And that might indeed be the rub. Perhaps Rice's expiring contract is not as valuable to us "right now" since this team is not "in contention" for the NBA title. If this team was more desperate such as the Mavs or the Wolves perhaps we would jump at the chance to move Rice (and take on salary + years) to take us to the next level but since this team is STILL a few years away perhaps the team would rather just let Rice's salary fall off the books, stay under the Luxary Tax, gain some mid level FAs with MLE monies each year until we are in full contention.

I'm not following you...how is trading Rice going to save us money vs letting his contract expire? I think the idea of trading Rice is to take on longer contracts...not to save money for paying our own contracts that are kicking in.

What I'm saying is we get to use an MLE every year whether over the cap or not. That will be about $5m next year.

So, you could trade Rice for $9m in salaries back or let it expire and use a $5m MLE + ~$1.5 for resigning Rice, next summer...that would purge $3m in salary for us...while gaining a player and not losing Rice.

imo, the issue is trading Rice expiring contract now, or cashing in on it ourselves, later.

Trading Rice for $9m in contracts back doesn't purge salary. We would have to involve a team with a trade exception or cap space for Rice's trade to purge salary.

His contract is worth a decent player and a bunch of trash, does that interest you?

His contract is so much that a team is not going to give you one player that matches salary-wise b/c more than likely that will be the player that team wants to keep.

The only hope of getting something decent in return would be to ship Rice along with one ofe the 3 best players in the rotation along with a pick to get an impact player.

hey, I know what you were saying. You don't need to defend your post.

I know you were talking about the end result. btw: the end result was Brandon and Marc Jackson for Sprewell.

I'm just saying that implying a very complicated 4 team trade allowing Minnesota to get Sprewell...means we could parlay Rice into something like that...it is just not that simple. Portland couldn't move Sabonis, right?

More than anything else, Atlanta wanted to purge Glenn Robinson---and they took the bath for their future...without Atlanta taking a bath, that trade doesn't happen. So imo, (in terms of likelihood that this could happen for us), you'll either have to evaluate our likely value for Rice in terms of 2 team trade (equivalent to the Atl-Minn part of that trade)...or you'll have to expect to engineer another domino trade of multiple teams swapping bad contracts.

my point is: don't expect too many 4 team trades, and don't expect to be overwhelmed by some favorably unbalanced 2-team trade involving Rice.

I say keep him, and then when it expires work on getting KG. Yao,KG,Francis,Mobley (and whoever) would dominate for years to come seeing as how none of them are that old. Patience is a virtue and championships take alot of assembling, not just hasty decisions that take care of the short term.

Nope...the TWolves haven't plopped down that $30m/year yet. Or with all of the talk about letting Rice expire and using the full MLE, were you thinking Garnett was going to sign with Houston for ~$5m?

nope but its something to work with, they could do a sign and trade or something and get cash back....so they don't lose him for nothing in return atleast. Oh well it was just a thought (probably not a very good one, just wishful thinking)

IF you package Rice with Cat or EG you deliver

    1) matching dollars on a short contract for the trade player
    2) a value player

That's how you get a decent player with a big contract.

You can use that formula to get a Sheed or SAR.

If you let the contract expire - you can't trade for a Sheed or SAR. You have to sign a FA with the MCE at 5 mil.

Alternatively , Rice is part of a package to unload Taylor, Mooch or Cato. Perhaps all three for Grant and Vlad Step.

It's hard to be a leader as the new kid on the block (Rice) when you have 2 know-it alls (Shaq & Kobe) leading in 2 different directions.

The Rockets on the other hand have a younger team that is more receiptive to veteran leadership than the Lakers did. Steve & Cat aren't model students, but they are in no way the head cases that Shaq & Kobe were back then. And Yao comes from a culture that respects elder knowledge and experience.

I would love to keep Rice on after this season for the vet min if he would do it.

If that is your plan then you need to include Francis, Mobley, Griffin and the rest of the roster minus Yao to get him.

    1) They are better off NOT getting anything in return over taking a bunch of crap so they "don't lose him for nothing." Would the T-Wolves rather have the crap you propose, or lose him for nothing and spend $20 million on free agency?

    2) KG's salary will be so high that it is going to require 2 of your highest price players in order to get him here as both teams will be over the cap.

    3) There is really no cap relief to the team b/c now Francis' deal has kicked in and though they are not in luxury tax range, the Rockets are near the salary cap before they fill out their roster next year thus taking on more salary will be limited to the MCE.

