Ah, man. I love the new Guided By Voices! Robert Pollard has kind of been a running joke to some people I think the past couple of years, because his albums have been pretty week, but he just keeps releasing them and releasing them and releasing them. He's a great songwriter, in my opinion. The guy has probably written and record nearly a 1,000 songs between GBV and his solo projects. I think this new album is great! But Bee Thousand is the album that brought GBV some notoriety back in 1994. It sounds like it was recorded on a karaoke machine, and it wasn't until GBV started recording in studios that they started going down hill. As for New Pornographers. Find Mass Romantic! I like the new album alright, but Mass Romantic is much better in my opinion.
Yeah, I figured it was a bad place to start. There are some good tracks, but I can't see myself getting hooked on it or anything. I'd like more that just a distorted electric guitar and some drums. It's like a demo tape. I can't find Mass Romantic!
I think the music is amazing. The lyrics are all I'm still having a bit of a hard time with, though only on a couple of songs, one of which is "The Song". LOL. "Sing it loud, sing it long"... I don't know. I think I'll eventually get past that though. "Really in Love" is the other one. This guy is amazingly talented. Did he really play every instrument on this thing? It says that in the booklet. Damn. But then it shows everyone in his band. I guess those guys are just his live band or something? I don't know. I just love that mix of heavy guitar and piano...just really does it for me. Such hooks! Damn. I've actually never heard any Meat Loaf ('cept that one video that was out in the mid-90s, I think), but have to check out "Bat out of Hell" now since I've seen this album compared to it a little bit.
Freak, I can tell you everything you need to know about "Bat Out of Hell" and Meat Loaf. Just email me if you are interested.
In my ten disc changer in my car I have: John Coltrane- Love Supreme Outkast- Stankonia Audioslave Bill Evans- Sunday at the Village Vanguard Herbie Hancock- Empyrean Isles Hampton Hawes- For Real! Mystikal- Tarantula Fifty Cent- Get Rich or Die Trying The Meters- Funkify Your Life: The Meters Anthology Wes Montgomery- Incredible Jazz Guitar
Outkast- Speakerboxx-The Love Below David Bowie- Reality The Shins- Chutes Too Narrow Johnny Cash- Folsom Prison Blues Keith Jarrett- Goldberg Variations (Bach)
put out the noisy parts (if you call some parts noisy) and replace them with added sounddetails. More wellrounded songs. Already a bit matured from the debut.
Okay, I have now listened to Andrew W.K.'s new album twice and I like it, but I have to agree that the lyrics leave something to be desired. However, I have never been one to buy music because of lyrics. Yes, it does remind me of Meat Loaf with the piano parts being intertwined with the guitars. However, Meat Loaf has more variety than AWK and the lyrics are more "deep", lol. But if you like the instrumentation on this latest AWK album, I think you will like Meat Loaf/Jim Steinman stuff. I guarantee you that AWK knows who Jim Steinman is and is a fan of his.
