He has to hold back because his body will detiorate. To be fair, if he gave it his all every game he would be out the final month of the season just like Yao was. He knows he should attack the basket, but everytime he does, he risks a season ender. Maybe you havent noticed the blood curtling cries everytime he drives. Regardless, in the postseason, when it counts, he drives to the basket nearly every game.

This guy carried the team to homecourt advantage and was fantastic in every game of the postseason. That is ALL that we need from him. He needs help. Even gods gift to basketball Kobe Briant failed without the proper pieces around him. Think back to the first round last year.

I can understand that his body breaks down over the course of the season but to pretend like he paces himself because of that is not completely true. Playing defense consistently isn't going to hurt him, passing up some of the horrible jumpers he takes isn't going to break his body down. Not practicing free throws isn't putting extra wear and tear on his wrists.

I know I have perhaps been too hard on the guy at times but a lot of you give the guy a pass to slack when he is sad or when he is on his period. He just doesn't have the mental toughness or the pride to do what he can do every play. I have come to understand that is part of who he is but it doesn't mean the fans have to make excuses for him.

To answer the original question, I will mention things than he or the organization can do:

    1. Get him another athletic wing player to finish plays. If he doesn't have to expend so much energy offensively then he can do the next thing on the list.
    2. Commit himself to playing great defense so Shane doesn't have to play so many minutes and handicap the offense with his unwillingness to shoot.
    3. Stay in shape. He seems to stay in pretty good shape in the off season so just keep on keepin' on.
    4. Practice better shot selection. Is there a bigger travesty than one of the biggest, most gifted SG of all time shooting in the low 40%s and 70% or below from the line? I swear he checks the stats at half time and says "6 for 9 from the field? Damn. That means I can jack up quite a few horrible shots this half and still finish 8 for 20. No need to go to the rim either!"

A 3rd scoring option that's legit, a healthy all-star Yao in the middle, fans that don't criticize him every other second...this list could get rather long, I better stop now.

I disagree with your mental toughness. I think he works hard and wants the ball in the closing seconds.

I agree however with the free throw shooting. He should be a better free throw shooter.

TMac scored alot fo points and got assists but the team needs another proven scorer or else we will not get over the hump. TMac just needs himself and Yao to stay healthy and for the outside shooters to knock down there shots. The playoff series against the Jazz we lossed when our outside shooting from the supporting players was poor.
No matter how well TMac and Yao player we need the clutch baskets from role players or pick up a third scoring option or else they won't win in the first round let alone win a championship.

He's missing a decent pg, a decent bench, and a small forward who can do more than just shoot the corner three.

I honestly agree with what most of the people on this forum are saying. TMac still has the skills and ability to succeed at stellar levels. What he needs is that boost of confidence which at times comes with great teammates. Watching his first year with the Rockets you could see a swagger that has somewhat dissappeared throughout the seasons as he had lost it during his last year with the Magic as well. When we finally got the talent Hakeem needed to succeed he brought us two championships and great results during the playoffs. When we won the two championships it seemed like we had no holes at any positions. That is what we need to get our main star. I will say Raefer has improved but good just does not sum up to great. Our window of oportunity to win with our big two is just fading away slowly. Let's stop looking at just mere potential and start getting these players some much deserved read to help Now players. It took a big three to get us to the western conference finals. It took Hakeem 4 Great starting role players and a strong bench to bring us a title the first time. It took Hakeem a sidekick in drexler and most of the same great role players to win us the second. Let's get Tmac some stellar aide and strong backups to get his confidence back on par. That is what he needs and is lacking.
