"Yao ming looks like he has about a 2 feet vertical, which is pretty good considering he is a very tall asian." WOW. That was one r****ded post...but maybe I missed something here, maybe you would like to elaborate?
j diddy, that means asians can't jump. White man can jump. black man can jump. yellow man can't. Im korean myself, so i'm not being racist.
Black people have denser muscles than other races, and generally are more athletic. But it also means that black people aren't as good at swimming as other races, generally. How many black people do you see in running events, and jumping? Plenty. Swimming? Hardly any.
i dont know who you hang out with, but koreans are just as athletic as any other race. im korean myself, so i should know. jumpers like jong il kim, or lee jin taek.
vertical is so overrated in big men. does anyone know tim duncan's vert? no? why? because it makes no difference when he's whoopin' ass.
i agree with verse. Vertical is over rated. Look at Antonio McDyess. He suposedly had a vertical close to 50 inches out of college and he's done nothing. Duncan kicks @$$ and we dont' know his vertical. BUT, if you look at Hakeem, without his hops, he's not the same player. So, vertical is over rated but not always.
How high was Hakeems vertical? Because for other than blocking shots, he didn't rely too much on it. Hakeem liked to play a lot away from the basket. Always doing the dream shake or going for layups instead of dunks. In his college days and early days with the Rockets he was a dunker first, but it wasnt' until he got his dream shake perfected that he started to win chamionships.
runninhorns, hakeem's vert had next to nothing to do with success. dream's success was based on footwork, speed, balance, and strength. the combination of those things allowed for the biggest asset any big man can have: creating separation from your defender. verts don't create separation all the time, because someone is always taller, able to jump as high or higher, or has the technique to stop you from jumping as high. frankly verts are an overrated stat that kids like to "wow" about when talking about jumping. the reality is that good footwork is 100 times more important than a 45 inch vertical.
(Steve Francis) - (his 40 inch-plus vertical) = ? BTW, anyone know if the preseason games will be on local (Houston) TV? Sorry* if this has already been addressed in another thread. *(not really, just post the damn link )
Seems like your horizontal is equally important. More players seem to glide through the lane these days than take mid range jumpers so it's not how high you can get but how wide you can get.
