I said earlier...maybe in another thread...that I can't put lack of foresight with Yao on Morey...because I don't think Les would have allowed him to trade him anyway.
1. be thankful that you are not a Knicks fan then. Just letting you know that it takes most franchises years to rebuild their program. The Yao/McGrady era really hasn't even officially ended yet. 2. Time - ok go back to #1. In a salary cap era you cant just flip your injured stars for other stars overnight. The Yankees are the one exception here. Even The Lakers and Celtics have gone through several periods of rebuilding.Winning 40 games and rebuilding at the same time is amazing and rarely ever happens in sports. 3. Les Alexander excepting a losing franchise? Apparently you don't pay attention to any other sports franchise in Houston. I'm not even going to argue that one. Just google Bud Adams, Drayton McClain, etc. And find out for yourself how Les compares to these guys. 3. If you think Les Alexander excepts losing then I don't know how you can stand watching any other major sports teams in Houston. I'm not even going to rebuddle
If you are using +/- status for your argument, then Artest is an efficient player and Kevin Martin is not. A poor defensive player like Brooks or Martin would always be rated poorly, even if they drop 20 pts in the basket. A player like Maxwell/Artest(+5.9 for 2009/10) would always have a higher +/- rating than Kenny Smith/Aaron Brooks(-0.2 for 2009/2010). http://www.82games.com/0910/0910HOU.HTM http://www.82games.com/0910/0910LAL.HTM The offense may be bad for Maxwell/Artest, but it is not nearly as bad as Brooks or Martin.
Completely agree here. Saying that Battier is a Moneyball dream is quite ironic since he is known mostly as Mr. Intangibles amongst anyone who follows The Rockets. I severely doubt Battier was acquired for his +/-.
Ummm...we're rebuilding from the Yao/McGrady era?? That golden era of franchise deliciousness??? I'm going back a bit farther than that. I'm old. 13 seasons. the Lakers and Celts never experienced 13 seasons of one playoff series victory kind of futility...and it looks like we're going to make it 14 this year. Rebuddle is my new favorite word. Do you really want to compare the success of the Astros over the last 13 seasons with the Rockets? Really? The Rox play in a league where more teams make the playoffs than don't....guess how many times the Astros would have been in the playoffs over the last 13 seasons if MLB had the same playoff structure as the NBA. The Astros play in a league where making the playoffs is celebrated with champagne and specially printed tshirts. The Astros were in the WS once and the NLCS twice in the last 7 seasons, alone. From 1997 on, they were in the playoffs 6 times. There is no comparison...none...for relative success among those two franchises over the last decade or so. You won't hear me defend Bud Adams or Bob McNair.
Yes, Battier had good +/- numbers, but he is nothing like Maxwell a chucker. Battier hesistates and constantly defers on taking the shot. Artest is more like Maxwell in style and craziness.
absolutely...i didn't say battier was a chucker. i know very well he's not. i said Gay is a chucker. certainly that was the perception of him coming out of college. never saw a shot he didn't like.
I would put early '90s Vernon's defensive impact on a similiar level to Artest, while his offensive would be slightly lower. If you check their stats, Artest had a similiar FG% and pts to the early 90's Maxwell. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/maxweve01.html http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/artesro01.html It would make him a highly efficient Morey player. I don't see how Maxwell would have a bad +/- rating.
rebuddle is a word that apparently iPads think exists. Sorry for the typos on the previous post. As for the difference in success for the Astros management and the Rockets... Well that is a subject for another day but regardless, I find it hard to judge Morey's position to compete for a star player over What the Astros are looking at for the next couple seasons. Not too many fans in Houston will debate Rockets management acquisitions vs Astros management over the past five seasons but we will let that one die. Also there are good reasons why the Astros have been up for sale this offseason.
you weren't talking about Morey...you were talking about Les Alexander vs. Drayton McLane. i never once referenced Morey when I posted the post you just responded to. don't apologize for typos...i have tons. i just liked the word.
We didn't have a 2nd rounder(nor would anyone trade us one) in this past year's draft. So I don't see how we missed out on landry fields, when we didn't have a chance to get him and drafting him with the 14th pick was out the question..
The Lakers, no...but the Celtics just finished a period of only 3 playoff wins in 15 years. And those 3 came in an epic-ly weak Eastern Conference of the time. I'm not saying 1 win in 13 years is acceptable, but I don't think any team (other than the Lakers) is, or has been, rebuddle-proof.
Nope ... its been pretty much confirmed that Morey was a key initiator of that deal. I don't know if he took the lead in all the parameters (e.g. not insisting on getting the draft pick -- though we eventually dumped Rafer to get that pick), but the basic idea of trading for Shane Battier and using our lottery pick to do so came from him.
See, I don't believe that's the case. The biggest thing the Rockets have been trying to do for many, many years was become a top 10 offensive team. Getting Martin entails two things: (1) he will help the offense quite a lot (it appears he has), and (2) gambling that our interior defense would be much improved this year with Yao's returning and through acquisition of more size. Criticize Morey for not shoring up the interior D, but IMO if Yao wasn't going to make a comeback this team had no shot of being a contender anyway. Right now, the Rockets have a lot of "assets", and Morey's task is to trade it in for defense. This is now pretty much a completely a Morey-built team, so there's no excuses anymore. If the Rockets don't acquire an impact defensive player in the interior (NOT a resigned Yao) between now and next season, I would consider it a big managerial failure.
There are 4 teams, including the Rockets, that have had 1 playoff series win in 13 years. Yep, there are 3 other teams. Whopee. We are making records!
I rather have Patrick Patterson over Landry Fields. They would have seriously been reaching for Fields at 14, when he was projected to go mid 2nd-round. Nice player, but the Rockets have enough shooting guards. Rockets needed more 6'9"+ players.
