With our starting five looking not too shabby at the moment, Morey went ahead and stocked the rest of the roster with unproven talent/rookies. I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, but here are the two scenarios I see these moves pointing to: Scenario 1. Morey believes that these guys can step up and be a formidable bench unit. In any sport, a team grows with continuity and triumph through adversity; he believes that through trial and error this group of young guys have what it takes to contribute to a playoff contending team Scenario 2(what I consider the most likely reason for Morey's moves) We are targeting a non unrestricted free agent. All of the players on our bench are still in their rookie contracts, or have non guaranteed contracts. This gives us a lot of flexibility when the right bargain may present itself. Another piece of evidence I believe points to this scenario unfolding is that the Lin trade exception has not been cashed in yet. If Morey was serious about making this the bench for our season, why would he wait on acquiring a veteran to bolster our second unit? A man with a reputation for being the best at managing assets does not let millions of dollars go unused. Whether it's Bledsoe, Monroe, or whoever, the rockets have the ability to snag a disgruntled player/ restricted free agent with the assets they currently have available.
We only have two seasons before Howard can opt out. We can't wait too long until the third star decides to come on board.
I really don't think morey is doing this. You have the best shooting guard in the game as well as arguably the best center and we're "giving up"? We lost on all the big unrestricted free agents, but that has never stopped morey in the past.
A poor performance in 2014-15 will spell doom for us. We will be set back for years. No one will want to come here at all. No top tier stars are available next year. I do like Goran, but not for 15-16 M times 4 years. The Rockets must aim for a 2nd round playoff spot this year, unfortunately that doesn't seem likely unless we can upgrade the team this year.
The team as is... concerning the players and coaches all just have to buy in to playing team defense. The moves that Morey has made (getting rid of almost all the international players) helps in terms of having better athletic talent in terms of playing raw man to man D. If we can get this current group to buy into playing team defense we will be better. Terrance Jones is young but any team contending in the west needs either a guy at the power forward position that can D up against the elite power forwards of the west or you need a team defensive strategy that doesn't leave guys like Jones or Montiejunas in a one on one situation consistently with a elite scoring power forward.
Moves telling us? Forget moves and just focus on Morey's own words. He said matching Parsons would complete the big three, so he obviously clearly admittedly wants a third wheel better than Parsons. I find that staggering, because only one or two players like that become available each year, and they usually cause a bidding war.
Morey now knows that winning can't compete with the 5 year deal. Morey will trade for a player and lock him up long-term.
If the other team doesn't want to do a sign and trade, your snag a restricted free agent thing goes out the window.
Just like all of us, Morey knows that he can't let this year go to waste because of Dwight's longevity issue. I agree with OP on Morey bringing in someone with the assets and money accumulated.
I dont see a situation where Bledsoe becomes a rocket. The suns will match whatever offer we give him unless its ridiculous (like the Parsons contract he passed on)
What Morey's moves tell us is that he is making use of a market inefficiency born out of a racial bias.
that our starsearch will continue to air? be ready for 2016 something big is happening on july 6th of that year, at 1:34 pm.
He's telling us he doesn't know how to put together a championship team. He can find cheap undervalued talent for a 7th-8th team. But he doesn't understand anything outside of cheap contracts
"giving up" as in giving up to improve the team as of now. He's in the mind set if we can't improve the team to a championship contender, may as well wait for next year and let the current team gel for 1 more year and see where it goes. not much he can do now as most of the FAs are gone.
Agreed. These stars are so hard to get(it was crazy enough that rockets somehow got Harden and Howard together). I would guess there are about 50-60 players in the NBA that are considerably better than Parsons and Morey's plan is to acquire one of them. The problem is that these type of players very rarely become made available via free agency or trade. And if somehow one player does become available AND Rockets have the most attractive offer there is still not guarantee that player would be a good fit for the Rockets roster. Morey is counting on a lot of different things to fall his way and even when almost everthing falls into to place there are guys like Bosh who chase other things besides winning.
