I always used to get the chicken soup when I worked close to little Saigon. Drop some of that hot sauce in and the hot oil would rise to the top and turn the soup orange. I still get cravings for that, along with the lettuce wrap spring rolls ...yum! (And fwiw, a Vietnamese intern took us there the first time. She also insisted that we all try the French coffee. As we're drinking this mud-like substance, we notice she's not having any. 'Why not?' 'Oh, it gives me the runs' 'oh, er ... thanks a lot' )
+ mmmmmmmmm Pho is great. I usually just keep my Pho simple and get Pho Tai, which is just the lean beef. Nothing beats a nice bowl of hot Pho during the winter
I went to Pho King the other day. The waiter came out and said, "Hi! My name is Horatio--welcome to the Pho King Restaurant. Here is your Pho King menu. If you have any questions about Pho King, you can ask me or the Pho King Hostess. If you're dissatisfied in any way, feel free to take it up with the Pho King manager. Enjoy your Pho King meal, and don't forget that we have great Pho King desserts!"
Being Vietnamese myself, I can say it's probably the best homemade food my mom ever cooks. Know what...I've just come down from college for the summer. Maybe it's time I ask for a little favor...
So if I make Pho for my mom does that make me a "Mother Pho-cker"? Is anyone else bothered that the Rox almost got beat by a bowl of beef noodle soup? Seriously Pho is pretty good stuff but I've been told not to try to make it yourself since it takes a long time to get the broth right. Also avoid it if you have a peanut of cinamon allergy since sometimes those will be used in the flavoring. I like Vietnamese food but am not much of a Pho fan. I perform Bun (cold rice noodle salad) and my favorite is the Cha Gio Bun with eggrolls and I also like the Banh Mi (Vietnamese Sub sandwhiches). Also if I can find it I'm a big fan of Thanh Xeo (Vietnamese crepe) I'm sure there's places in Houston that have it.
There's a restaurant somewhere named "What the Pho". I love pho. It's so simple, but one of my favorite foods.
Pho Saigon is pretty good downtown. My favorite by far is the Pho Binh trailor that is located on the southeast side of town....off of Beamer I think. There is another place near my wife's work on Tidwell near Hollister. It's called Pho Da Lat, it's really good. There there are a couple good places on Bellaire that I've tried. I'd stay away from the Pho 21's if I were you, but they are better than nothing.
Imho, the 2nd best pho in town is at the very end of Hong Kong IV Mall. I don't know the name, I guess I can look next time. But if you go there on weekends, expect at least a 30 minute wait.
That's some good stuff. What they need is a Pho franchise -- call it "Pho King". I think it might do well.
