On 9/11, I was walking to class with a guy who is a sikh (with the turban and beard) and we were both called "arab mother****ers who should burn in hell" and that our "people" were responsible for this. (neither me nor my friend are arab or Islamic but either way that shouldn't matter) They also said some stuff about his being a "towelheaded bin laden" etc..

To make matters more confusing, I had no idea what had happened at the time since my teachers till that point for some inane reason had refused to tell anyone what had happened. Either way, that was one confusing moment.

WTF? Perhaps you just gave me another "most racist thing ever said" quote? Judging by your other responses, I'd say you made a lot of people's lists today.

Maybe I just made my own list?!

Nah, I don't think it's racist or anything. I use it as a way of playing around with the whole race issue.

The point I was trying to make is Hispanics ARE considered as Whites in the US. The news media make the distinction by saying Anglos are non-Hispanic Whites. A lot of people think that Hispanics are non-Whites which is not true.
    Hope I clarified this.

When I was in Pakistan I was called "Gora". It means peeled potato.

It's not that bad. Only words, but I was openly called "Gora" while I was there. I think it was a racial comment, but they called lighter skinned Pakistanis Gora too, so maybe it wasn't racist completely, but I would have rather just been called by my name, you know?

Growing up I've been called a lot of names, "gook", "chink", "slope", "rice eater" and such. Most of the racism that I've encountered seemed to be of the kind where people expect me to be quiet, reserved, good at math, all of the kind of model minority stereotypes. I think that caused me some problems when I was in elementary school because I'm somewhat sloppy and had problems with basic arithmatics and spelling, thank God for calculators and spell check, but think I was just expected to do better than other students so teachers thought there must be something wrong with me if a 9 year old Asian wasn't excelling in math.

There were a few times that I felt that I was about to get beaten up because of racism the worse was during the Rodney King Riots when I was working with Cal's student newspaper to cover the riots in Berkeley. The rioters were almost all African-Americans and a lot of them were calling me names and telling me to get back on the boat and go back to China, Japan, Korea or where ever I came from. I got jumped by three of them while I was trying to photograph someone kicking in the Gap storefront and somehow got away without getting injured.

Other than that there's been a few times when I've suspected racism, in regard to what seemed like unfair treatment, but don't have enough to go on other than my own feeling.

On a sidenote I've been accused of racism / nationalism by an undergrad who I was the TA for. In grad school a Japanese student acused me of giving him a D since I was Chinese. It didn't help his case that he missed a month of class for no good reason, turned in his term paper a week late and that there was another Japanese student in the class whot got an A.

I've also been called "n^gger" both as an insult and a compliment. When I was a kid some white kids told me I was just another n^gger and once when I was playing a pickup game in my interracial neighborhood I hit three three pointers in a row and I heard a couple of black kids say, "That n^gger can shoot!"

hkomives, sorry, man... I must have left my sarcasm-o-meter at work, man... :D...

Either way, hkomives: HISPANICS are not white, man. We are not considered "white", anyway... Hispanics are any descendants of mixed Spaniard and natives... mostly mestizo... AND Spanish-speaking descendants or from Spanish-speaking ancestry... don't argue that Hispanics are white. You won't win, at least not in the United States.
Like Iroc It, I noticed the irony and the hypocrisy here. Maybe you "spoke" like one of those kids JuliO-R- and I mentioned earlier?

Well, technically you guys are considered white, according to the government and most demographics surveys. But I agree, I don't think many people consider you guys white anyway. Especially if you can just as easily find a brown skinned, brown haired Hispanic as you can find a blond haired, blue eyed one. Well, maybe not as easily but you can.

    In Saudi Arabia...
I don't recall the things they said, but they have beaten the living crap out of me.
The worst was when a group of about 15 saudis started causing **** with a friend and I who were walking back to his house. They little amount of english they spoke to us was calling us American ****s. moderfing white american. stuff like that.

Oh, and those guys were quite the fags. (sorry if that term upsets any of you...but they were). They were making kissing noises etc. and trying to rub my buds ass etc.

Pretty much a full otu rumble started on the soccer field.

I've gotten several dwb's. Driving while black. I've been pulled over and followed several times for no apparent reason.

Several weeks ago I got pulled over on 59 North outside of Shepard, Tx. Officer said I was driving too closely behind another vehicle but there was nobody in front me when he pulled me over. I signaled and went around a truck pulling a load going about 50 in a 65 mph zone. The officer did the exact same thing. I didnt argue with him so he gave me a warning so I couldnt complain.

Homophobia? umm...they literally were rubbing his ass and trying to touch his sac with their hands while making kissing noises. Up until I decked that guy and my friend ran....and then I got the crap beat out of me.

    But yeah...whatever.

Um, is it just me or does that logic seem faulty? Hispanics are not considered whites. The statement points to that some whites are hispanic but not all hispanics are whites. Just like some some Asians (Russians) are white, and you could call white people in Europe non-Asian whites but that doesn't means all Asians are considered white.

Or maybe I've just having bad LSAT prep flash backs.

That's probably the literal translation. It's used as a derogatory term for white people. I guess a peeled potato looks white

"Guay-lo" (spelling?) is also used as derogatory term for white people by the Chinese, my Chinese friends always say it... ("Man this party is too guay-lo-ed out..let's go"). Anyone who knows Cantonese care to explain the literal translation for it? I think it's something like ghost or white devil or something.

I've never really experienced racism towards myself, but I was shocked to find that my parents weren't exactly happy with my choice of girlfriend (she is technically a mix of several races, but looks black, especially to an untrained southern eye).

They've never been mean to her or anything, it's just odd to know that such nice people, who had up until that point in my life never said anything like that to me, still harbor racist feelings.
