Don't be so sure . A very devout muslim friend of mine was at an event with me, and we checked out the buffet and most of it was not appealing to us, then he came back a few minutes later munching on a steak sandwich and he was like wow these are really good...I just looked at him for a bit...then he went...NOOOO...and I laughed .
I'll try my hand at this question. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia regarding the subject: "Prior to 1931, New York Times reporter William Buehler Seabrook, allegedly in the interests of "research", obtained from a hospital intern at the Sorbonne a chunk of human meat from the body of a healthy human killed in an accident, then cooked and ate it. He reported, 'It was like good, fully-developed veal, not young, but not yet beef. It was very definitely like that, and it was not like any other meat I had ever tasted. It was so nearly like good, fully developed veal that I think no person with a palate of ordinary, normal sensitiveness could distinguish it from veal. It was mild, good meat with no other sharply defined or highly characteristic taste such as for instance, goat, high game, and pork have. The steak was slightly tougher than prime veal, a little stringy, but not too tough or stringy to be agreeably edible. The roast, from which I cut and ate a central slice, was tender, and in color, texture, smell as well as taste, strengthened my certainty that of all the meats we habitually know, veal is the one meat to which this meat is accurately comparable.' " Here is the link that it is cited from: http://web.archive.org/web/20080202122009/http://food.oregonstate.edu/ref/culture/taboo_allen.html The quote in that link is cited to "Seabrook, 1931, pp. 172-173 If you read the article in the link, you'll see that it states that the most difficult aspect of getting a solid account of what human flesh tastes like is that it is mostly second-hand accounts, and that some of the most attainable accounts (like Dahmer, as the article uses for example) would probably not come from trustworthy people. Therefore Seabrook, it concludes, is probably the most trustworthy account of the taste of human meat. Good veal, I suppose... Note that the article actually goes out of its way to address the "pig taste" myth.
So if I was born 2,000 years ago, I would be crazy? Does that mean if I'm born 5,000 years later I'm a genius? If I'm a genius only by today's standards is that because I know what happened 3,000 years ago, or because future seed is just better? 72 virgins FTW! And it better be 72. And if it's 71? I swear *shakes fist*
The real reason we don't eat pork: Man came from pig. Stop eating your grand parents and let them become cavemen. This is backwards.
Did you go to UA as well? I knew that Pizza_Da_Hut was a student there, but he was the only other Wildcat I knew of on here.
The real reason, I'm mean look at these pictures and tell me if you still want a taste??? You combine those two genes together and you get my girlfriend, hahahh!!!
I'm confused how the article says Christians are under the same "law." Did he ask Christians about this? Take a poll? There are some who still adhere to dietary laws...there are huge chunks of the New Testament, written by Jews, discussing what they are to do with the old laws of the old covenant in light of Jesus and a new covenant. Essentially, the church says, "you're free to live by those laws...and free to not live by them." There's a ton of theology in all that (which there's no need to unpack here...go read it)...but the author of the piece in the OP just sorta dismisses it all in such a cute fashion.
That part about human tasting like pig is good to know. If I'm ever in a plane crash with many other people and we are stranded with no rescue and no food (other than people who have died), then it should make the transition to eating human flesh more tolerable. I will be the first to say "tastes like pork" so...eat up.
I've always understood that the prohibition against pork was a cultural adaptation against the tendency for people to get trichinosis from under cooked meats. In ancient times they didn't really understand microorganisms or how to avoid them but they did observe that some behaviors resulted in sicknesses, For the good of the general population, they made laws to avoid some of these behaviors i.e. don't eat pork, don't eat shellfish, don't sleep with whores etc. Overview Trichinosis is infection with the roundworm Trichinella spiralis. Alternative Names Trichiniasis; Trichinellosis Causes Trichinosis is a disease caused by eating undercooked meat containing cysts of Trichinella spiralis. Trichinella spiralis can be found in pork, bear, walrus, fox, rat, horse, and lion meat. Wild animals, especially carnivores (meat eaters) or omnivores (animals that eat both meat and plants), should be considered a possible source of roundworm disease. Domestic meat animals raised specifically for eating under USDA guidelines and inspection can be considered safe. Trichinosis is a common infection worldwide, but is seldom seen in the United States because of strict rules regarding the feeding of domestic animals and meat-processing inspections. When a person eats meat from an infected animal, Trichinella cysts break open in the intestines and grow into adult roundworms. The roundworms produce other worms that move through the gut wall and into the bloodstream. These organisms tend to invade muscle tissues, including the heart and diaphragm (the breathing muscle under the lungs). They can also affect the lungs and brain. There are approximately 40 cases of trichinosis each year in the U.S. Symptoms Abdominal discomfort Cramping Diarrhea Fever Muscle pain (especially muscle pain with breathing, chewing, or using large muscles) https://health.google.com/health/ref/Trichinosis
Any time you bring up religion on the internet it always ends up with people trying to convince themselves we are nothing more than flesh. Truth is none of us know. Either you believe the contrary or you don't.
I'm sure it's been mentioned, but prior to refrigeration eating pork could kill you. So, it was a good idea to create some "rules" to help people avoid death by pork. The conversation probably went like this, "Hey maybe we should put this rule in the Bible/Koran so people will take it literally. Then 2,000 years from now they'll all wonder why they can't enjoy savory pork ribs. MMMMmmm."
Hm... Interesting. Didn't know that Confucius said "don't eat dogs...................................and pigs". I guess I will stop now. Going to read The Analects again to make sure I don't miss anything else. Just kidding here...
Also, the main reason that Muslims dont eat pork is because the Quran specifically forbids it... The verse that forbids pork also mentions the meat of dead animal (ie road kill), and blood.
The Bible: Written by God; edited by people. The Quaran: Written by God, unedited. Has anyone met the author yet? I heard he's really famous.
Yeah I've pretty much abided by the jurisdiction declared in the book. It also states that (paraphrasing),"...but it may well be that you hate a thing the while it is good for you, and it may well be that you love a thing the while it is bad for you: and God knows, whereas you do not know." Goes back to faith in an all-knowing entity, because I certainly don't know all and I doubt anyone here does either. In my opinion, this faith is the main thread that holds together any "religion" or belief system anyone would choose to follow. You have to trust that faith in a greater power as well as guidance towards the correct path in your search for understanding will get you what need to be satisfied in life. I haven't personally felt the "need" to consume pork or drink beer, and if it was necessary for my survival ie: the only thing available on an island between life or death, the book allows flex room to consume. (ooh it rhymed) When someone does reach infinite knowledge, let me know though, I'd have some questions for sure! Btw, that human to pig evolution picture was nastttttttttty.
Cleverly disguised post, you yourself want to turn this into a D&D discussion so you call out the very people you know for sure are going to retaliate and turn this into D&D material....
