I would only favor trading him if we get back at least one ending contract worth about 5 million. That should leave us room to use an exception to pick up one more quality player next offseason by free agency.

If Les doesn't mind paying the tax, I'm all for him spending money like mad, but when he passed on Posey at 4.9, he showed us his hand. He's not gonna bust a cap if he can help it.

Rice is worth the most to teams which are grossly over the luxury cap. To NY, he would be worth $2 for every $1 of salary, and the time which counts is the end of the season. So a team could get him in midseason and it would save them 20 million come tax time.

In short, Rice may get traded because his ending contract has real value, but the best player I think it gets us is a Brian Grant, or a SAR, or such. Throw in Moochie, stir a minute, and voila - no more dribbledribble.

Well, not much is available next year. Most of the FAs will stay with their teams. There's a number of iffy restricted FA's and a few player options. In short - to get them, you need to overpay.

Maybe the best one could hope for would be Kurt Thomas or Brent Barry, but you'd have to pay more than they make now.

Given the market, my top option is SAR. Two years left on his deal, he can play 3 or 4 as needed. Not a lot of risk, possibly big payoff.

Next option is Grant, and I pass. 4 years is a long time, and Grant seems to have one good year and one bad. I don't like the payoff vs. the committment. I'd rather look at one of Toddie's deals.

Unlike many here, I think getting SAR would be fantastic. He's just about to enter his prime and his contract is not that unbearable for 2 years.

We need to stop making excuses for Eddie Griffin. This is his year. Without Posey, we now have a mish mash at 2 starting positions.

Taking a chance on SAR would be ideal given the right circumstances. SAR must be getting really sick of that place and Atlanta would be smart to start from scratch.

    pasox2,

so you agree. If Rice doesn't land us SAR, then just keep him.

btw: your argument that the FA market is not that good next summer also means that Rice's expiring contract is not as valuable to other teams this summer.

although the 2000 draft was really weak (the one that next summer's restricted free agent crop is from), I view it as a bonanza for middle-class players...if it weren't for the upward pressure caused by having few stars has on a FA market....I still expect guys to rise up and sign for a fair MLE...like they do every year.
