Why do people think the Rudy Gay deal was a bad one? We got out of Kwame's horrendous contract. And Rudy Gay wouldn't have won a championship with us. Do you really want to pay Gay a near max contract? He's not that big of an impact player. pls go
Was that directed at me? Did you even read my post or do you not understand what the meaning of monday morning QB is?
Is Rudy Gay paid Max money with us if he is the third option nearly his whole time here? The answer is probably not. Not a good argument either about his money.
What about Amare? We have posts blaming Morey for not trading Yao and Tracy when they had a good season and could've gotten value because the writing's on the wall. Now we are blaming Morey for not pulling the trigger and another injury plagued player because he wouldn't agree to extension AND checkup. You can't have it both ways.
Well when your decisions come down to Rudy Gay and Amar Stoudemire in your tenure. Both add up to huge misses no matter the circumstances. Those are two pretty huge misses. Almost but never happened even though we had the chance and even had the Amare trade if we wanted and drafted Rudy Gay for Memphis no less. Thats pretty huge. No matter the circumstances.
In fact Rudy Gay was wearing a Rockets hat for a few minutes. Amare Stoudemire was out of Phoenix for sure because it was last second and they had no other trade partners to get anything back for him. Thats how close it was. They were practically our players for a few seconds.
 That picture kick me in the nads everytime I see it. Time to go drink some bleach and take a nap.
Joe Johnson got paid near max money after being the FOURTH option in Phoenix. That's the most similar comparison to a hypothetical Rudy as a Rocket. So, I'd say that it's a solid argument. Also, Rudy wasn't our selection. For the millionth time, the Rockets were never going to draft Gay. If the Battier deal (which involved a big salary dump of Swift's contract) fell through, the pick was going to be Sefalosha. If you're going to play the "Morey should not have picked X over Y in the draft", then so be it. But every fan base can say that about their GM. Good thing Morey's draft record has been pretty solid overall. People really need to give up on the whole Rudy Gay argument. It's weak and lacking in any real basis that he was otherwise in the Rockets' plans. He was never really their pick.
Big picture says he was really our pick., We just traded it away. Anyhow. How is it weak when choosing Thabo Sefalosha is even weaker an argument or copout to make for the orgnization if true? On money? He would be scoring less and with Artest still here, Scola, Brooks, Landry? Most likely he makes around what Kevin Martin makes for a quality organization that doesnt have to overpay to keep him like the Grizzlies.. Just leave this here for some consideration. It is hindsight now but not a bad argument is was a bad decision the Rockets made. Useless? Maybe. Argument sake? Nope.
It was so dumb on the Rockets part not take gay, we were demolished in game 7 against the mavs the prior year due to the lack of speed and athleticism around yao and mcgrady and we were missing that 3rd scorer, yet they traded for a slow offensive challenged player in battier who was already similar to jim jackson and david wesly, they brought in the exact opposite of what we needed at the time. Even though he may not have made an immediate impact he would have filled a need and could very well took on that role we were missing, waiting for him to develop shouldn't have been an issue because battier alone was no going to elevate us to championship contender without that 3rd all-star caliber player and because it was already known that T-mac had chronic back issues so he would have also been a good replacement for the future.
Hindsight's 20/20, as you admit. And this (non) selection definitely qualifies. The Battier deal made sense at the time. I had only wished at the time that the Rockets could have gotten the Griz's #24 pick, actually to take Lowry. But no could do with the Swift salary dump. I actually really liked Gay as the pick, but the move did put the Rockets in a better chance to contend for a title with a HEALTHY Tracy and Yao from 2006 to, say, 2009 than Gay would have. Too bad those two stars couldn't stay healthy for a title run. I will say, however, that all the players you list above were brought in AFTER the 2006 draft. If the Rockets somehow select and keep Gay, it is highly unlikely that Artest is ever traded for, that Landry is ever drafted (since the Rockets would have been stuck with Swift at PF), or perhaps that Scola is even traded for. My point about the "Gay argument" is that it is really more about the Rockets not wanting to pick him at #8. No different than saying the Rockets took Hakeem over Jordan. Rodney McCray over Clyde Drexler. Yao over Amare. Bostjan Nachbar over Tayshawn Prince. Luther Head over David Lee. It was an apparent draft miss (although I'm satisfied with the Hakeem pick). Happens all the time to every team. The only reason people harp so much about this one is that the Rockets actually made the pick of Gay for another team. Pure coincidence that makes this particular draft miss so conspicuous. If the pick was Patrick O'Bryant (taken with the next pick) instead, with Gay going to Toronto at #9, I doubt we hear nearly as much complaining from fans on this BBS about "the Gay debacle."
I remember that that draft was preInternet but I do not remember a hue and cry over passing over MJ - - and only a wee question about Bowie over MJ. Yes, hindsight is 20 - 20. How many were picked that day before Stockton? Let's face it, the Draft has become a much better place for the Rox since DM the GM has been in charge of it.
Battier was brought in as he will be able to defend Dirk as well as able to shoot that 3p. Back to topic. Injury or not. That Amare deal have to be attempt. Its not like Rox is cleaning house for Amare. Its Battier, Scola and Cook. Yes scola is producing close to all-star stats. But Amare whenever healthy is the All-star.
I know but we didn't need another spot up shooter, that was the biggest problem no one outside of t-mac and yao could create while mavs had dirk, finley, stackhouse, terry, howard, and harris could all create for themselves it was like 6 vs 2... yao and t-mac were only to avg double figures and battier was not going bring in the ability to create nor was he going to stop dirk.
