I was so suprised that it didn't do better in the theaters. Anthony Hopkins was absolutely at his best in that movie. I thought it was an award winning performance. What kind of took away from that movie was Brad Pitt. He was ok. His character required a dynamic performance though. I thought they could have cast that role better. If so, that movie would have been a legit hit.
Three Woody Allen flicks come to mind that I absolutely watch everytime I see them coming on cable. "Celebrity" "Bullets over Broadway" "Small Time Crooks" hillarious Other movies, "Blow", I just don't understand why critics didn't think it was as good as "Traffic" Anyone ever seen a movie called "The Apostle" with Robert Duvall. HBO is currently showing it a lot. "A Bronx Tale". Anybody catch that the kid who played C was the idiot on the The Sopranos in the second season, the one who tried to get made by capping Christopher. I don't know if "Donnie Brascoe" gets the credit it deserves either. To me, its right up there with "Casino" and "Good Fellas" Faggetaboutit.
Another vote for Meet Joe Black. Criminally underrated film. Also: Midnight Run - Another Martin Brest flick. He actually made Charles Grodin seem funny. The Thin Red Line - I know it received 7 Oscar nominations, but it seems like most folks who've seen this movie hate it with a passion. Personally, I think it gets better every time I see it. In fact, I like it more than Saving Private Ryan at this point. Unbreakable - M. Night Shyamalan's best film IMO and one of the finest superhero movies ever made. Everything about this flick was perfect. The acting, the writing, the score, the cinematography, and the ending which tied it all together. Yet everyone b****ed about this movie not being more like the vastly overrated The Sixth Sense. Star Trek III: The Search For Spock - People seem to pile on this movie for being an odd-numbered entry and for not living up to the standard of its brilliant predecessor, Wrath of Khan. But it's still a very good movie with a great story. Kirk and crew sacrifice everything to save their friend, Captain Spock. This flick has aged a lot better for me than Star Trek IV(you know, the one with the whales). The Ref - Denis Leary, Kevin Spacey, and Judy Davis b****ing at each other for an hour and a half. What more could you ask for?
David Lean's "Ryan's Daughter" is another great film that was overlooked. It had one of Robert Mitchum's greatest performances and stunning cinematography. Also agree about "Go" and The Fifth Element" (which has one of Willis's best roles). And, of course, "Blade Runner", which was a commercial failure when released, but is now seen as one of the greatest (if not THE greatest ) SF movies ever made. Superb film by Ridley Scott and great acting by Ford and the supporting cast.
Two excellent choices. "Small Time Crooks" really cracked me up and I saw "Blow" in the theatre and I really like it also..
Boondock Saints. Little seen here in America since it got pushed out of most theaters after Columbine, but the DVD release is getting the name around, and a sequal is wrapping up. I also agree with Go, Donnie Brasco, and 5th Element.
Two that just aren't that well-known: Three Kings The Negotiator One that is very well-known...people just hate it: Godfather Part III
The Outsiders The Valachi Papers (how I wish they would someday put this out on VHS or DVD) My Favorite Year Mystery Train, Down By Law & Night on Earth...three highly underrated Jim Jarmusch movies
A.I. Repo Man (the movie that Pulp Fiction ripped off) Pee Wee's Big Adventure Cabin Boy that's all I can think of for now
