your roster is not bad. butler is the 3rd center, landry is the 3rd pf (inactive roster), snyder does not have the size to play small forward, so mcgrady will interchange there when needed.

We have 17 players on the Roster now. Dump Reed and Sura and you're down to 15. Three players will be inactive.

    What u talking bout Willis!!

    http://sonicscentral.com/blog/?p=1243

Adelman knows defense! People confuse about Adelman D coaching.

The traditional knock on him has been that he’s a bit laissez-faire on defense, but some analysis shows that he’s actually had some pretty good defensive teams. In 2005-06 his last Kings team finished the season in the middle of the pack defensively; 13th out of 30 at 105.2 points per 100 possessions. That is an impressive feat considering that the Kings frontcourt was mostly comprised of players who are not defensive stalwarts except for Ron Artest – Brad Miller, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Kenny Thomas to name a few. And the same is true before Artest arrived in Sacramento. From 1999 to 2003 the Kings consistently had above average defenses (again using points allowed per 100 possessions):

    1999-00: 11th
    2000-01: 7th
    2001-02: 6th
    2002-03: 2nd

And if we go further back to his salad days as head of the Drexler/Kersey/Terry Porter Portland Trailblazers, Adelman’s defensive credentials are even more impressive. In 6 seasons with the Blazers his teams had a top 5 defense every year until his final season, 1993-94. Had this year’s Sonics managed anything close to that level of defensive efficiency they would have been a completely different team.

Adelman's coaching will be a thing of beauty. I expect a top 5 defensive team in the Rockets and their offense will be clicking too. The core players already know how to play defense ala JVG so the transition to more of the same defense shouldn't be difficult for Adelman. The difference is that our offense will be firing on all cylinders. Can't wait for it to happen!

it's a shame that adelman gets labeled simply as an offensive genius. his kings teams got better and should have won a chip b/c their D was one of the top 2-3 in the league, w/ the #1 in defensive efficiency for several years.

his blazers team were also GREAT, not good, defensively during their peak years.

u can play defense without sacrificing offense (which was what JVG did -- packing the paint, don't let anyone run out after a defensive rebound...)

we have many good individual defensive players that the drop off (if there IS ANY) will be very negligible. tmac, battier, francis, james, yao, hayes are all good-great individual defensive players. scola is a good hustle player.

we're fine defensively. the challenge (which has always been the case) is to see if we can find help for tmac and yao offensively. that is the main task of adelman.

can adelman create an offensive system where he can get tmac/yao easier shots and run sets where others can chip in consistently? i think he can.

Thibodeau and Clifford will not stay after JVG gone no matter what. It's not becuase they're bad coaches, it's because they are assistants of JVG, The head is gone, the other parts of the body also need to go. New men in, and old men out, that's the way thing works. Do you think coach A will be happy that Rockets hire him as the head coach but not allow him to choose his own coaching staff?

As for the Rockets' defense this coming season, We don't really need to worry about it that much. JVG has planted the defense mentality to every players's brains and it's not likely it will disappear right after his leave. we should pay more attention to the new offense system that coach A will bring to Rockets and how every player will fit in this system. I personally think that will be very interesting.

Finally, I don't think "Defense wins championships", I believe Balance win championships, and Rockets hasn't been a balanced team for couple of years. It's time to change.

Defense wins championships, UNLESS your team offense field goal percentage is 27th out of 30th in the league. I'm glad the old regime is swept away. I'm not sure their defensive schemes would have worked with Adelman's new offense. JVG sacrificed certain things on offense, so that his defense will look better. I'm sure Adelman has a defensive system that works best with his offensive schemes.

Its way too soon to be judging Landry. What we can judge him on is his college performances. Some of the oft published game logs from last season:

    @ Florida - 39 min // 8-14 FG // 18pts, 10reb, 4ast, 3stl, 1 blk
    @ Arizona - 38 min // 6-10 FG // 8-8 FT // 21 pts, 13 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk
    @ Ohio St - 36 min // 9-16 FG // 6-6 FT // 24 pts, 2 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk
    @ Oklahoma - 35 min / 10-13 FG // 10-12 FT // 30 pts, 7 reb, 3 stl, 1 blk
    @ Iowa - 38 min // 6-11 FG // 7-11 FT // 20pts, 11 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 4 blk

I wanted to highlight road games, against legitimate programs with above average post players. Oden kept him off of the boards, but couldn't keep him away from the rim. He was making plays all over the court against Noah and Horford. The Iowa game was their second @ Iowa in 2 weeks, and he played poorly the first game.

Look again, Adelman has had several teams in the top 5 in defense including one team (with Portland, I believe) that was the best defense in the league.

we will see about all of this....if jvg was a dope, whether adelman is an offensive genius, if the defense drops off, if novak snyder wells francis are better options than head...if tmac plays more and better, if yao is even more efficient, if thibodeau and clifford are missed, if the front office promotions work out over the long term...

we have been in the lottery 5 of the past 8 years. we have won 50+ games 2 of the past 3 years but lost in the first round. the team has only won 50+ games i think 7 times in its history.

so we will see. but if it all doesnt go smoothly, dont be the first to cast a stone at adelman. it wont be his fault. hes a very good coach. it wont be about coaching.

Changes are hardly ever smooth. But we are certainly taking small steps in the right direction.

    What more does Houston Need?

I think we need to look at the Adelman teams of the past and see why they didn't win championships. They had the defenses. They could score. Why didn't they win championships?

    Championship are won by:

    a) Having a player that can take the game and impose his will no matter what(Jordan, Dream, Shaq, Wade one series). This option beats option b.

    b) Having vastly superior tallent/teamwork. (Not in this western conference, heck not even in Texas)

I don't think Adelman has ever had a player that would shoulder the team and refuse to lose.(Bonzi did it for one series)

What we need is for Yao or T-Mac to step up and be the man in the playoffs and bring home a championship. Until they do, we will always be an also ran like the Mavs/Kings/Suns. We have a good enough coach and good enough tallent.
