Give me a break. You really think that even might be a reason the Rockets didn't draft gay? LOL It's simple. Rockets were in immediate title mode. Battier was going to have more of an impact in terms of wins in the immediate future. It would be interesting if Gay were here right now, thought. I can almost here the fans complaining about how he's not a true superstar and he is fools gold because the Rockets are still losing (much like the Griz).
The Spurs had a done deal with the Danny Ferry's Cavs, but when Ferry pulled out at the last second, the Spurs ended up trading Scola to the Rockets for Vspan and a bag of peanuts....or was that a bag of peanuts and a second round pick.
Both Ferry and Mike Brown came out of the SA organization. They were offered Scola first before Houston was. Pay attention. There might be a quiz.
Danny Ferry was drafted by the Cavs! Pay Attention there might be a quiz. (I realize not talking about as a player just showing my age)
That's like saying you have a high IQ because you got rich buying a TX Lottery ticket and won. The result had nothing to do with YOU. Right place + right time <> Smarts
Det, at the time of the trade CD was on his way out and Morey was the apple of Les' eye. As many sources attest, Morey engineered the trade despite Alexander's reservations. With all respect -- sincerely -- I do not agree that it was the right trade at the time.
I think it's pretty settled it's a moneyball/moreyball decision. Also, I talked to a VERY senior executive (or former) with the rockets (no lower than the executive vice president level) and asked him about the decision several years later. He made it very clear it was a statistical move - that the management had to convince Les to go for it because Les didn't see what was the big deal about Shane. He was ultimately convinced, which is why they did the deal. The exec said that they did not expect Rudy to get so good quite so fast. Given they were trying to win right then with Yao/TMAC, the move for Shane was relatively reasonable. I like Shane a lot. Obviously Rudy has become a very good talent. However, I think he is completely overpaid. We would have lost him as a restricted free agent rather than paying him the max.
Being in the right place at the right time is Morey's whole bag, though. That's the magic. Why is that not good enough?
Man the guy gave our 2 superstars the best supporting cast in the league, it's not his fault that our 2 superstars broke down and one of them gave up on his team.
Care to name those sources? Ive seen far more sources say otherwise. I find it terribly unlikely that Morey(who had only been here for a few months) had the power to over-ride both Cd and Les at that point in his Houston career. I find it far more likely that your bias against him causes you to believe things that have shaky factual basis, but feel free to prove me wrong, I would welcome it.
Lowry has done very well to keep Rockets as a medocore team after losing 2 best players in 2 years for basiclly nothing(injuries). Just a few years ago, Rockets would have been worse than Cavs without Yao/Tmac. Rockets have been unlucky recently, but it's not really Morey's fault. Find my another GM who can keep his team competing for a playoff spot after losing their 2 best players in 2 years?
They were not bamboozled, the Rockets never wanted him. They were after Brandon Roy and were not very high on Rudy Gay. He is often overrated on this board as well.
I have searched high and low and can't find the link on the internet. WFAN is a big AM sports radio station in NYC. And they love Gundy. Very shortly after VG was let go by Houston, VG was a guest on WFAN. He was asked about the Battier for Gay trade. Van Gundy's exact words were as follows.... Morey brought the deal to the table. Les thought it was too much and felt the Rockets should get the MEM pick. But Les eventually signed off. . Now...I can't find the link, but I 100% know what I heard come from Jeff Van Gundy's mouth. And there is absolutely nothing that will change my mind on the subject. Trading away the rights to Rudy Gay was pure Morey. A No Stats All Star is NOT a CD pick.
why so hard on morey? he inherited yao and t-mac, which didn't really put him on a great spot. after this year, we will have a team that is all morey, let's just wait and see.
how do we have a "bash morey" thread without mentioning brad miller... i still cant believe morey let adelman convinced him to get this tool.
