Not even close, the end of Empire is so awesome - it forces you to watch Return of the Jedi. Empire Strikes Back Return of the Jedi A New Hope Revenge of the Sith These two should be not be talked about as Star Wars films. They didn't happen. Attack of the Clones The Phantom Menace
I think ROTS would have been AMAZING had they included a clip at the end which flashed back and revealed all the Emperor's plots, and how they combined to turn the republic into the first galactic empire. I'm likening this scene to the one at the end of The Usual Suspects, when they finally realize who Kaiser Soze is. As it is, it was by far the best of the prequels... and it does cross my mind when I'm watching the OT now... but it still can't match any of the first 3.
I actually liked Attack of the Clones. Watching it on the opening weekend was one of the best movie experiences I've ever had. It was a packed house, full of enthusiastic fans. I stayed away from any spoilers, so I didn't have an inkling about Yoda getting down with his bad self. But the very second his shadow entered into frame for that scene, the whole theater erupted (since this was on Saturday and seemingly everyone else had already seen it). It was an amazing experience. I'd rate it something like: Empire Strikes Back Revenge of the Sith A New Hope Attack of the Clones/Return of the Jedi (Tied) Phantom Menace
We have a winner. One of the best movie theater experiences I ever had was when they reran the original trilogy in the movie theaters (10 yrs ago?). Few movies are such a thrill like Star Wars on the big screen. Even though I saw them a few times on my tv, it was still a shock walking out of the theater. I wish they would do it again. Now if they would've got Natalie Portman in a golden bikini that would automatically catapult one of the new movies to the top of the list.
I gotta go with the first one. When I was a kid and saw it when it first came out, that was the ****!!!
Empire by a long shot. A New Hope Then: Jedi Sith I won't even rank the feces disguised as Menace and Clones. Especially Menace...the only thing that saved it was Maul and some good lightsaber scenes. That kid and Jar-Jar made me wanna slit my wrists
i know HBO HD been showing a lot of these recently (the original 3 in HD looks amazing) but has anyone seen ROTJ on HBO HD? it seems that I keep seeing episodes 1,2,3,4,5 but not the last one. I have been trying to DVR it to watch later but couldnt. anyone know if it will be on in the near future? i was going to get cinemax just for their stars wars hd maraton last november but sadly and oddly dish network has the cinemax channels but not cinemax hd
Keep checking because I've seen it 2 or 3 times in the last week. Not sure about HD because I don't have an HD TV. Speaking of ROTJ, here's a question: Had Luke turned to the Dark Side like the Emperor wanted him to, would Vader and Luke have killed the Emperor and ruled as master and apprentice? Or would it have been the Emperor and Luke? Because after all, always 2 there are....no more, no less.
HBO Link It looks like in March you will be in luck. If HBO East has it, it should be the same on HBO HD
I caught it at the midnight showing(i.e. the first time the public had seen it) and they still erupted when his shadow approached Dooku. Obviously these were diehard fans who knew all the spoilers, but it was still insanely loud in that theater. I knew Yoda would fight, but I didn't know how ridiculously fast he'd be with a lightsaber. As for how I'd rank them: The Empire Strikes Back Star Wars Return of the Jedi Attack of the Clones . . . . . . . . Revenge of the Sh-t/The Phantom Menace(tied for worst) With the exception of Episode II which I still enjoy to this day, the prequel trilogy was a disaster. The Phantom Menace was plagued by lazy, wooden acting, an almost non-existent plot(did we really need to devote 2 hours to Palpatine becoming Chancellor?), horrible dialogue, a hideous-looking Yoda puppet, and the most ill-conceived character in motion picture history, Jar Jar Binks. It's salvaged just barely by the kickass podrace, John Williams' score, Ian McDiarmid's portrayal of the two-faced Palpatine, and Darth Maul. Revenge of the Sh-t's biggest failing is in the storytelling department. The acting still sucked for the most part, but we were used to it by then. Where this movie was a disaster was in its depiction of Anakin's turn to the Dark Side. The dude literally became Darth Vader for no reason whatsoever. It's like Lucas didn't even bother trying. And do I really have to recap Vader's infamous intro in the black suit?
even though i saw the OT on USA a lot growing up (born in 81 so never saw them in theatres), and even saw the rereleases back in the 90s, i'm glad HBO is showing them so much right now b/c i had forgotten a lot of it. well i remember pretty much how it all unfolds, but i had gotten the order and the details of some things out of whack over the years. i watched the first 1.5 hours or so of Empire last night and have the last hour recorded to watch today and damn it's a good movie. i've always heard everyone say it's the best and now that i'm older i'm seeing why. just so much cool **** going on, action, good plot, the whole "i am your father" thing. very good movie, so i voted for it. if lucas really thinks it's the worst, then it's just amazing how different his idea of how to direct a good movie is than just about everyone else's. it's kind of amazing star wars is what it is with him directing most of it. luckily the story and world he thought up is so engrossing and his dedication to special effects and making the OT look great for its time were able to overcome lucas the director. i would probably put ROTJ 2nd. saw the last hour or so last night also (but missed out on jabba) and the final light saber fight was great and vader turning on the emperor is just so good. one thing that pisses me off about the NT is that it makes Vader seem so pathetic now (which is the whole point b/c he is, but it still sucks). before he seemed like the most badass villain ever, a guy who could kill anyone and scared everyone, and he had that intimidating voice and outfit. thanks to the NT, you see he's just the emperor's b**** all the time, he's mostly machine, has turned to the darkside after being manipulated and not b/c he's a badass, has led a sad life, and is just some old, burnt up scarred dude who hates what he's become. while the OT has it over the NT so bad, i think i might still put ROTS over A New Hope. the special effects, the badass light saber fights, watching the empire come into being, that was all really good. with A New Hope you've still got to set everything up so that holds the excitement factor back a little. what's crazy is how revolutionary the special effects were back then and yet still how clunky they look today.
he would've killed vader. the emperor was too persuasive and manipulative to let anything else happen. if luke lets his hate get the best of him, the emperor would've directed it into killing darth and then luke would become his apprentice. the emperor seems to be the most powerful of anyone, jedi or sith, so i don't see him not getting his way at that point. BenignDMD mentioned never seeing star wars. i was watcing Empire when my roommate came home yesterday and he said Jedi was the only one he had ever seen except for a few pieces of the others. and my last roommate had basically never seen any of them either. i mean practically the only 2 people to ever not see any of it (well 3 including Benign) and i have them as roommates back to back?
Up until about 2 years ago, Return of the Jedi was my favorite... and I saw it in MEXICO. Not much was lost in translation (subtitles). Liam Neeson's acting made me hate Episode I. Add this one to your list of geeky things on the other thread
I dont really care for any of them, but I though The Phantom Menace was the best.. I'll go run and hide now..
Your opinion is your own, even though its WRONG. The original Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture. BEST PICTURE. Its the only one of all the SW movies to receive that nod. The character development and the story were completely amazing and entirely revolutionary. It is truly one of the greatest movies of all time, and the academy recognized that way back in '77. I'm 31, for reference, and my college roommate back in the mid-'90s, who was also my age, had not seen the original trilogy. Not only that, but he didn't even know that Vader was Luke's father. We were both born in the mid-'70s and grew up in the Star Wars era of toys, movies, costumes for Halloween, and more toys. That just floored me. I mean, as hard as it was to believe, I could accept that he hadn't seen the movies, but to not even KNOW that Vader was Luke's father is something else entirely. Some things people are just supposed to know, and that's one of them. Its like not knowing that the Nazi's were bad guys or that Babe Ruth played for the Yankees. I told everyone. We made fun of him throughout our entire college career.