Could Rice be traded for a high first round pick in 2004 to a team with cap space and doesn't like rookies (Riley and the Heat, for example) with no other players involved?

so, the Heat is going to give up their high first round pick in 2004 for the right to pay Glen Rice's $9.5m salary this year?

What you described does not produce any sum gain in cap room for Riley, yet, he'll just give up is 1st round pick for him?

think about it: if we had $9m in caproom instead of Rice, do you think anyone on this board would be talking about spending it on Glen Rice, much less giving up a lottery pick for it?

$9m in pure caproom is much more valuable than turning it in for an expiring contract.

If the owner is overconcerned about some lux tax dolars after being handed a total freebie in Yao he actually has no reasonable right to have (lucky pick for a low salary player, future great player, great PR) he should sell the damn team to someone who will. Yao, Francis, Mobley, the City/fans who built him a new stadium deserve better.

you beat me to it!! that's the first thing i thought too.

i don't know where glen rice fits into our plans, other than unloading his contract after this year. i think piatkowski is the same type of player (3pt shooter, no D)....a poor man's rice. as the season continues, hoping rice comes into camp in good shape, he might be valuable to contending teams looking for a lethal shooter....kind of like the baseball "rent a player" trading deadline.

heypartner I am surprised at you! An experienced pundit of the Game wanting us to hang onto a player that should be kept under wraps till near the playoffs and even then might and I say that with hope in my heart, might survive the first round.IMHO Rice has had his day and we should be looking forward to players with a physical and dynamic presence that can still play the Game.

Rice has never been a Leader on the Rockets, Steve Francis was the Leader in every aspect of the Rockets last season. If Rice showed he had any ability to lead ,he would of helped to change the dreadful style of game that we were playing last season.

It's obvious that our first concern is the Luxury Tax. We have to stay below that. We're currently just below it, with at least one more player to sign. Rice's expiring contract will drop us well below the Luxury Tax next year if we just let it expire.

However, that's not the question of this thread. In my opinion, for us to maximize the value of Rice's contract, without hurting our cap situation, we must first identify those teams that are in the market for additional cap space next year. Then, we must break Rice's contract up into 2 or more players, half of which are expiring contracts. That allows us to keep enough cap space to stay under the Luxury Tax, & the other team to pick up an additional $4-5 million in cap space.

    Some examples might be:

Houston sends Rice(expiring $9.6 mill) to NY.

NY sends Kurt Thomas($5.394 mill)/Travis Knight(expiring $4.4 mill) to Houston.

We pick up a solid PF & still maintain a buffer from the Luxury Tax.
NY gets an additional $5.394 million in cap relief at the end of the year.

Houston sends Rice(expiring $9.6 mill) to Detroit.

Detroit sends Clifford Robinson($4.74 mill)/Rebracca(expiring $4.2 mill) to Houston.

Again, we pick up Robinson & still retain $4.2 million in expiring contracts.
Detroit picks up an additional $4.74 million in cap relief at the end of the year.

Houston sends Rice(expiring $9.6 mill) to Memphis.

Memphis sends Swift($4.592 mill)/Knight(expiring $5 mill) to Houston.

Houston picks up Swift & retains $5 million in expiring contracts.
Memphis picks up an additional $4.592 million in cap relief at the end of the year.

Now don't go tearing these trades apart. I'm not saying any of these have a chance. I'm just using them as examples of how we could trade Rice, remain under the Luxury Tax, & still acquire a quality ball player that'll help our team. In all of these scenarios, we'd most likely have to include some form of a draft pick as well. There are some other teams that could do this type of a trade, but there aren't many & you have to realize that some of those teams might not be interested in additional cap space.

you, sir, are on the right path.

if we trade Rice, we have to get back part ending contract and part continuing contract, maybe split down the middle. that keeps us from popping a cap in our own azz with the luxury tax.

I don't see Detroit giving away two big men for Rice.

Don't see Memphis moving Swift for Rice, but it could happen.

Don't see NY doing it either.

but you've got the right approach.

    5 mil in ending contract
5 mil in continuing contract, but we won't get anyone who is a starter, IMO

I'm in the Heypartner camp on Rice. We can get more with the Midlevel exception next year than we can this year for trading Rice and getting more salary than we will have to pay next year. We lost Posey because we couldn't spend 4.9 million. Next year we should be able to get a decent player to add to the mix, and in the mean time, Rice still shoots well.

don't get me wrong: that's not really my position. See the first line of my first post. I'm all in favor of trading Rice. I just wanted to point out that there is a lot of value in just keeping him, using an MLE and resigning him to a vet min until he retires. If we trade him, that alternative course is what i'd compare the trade to.

Not all trades would be better than just keeping him.
