9th or 10th man in the rotation. Situational defender specializing in tricking faster players into backing him down and taller players into bringing the ball low enough for him to swipe at it.
Versatile. Front or back. Top or bottom. Left or right. No matter what way, he's gonna make you sore in the morning
How does he "trick" them into doing that? You make it sound like he's cheating. He plays sound, fundamental defense, and he uses his combination of skills (quick feet, quick hands, lower body strength, anticipation) very well. He has to in order to make up for his deficiencies. There is nothing tricky or cheap about it.
My emminent apologies that I could not graph, chart, numerically display or otherwise portray "trick" in an arithmatic format. "Trick" is the first emotion/thought that comes to my mind when I observe a 7' tall player bringing the ball below his shoulders to be stripped. This as opposed to rising up and just shooting the ball over a player to which the said 7-footer has minimum a 6" height advantage. (Not taking arm length as a factor) Whereas, some persons may want to consider that Hayes is a sterling defender for such a condition...I, on the other hand...shake my head and say to myself..."stupid, why didn't you just raise up and shoot the damned ball"? But then again...this is a condition only derived from watching the game.
Lol man come on. He consistently delivers a positive +/- when he is in the game despite often playing out of position. I think he is a good backup PF, possibly a starter on a team with 4 decent offensive players in the starting lineup. He definitely isn't a zero on offense with his passing, offensive rebounding, and now some crafty moves around the basket.
The hate for Chuck Hayes needs to stop. He might seriously be the only player on the team I consider invaluable.
What more would I expect from you guys that ride Chuck Hayes' jock. I see it...Let's resort to the old plus/minus. That'll be the high ground...our bastion of ultimate proof. Here's a conundrum for you all. Up until tonight's game...where Hayes sat the bench in the Rocket's comeback vs DAL...Hayes had a higher +/- than Kevin Martin... http://www.82games.com/1011/1011HOU.HTM Now, if you want to step to the front of the line and reassure me that Hayes' is more valuable than Martin...(as are Battier and Patterson from a +/- perspective), please feel free to do so. Otherwise, if +/- is your only source of "proof", I'm going to continue to have visions of 6'9"+ players...Chandler, Nowitski, Love, Mahinmi, Nene, etc etc reaching over his Hayes' head for a rebound. Watch the damned game.
unless you can somehow combine hayes defense with martin's offense, i'll say they are equally useless.
What makes you think durvasa watches less basketball than you? BTW, maybe the tall players are stupid to bring the ball down. But since so many players are doing that, perhaps that should occur to you that maybe it is a very natural thing to do playing basketball. And perhaps it is just why Hayes is such a good defender because he knows how to take advantage of opponents' natural tendency. Perhaps that's why some 7-ft athletic freaks cannot play good defense because they have no clue or do not care to study how to anticipate opponents' natural tendency. Perhaps that IS an actual defensive skill as opposed to just stupidity of the other guy. Perhaps that's the very definition of a good defensive player, you know, having actual defensive skills, not just physical measurements.
