LOL. I knew what I was getting into, but it needed to be said. This is about the 10th thread about this silly soup. Look, it is OK. Not bad, but certainly not incredible. Now if you want to try something Vietnamese that is incredible, try the vietnamese egg rolls at Hollywood Vietnamese on Montrose. They take an all pork egg roll (fried in something totally unique) and you wrap it in lettuce, cilantro, hot sauce, and some sweet sauce. Now THAT is something worth going out of your way for.
I'm with Fatty here - I'm not a pho guy at all. I sure do miss eating ramen in Japan though. The real stuff is a world away from the instant package kind.
Ramen off the street in Japan is beyond amazing. I have to rank it above Pho, but I'm sure if I had Pho in Vietnam, my opinion might be different.
Most Pho places in Houston are bad to mediocre. I usually go to one Pho place with the family every other week, and they do have some good Pho. The Pho in Vietnam is absolutely delicious (visited 4 years ago) as is the Pho in California! Yum.
Haha, okay, so let's take our culinary advice about Asian food from a white guy. Oh look, egg rolls, so Asian!! That's authentic Vietnamese food! P.S. If you want authentic Chinese food, I know a great place. It's called Panda Express.
I'm going to come in Fatty's defense here and tell you that this is NOT a thread about authentic Asian food. I'm Asian, and I happen to love those eggrolls. They may not be authentic Asian, but they don't have to be in order for them to be good. I still love my pho though.
You wanna help their business and share with us where's this one place you and your family always go to?
The really humorous part of this post is that it comes from a bbs member rather well known for his penchant to start threads debating the latest fast food entrees. Was that popeye's bowl you had last night "overrated" fatty?
Probably they have to water down a whole bunch of thing to accomodate alot of people and most of the stuff aren't fresh and are refrigerated. In Vietnam you get the real and fresh stuff.
My wife made some homemade Pho not long ago that was incredible. I completely understand why people freak out over this dish. The thin, sliced beef over the broth and cucumbers. Very nice. I miss all of the Vietnamese restaurants in Houston, but I did not discover Pho until a few years ago. While we are on Asian food, I have become a flat out freak about Malaysian food. Nasi Lemak, a breakfast food with rice, coconut milk, hardboiled eggs, peanuts and chilies, is incredible. Hokkien Mee is a thick noodle dish that I have had with vegetables pork, or chicken, or seafood. It is divine. The fried rice dish, Nasi Goreng is awesome, too. I love how spicy the cuisine is. Could some Asian food experts recommend anything else?
Burmese food is unbelievable. I have no idea where to find any in Texas, which is a shame. Any good Malay spots in Houston/Austin? Nice call, rhad. Fatty's head will explode when Jack in the Box starts selling pho bowls sometime next winter.
QFT. I love Pho, but it barely cracks my top ten in soups. Tom Kha Gai at Kanamwon here in Houston is my favorite soup in the world. No coconut milk in this one, but there's a roast duck soup at Lin's BBQ in the sugarland area that beats any Pho I've ever had.
