Lock this thread?? It's freaking awesome. Somehow we've all been dupped into reading two pages of the worst possible plan that could put into effect by a guy who didn't even know how many games are in the regular season.

So let me get this straight. Every team plays each other 3 times and then the 16 best records make the playoffs and are seeded accordingly?. If thats it, it sounds ok, but how do we determine who gets that rubber 3rd game at home? In 2004-05 the nba will have 32 teams i believe. So if everyone plays each other 3 times that 93 games which is longer than it was before. I do like the best records thing though.

Why not contribute to the thread instead of criticizing. So what I didn't know the exact number of games, I was preoccupied with my 3x28=84 idea. sue me. Since most of you think my idea is the "worst idea imaginable" why not defend why you think the current system works. Someone still needs to explain how Dallas getting the #3 seed is fair under the current system. I'm all ears.

The current system works because the best team still wins the championship.

Every major sport has conferences or leagues. Hockey and Basket ball do it East and West, while Football and baseball do it American and National. It seems to have worked out pretty well for the past 100 or so years, so I don't see it changing anytime soon.

re: 3 game series homecourt advantage

Some Eastern series are three games (since they have 1 more team), so whatever is used to decide home court there could be used under a new plan.

    re: Dallas being #3

    1) I don't think Dallas cared all that much.
    2) No one would really care if the rule was changed (except the first division winner to be seeded third) as it is a side effect of a now nonexistant imbalanced schedule.
    3) If the 6th seed can beat the now third seeded team, then they could probably beat the team that was worse but got the second seed. As such, they would have had to play them anyway in the next round, so everything works out in the end.
