I was listening to the YouTube of Stay With Me mixed with Won't Back Down when it switched to Tom Petty's greatest hits....

Damn. I'm not the biggest Classic Rock fan, I love the Alternative and Indy scene, but man I forgot how many jams he has.

I'm in my mid 20s, and while I've always known who Tom Petty was, I had never really grasped how many songs of his I appreciated until I listened to them all during one sitting...

Compared to other bands of the 70s/80s I think he has one of the best catalogues, yet I don't ever really feel like he's considered one of the greats.

I guess his music could be considered "simple" but man he was great at writing catching tunes.

    yes, very, very catching tunes

...and, yet, they have a subtle undertone to them

I do see the monotony in his music. Perhaps that's why I didn't realize he had so many jams because I was confusing 3/4 songs for each other.

Maybe it's his fault nickelback exists.

But I still think he's underrated.

Not underrated, but catchy and prolific like the crazed devil's children. He seems like a non-corporate version of Aerosmith that just makes good hooks but contrastingly doesn't run them into the ground.

That fat gay Brit has to pay him some $$$ for ripping off one of his songs. Can't remember which one.

My aunt had their greatest hits cd around 96, and she would play it every time she was in the car. I know every song word for word and I'm proud of it!!

The title of this thread should have been:

"[what][music] is David Allan Coe underrated?"

We already know you HATE country music. With a passion. I throw Rhonda Vincent at you, or the Osbourne Brothers.

You probably like Jerry Douglas, though.

Love Tom Petty, him and the Heartbreakers are my number 2 favorite of all-time (Pink Floyd is my Hakeem Olajuwon, there simply isn't a discussion to be had)

Their music certainly isn't very diverse, but I personally think diversity can be overrated if you do a certain thing as well as he does. American Girl in particular is very high on my list.

Love Tom Petty. Breakdown would be my favorite song. Love the guitar riff at the beginning.

He played a Super Bowl so you wouldn't call him underrated.

Damn the Torpedoes is a top all timer. Hypnotic Eye is pretty damn good. Don't miss the Mudcrutch album in surveying his best stuff.

Listen to his XM station " Buried Treasures' if you want an education in the history of rock music, I think it #40.

Basically, the man is a national treasure.

I would say my favorite TP song is "I need to know".
