up with some sweet organic apples and his own bee hive fresh honey. And there is lots to do in Fredericksburg and the area.
You may be thinking of the honey store up the highway a couple miles, but my cousins store is going to open soon. He also has fresh honey, but mostly organic apple stuff.
