I don't even know if it's that, they're getting rolled by teams that don't have a single man who would crack their two-deep.
Zero playmakers at RB/WR/TE, no DL depth, vastly overrated OLmen and secondary...other than that they have plenty of talent.
Sure, they are less talented than last year by the Longhorns' lofty standards- but are they honestly less talented than Iowa State, Kansas State, Baylor, etc other than at a handful of positions? Those teams aren't exactly rolling out first round draft picks or 5 star recruits. Yet they are miraculously able to score touchdowns other than against a prevent late in the game Granted the well is dryer than usual, (somewhat due to lazy awful recruiting that has no real driving principle post 2005) but so dry as to be in the bottom third or so of teams? I don't think so, That level of underachievement here is of historic proportions. Its amazing what happens when you have a competent consistent philosophy executed simply and well, (see Garrett Gilbert in high school or Vince Young in college or noodle armed miget Kellen Moore curremntly) vs. a mix and match scheme that has no rhyme or reason, executed poorly (2010 Longhorns). Actually come to think of it, that is Mack/Davis' problem when it boils down to it, other than with transcendant or at least semi-great players with NFL talent (Ricky Williams, Cedric Benson, Vince Young, Colt McCoy, Jordan Shipley) -> they're unable to produce results even against mediocre teams. Bad, bad, bad.
This is the core of the criticism of Greg Davis. He's great when he can out-talent you. But he doesn't out-strategize anyone. Without players who are simply better than the people on the other side, he is extremely ineffective.
I think they can and probably should forget a bowl game at this point. They probably beat Florida Atlantic and likely get crushed at home by A&M. National Championship game to what's shaping up to be 5-7. It's simply incredible how much they've fallen apart this season. Even if they managed to win the last 2, what would be the point of going to whatever craptastic bowl they would be selected to? I'm not sure how Mack can justify allowing Greg Davis to return at this point. The offense is a complete clusterf*** every week. He's proven that he cannot coach up. He can only manage when he has the top talent. This is college. These guys are only here for a short amount of time. You have to be able to adjust and Greg Davis has proven over and over that he cannot.
I'm almost positive people like DJ Monroe, Desean Hales, Fozzy Whittaker, and John Chiles would be household names at a program like Oregon. The talent is there, the proper scheme is not.
He actually CAN outstrategize people on occasion, he is just painfully slow and inconsistent, at figuring out how to do it (like when it took nearly 2 years to figure out that Vince Young's high school offense would be just fine and dandy for him to run in college). And then he goes to the well again and again and again long after a new facet has become stale. They've usually been able to overcome this slowness but don't have the horses this year.
I read recruitocosm too, and that guy seems to be pretty reliable. He's been money with his recruiting predictions (called Malcolm Brown way before anyone else) and there are some other posters on other Longhorn boards I read that say that this information is what they are hearing as well.
Unless Mack plans to be here for many more years, I don't see how you can't give Muschamp a huge amount of say in the assistant coaches, since you're presumably planning to keep them when the transition occurs in a few years. If I were Mack, I'd almost let Muschamp pick the coaches himself unless they are really people Mack doesn't want.
@ChipBrownOB Orangebloods.com is reporting Greg Davis will not be retained as the offensive coordinator of the #Texas #Longhorns.
