I don't know. They definitely appear to be dying.

Occasionally one comes through my neighborhood in Cedar Park (north of Austin) but I bet my kids don't even know what an "ice cream truck" is.

(for the record, the one that comes around up here plays "Music Box Dancer")

Down in South Austin, I see some Mexican guy on a bike selling ice cream, but yea in my time in Houston/Austin, the only times I've seen the ice cream man was when I was like 8 years and younger, then he just stopped coming.

I remember that one. My friends and I used to repeat the "hello." But the one I hear most often is "Pop Goes The Weasel."

My guess would be not much profit with the rise in expenses. Truck, maitenance, fuel, insurance, and employee wages. Everything costs more now. One would have to sell lots of Flintstone pushups to make a profit.

That also explains why many are on bike carts.

You can't molest children on a bike cart though.

I remember ours playing the entertainer...I never knew it's name, I always called it that song from 'The Sting'.

1 through 4 and 6. And on Greensleeves they play the fifth note regular instead of flat, used to drive me nuts for some reason. I assume one company just markets a bunch of those .midis (?) to ice cream truckers.

Maybe less kids at home due to extracurrics, or less kids at home alone (so they can't buy junk food) due to John Walsh, or kids at home just not going outside at all.

Kids don't go outside anymore. When I grew up in the 70's there were constantly ice cream trucks in the neighborhood. There were also always kids playing outside.

This is the tune I remember.

I guess its Turkey in the Straw, but I would have never realized it from the original clip posted in this thread.

Growing up we always had The Entertainer, now they play either the one with "HELLO!?" the end or Christmas music (it's been playing a mixture of Silent Night and some other carols for the past 2 years).

The Entertainer and Turkey in the Straw, in Lakewood Forest, 1983 - 1992. Oh, how I miss those days.

Greensleeves has been traditionally played in either Dorian mode (with the raised 6th scale degree) or Aeolian mode (with the natural 6th scale degree). So while the Aeolian may be more "comfortable" for you, either is technically correct. /music geek

Random question but is there a reason that ice cream trucks dont exist around the Galleria fountain anymore? I remember going there as a kid to get ice cream and then to hang around the park in front of the Transco tower.

I actually saw an ice cream truck parked outside at the Toyota Center Bell St entrance after the Grizzles game. Although it may just have been Scola's ride .

The ninja turtles with the gumball eyes were the best.
