My list is as follows: TMNT Doug Thundercats Voltron that one cartoon with Gretzky, Jordan, and Bo Jackson GoBots Tom and Jerry and you are going to laugh at me for this: Muppet Babbies
Does anyone remember the Super Mario Bros. cartoon? The parts with the Mario Bros. sucked, but every Friday they'd show a Zelda cartoon, and that was a pretty fun show. Others: TMNT, Voltron and Transformers above all else because in the Movie, they actually KILLED most of the regular characters. (I realize now, of course, that they were just playing us kids for fools and forcing us to buy all new toys, but it was still damn cool.)
woody woodpecker thundercats ducktales and of course teenage mutant ninja turtles also all roadrunner and coyote cartoons (maybe still my favorite)
Scooby Doooooooooo is my all time favorite. Another all time favorite (even though it's not an animated cartoon) was the Three Stooges. Woowoowoowoowoowoowoowoo. Some others would have to be: Speed Racer Johnny Quest Tom & Jerry The Roadrunner Dudley Do Right Charlie Brown Dennis the Menace (not animated) Leave it to Beaver (not animated) Tweety Speedy Gonzalez Donald Duck Popeye Casper Yogi Bear Rocky & Bullwinkle The Jetsons The Flintstones Woody WoodPecker That's all I can think of for now.
One thing about this thread, is that you can pretty much tell how old each poster is by the cartoons that they think are old school. Suddenly, I feel real old. NOT!
Woody Woodpecker, Underdog (with the Go Go Gopher Indians), and Tom & Jerry are some of my faves, but my absolute favorite is still the Looney Tunes, especially the Foghorn Leghorn ones.
For comedy, nothing beats Tom & Jerry. I like old Warner Brothers Cartoons. too. For action/adventure: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Transformers Voltron (Lions only) G-Force ThunderCats (Hoooooooo!!!!!) G.I. Joe Dungeons and Dragons X-Men Spider Man Cartoons rule.
I can't believe that I forgot about Underdog as well! All of the Ward-Scott cartoons were great especially these: Rocky & Bullwinkle Dudley Do-Right Underdog Super Chicken Roger Ramjet But the one I loved more than any of these were Commander McBragg. He appeared on the Underdog show and I think the Dudley Do-Right show. He was this old guy who always liked to tell people (who never wanted to hear it) these stories about how he did these crazy and ridiculous things. An example was when he was trapped by some Native Americans in a canyon. Realizing that there was probably an echo to the canyon, he yelled out, "You're surrounded, drop your weapons." The echo made it sound like there were 50 troops with him and of course the Native Americans surrendered. That was great stuff! Also, like dean, I loved those Christmas stop-motion specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, The Year Without a Santa Claus, and Rudolph's Shiny New Year. I especially loved The Year Without a Santa Claus with Heat Miser (Mr. Green Christmas) and Snow Miser (Mr. White Christmas).
Manny What was the name of those claymation cartoons that used to come on Sunday Morning before Sunday school? It was a little boy and his dog and they always had some sort of morality tale. Dangit! What was the name???
Geez, mc mark, I don't know. Maybe it was Aesop's fables, but that is a guess. The Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) used to always show in the mornings during the week, bible cartoons. I can't remember the name of the one for the Old Testament. But the New Testament one was called "Flying House". These kids and this nutty professor type would always have problems with this house going to all these different times in the New Testament. As a result, these kids would always get to see things happen like the birth of Jesus, the betrayal of Jesus, the crucifixition, etc. , and later things with Paul. It was great, but I don't know the answer to your question. Maybe Behad knows.
I'm with MadMax, Speed Racer mesmerized me even in college. mc mark, it wasn't a "boy and his dog;" it was a dog and his boy. Did <b>Mr. Peabody</b> ever teach you anything. No one has mentioned the cartoon with the best music: <b>Johnny Quest</b> <font size="1">what makes me think DoD likes this one, too?</font> Here's the classic "Let go of me frog face!" clip. old school is where it's at. you guys have taken me back. I won't name a favorite; I'll only name the ones that were cool, with a comment for some: 1) super laff-a-lympics was the first that came to mind. that damn race never got old! drats, drats, and double drats, muttley! 2) krofft & martin's [?] adventure something-or-other. this was the show with Land of the Lost and the Bugaloos. I would give my right nut to know the name of the cheeky young actress who played the cute Bugaloo . she was the first female I was ever attracted to. does anyone have a website on those old shows? she was so perfect. to this day, if I read a book, and I have to imagine a pretty girl, that pretty girl will to this day look an awful lot like Miss Bugaloo. 3) superfriends. justice league of america. that pimpin' villains' pad in the middle of the swamp. 4) speed racer. even as a kid, you knew something deep was going on with speed and racer X. 5) I can't even believe mr. oily nailed rat patrol. you pulled that one from the deepest depths of my memory. 6) the smurfs. okay, now somebody is going to have to remember this with me. my biggest memory of the smurfs is living in alief as a 5th-grader, and there was supposed to be this awful, real-life gang in Houston that called themselves The Smurfs. does anyone remember that? and the leader was called Papa Smurf, and they wore [of course] blue. and there was even supposed to be a Smurfette. that was really scary to me at the time. 7) g.i. joe. the cartoon wasn't as cool as the comic, though. 8) the muppets. I have a vivid memory of my mom making me tamales, and me eating them at a tv tray watching the muppets. now there's a show that needs a complete dvd set. all the guest hosts! and that bombin' theme music. 9) transformers. the greatness of transformers. I remember many a heated lunchtable debate about which was better, g.i. joe or transformers. 10) voltron was tight. 11) marvel and stan lee had a saturday morning show. . . it may be the spiderman that everyone's talking about. the x-men were on it sometimes. I liked that show a lot. that may be my strongest saturday morning memory. 12) I also remember a weird cartoon that mixed the harlem globetrotters and superheroes like plasticman. I thought that was pretty neat, too 13) MASK is a good call. I haven't thought of that one in a long time. 14) was G-force the one where they had the helmets with visors and the bird outfits? those were dope. 15) space ghost was much cooler before he got a talk show. 16) it wouldn't be right if we didn't pour a little on the concrete for the truly old school great ones: bugs bunny, daffy duck, roadrunner and all the WB chuckleheads, woody woodpecker, tom and jerry and casper the friendly ghost. 17) spent a few sunday mornings getting ready for church with davy and goliath. 18) and I'm MOST pleased to be the first poster to mention a couple of other truly great, truly old school cartoons. . . give it up for: Kidd Video - and - Robotech great thread, Manny, et al. nothing is as fun as being reminded of long-forgotten childhood things.
