I don't think the Spurs have the same pull as the Celtics do, they're in a very small market and don't have the rich history the Celtics did. Once Duncan retires and Manu and Parker fade, they'll have some issues, but still be competitive. The real issue will be when Buford and that FO is gone. They better hope Buford's there to build around the player they get the next time they tank, otherwise they're in trouble.
I remember there was a Spurs-Mavericks game this season where Popovich played 5 bench players the entire 4th quarter + OT. Neal, Green, Bonner, Splitter, and someone else I forgot. Not many coaches have the balls to not play at least 1 starter in OT.
Everyone knows their role, Pop isn't afraid to check anyone (even Duncan), they have probably the best PF to ever play the game, they make smart financial decisions, and they are disciplined on both ends. You rarely see the Spurs waste a possession. When the big 3 are done, I wonder if they'll ship out Tony Parker, tank, and build it back up again.
Their scouting department is leaps and bounds better than any other franchise. Period. Most of these guys (including Parker, Scola, Dragic, and Ginobli) were LATE 1st or even late 2nd round picks. 2011 Kawahi Leonard 2009 DeJuan Blair 2008 George Hill Goran Dragic (sounds familiar) 2007 Tiago Splitter 2005 Ian Mahinmi 2004 Beano Udrich 2003 Leandrinho Barbosa 2002 John Salmons Luis Scola (sounds REAL familiar) 2001 Tony Parker 1999 Manu Ginobli 1997 Tim Duncan
Pro, ok, I'll stop the Bold Face but Facts are Facts. A 100x better location still has not given you the satisfaction of a championship; Fact.
