What exactly makes Morey a great GM?

He has shown to be mediocre/good so far.

A great GM is one who takes advantage of the opportunities that are there.

A great fan is one who understands that one GM alone cant create an opportunity.

A great GM is to assemble Champion caliber team under Cap space.
And find great starters from late 1st round/ 2nd round draft.

The Spurs Ex-general manager Gregg Popovich

If you don't understand how good DM is you don't know a great GM when you see one. Real life is nothing like association in 2k11. People won't trade you Durant for Kevin Martin.

Morey has done nothing yet to impress me, he is average at best.

Now Danny Ainge and Otis Smith are great GM's. Morey is trash compared to them.

When trade deadline passes and little to nothing happens and we have another subpar year the Morey Hype will die down. I really see nothing happening for Houston this year sports wise. Going with what we got and what we got is simply not good enough.

Like Bill Simmons said about Morey on Twitter:

Morey has done a great job so far with the cards he has been dealt. We can't fully judge him until Yao is out of the picture as our centerpiece.

Fair question. Here is a recent post where I explain how great a GM job (as opposed to a player trade, necessarily) the T-Mac trade was last year.

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=5879265&postcount=138

This is the primary evidence as to why Morey is a very good GM. He has also been at least above average to good in the draft, if not very good (especially given his annual draft position). He has managed not to hand out any truly horrible contracts (which is not very common among NBA GMs).

Those things by themselves make Morey a good GM.

If you want to argue that Morey is not the BEST GM, have at it. You can make compelling cases for several candidates. But I think Morey has proven to be at least a good GM by any reasonable measure.

Nothing. He is getting pushed around by other teams offering him nothing for our best players because they know he is a worthless pushover. Who gives away starters like Ariza for backups who get no minutes like Courtney Lee.

You do realize that it was the Hockey Guy who drafted Dwight Howard, right? And that it was T-Mac's leadership that led them to being in position to draft Dwight Howard, right?

Why would they go through the trouble of applying or petitioning the league for it if they had no intentions of using it and knowing it expired soon?

Pretty much. Like I said, I really dont blame him for not using it and going over the lux tax even more. If this team was thick in the playoff hunt and needed another role player, then I could see it. They still have Ariza's tpe,but they probably won't use that either.

    Silly Spanoulis=Luis Scola
    Late First Rounder=Aaron Brooks
    Early Second Rounder=Carl Landry=Kevin Martin
    Late First Rounder=Donte Greene=Ron Artest
    Trevor Ariza=Courtney Lee
    Rafer Alston=Kyle Lowry
    Late Second Rounder=Chase Budinger
    Mid First Rounder=Patrick Patterson
    Mid First Rounder=Terrence Williams
    Second Rounder=Sergio Llull
Expiring Contract= Jared Jeffries, Jordan Hill, Right to swap in 2011 and 2012 First Round Pick

I am a huge Daryl Morey fan. All the doubters will eat their words soon. We have a treasure chest of expiring contracts, trade assets and cash. More flexibility than anyone in the league.

Ariza shouldn't be a starter on any decent team. Man was a decent backup player on LA.... Lee has been a disappointment but look what he costs compared to Ariza.

Even if no major trade happens, it won't mean that Morey isn't a good GM. He and his front office are doing everything they possibly can (within reason) to make a deal to upgrade this team and/or build for the future. Sure, it will "taint his legacy" somewhat if nothing goes down in the next few weeks, but he can only control so much of what happens in any trade discussions with other teams.

For the examples you listed above, Morey's already won my respect. How others still aren't giving him any is beyond me.

But haters gonna hate, I suppose.

As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Ariza has championship mettle and lee has choking in the big spot down. Ariza on the hornets has helped them become a top 5 defense. What has Lee done to help the rockets? Say what you will, but ariza has intangibles defensively that people overlooked. Same players minus trevor and our defense is worse than last year.

Hopefully he can help out team again if Morey finds something to do with that trade exception ;)
