Does this have the coagulated blood in it? There's a beef soup I've always wanted to try, but I thought it had blood in it which scared me away.
Yeah, I specifically left that part out for a reason. It's coagulated pig blood to be exact. Like another poster said, you can just asked to not have it in the bowl or you can remove it yourself. There's usually like three or so in a serving. The thought of eating it repulsed me back when I was a little kid, but I've developed a taste for it now.
I knew I left something out. I do throw a star anise in when the broth is going. You do want to take the star anise out before adding noodles. I usually use chicken stock.
Sam Gye Tang is the bomb. Don't forget the sliced Dae Chu (Jujube) and Ginseng in there. Not to mention the roasted chestnuts thrown in there at the more sophisticated Sam Gye Tang-specialty places. That might be where the "healing powers" come from. It's an overall very healthy and hearty meal.. Damn make me want one now. That said, I love Pho after a hard night out drinking. To me its the ultimate hangover remedy. When my stomach needs something warm, soupy and flavorful, I get pho because its easy to keep down when your digestive system is out of wack.
Thanks to this thread, I've had pho on my mind all day. I started a batch right before the game tonight, dropped the noodles in at the end of the third quarter, and ate during the fourth.
