I've seen people comment on how it takes Rudy gay 19 shots to get 20 points.. Etc.. That's one point per shot. I would think that it's pretty good. If a guy takes 10 shots to get 10 points. Isn't that efficient? 5/10 What do you base your efficiency on? What do you want to see? Lebron numbers from everyone? Or them playing relatively to their contracts? And no this is not about Rudy Gay. Just players in general.
FG% is bigger in my eyes than pts/shot. Free throw #s also skew that pts/shot so it's not exactly accurate as far as efficiency is concerned (i.e. someone could make 10/12 fts but only shoot 2/8fgs and total 14pts on 8fga).
People who hate a player would stay the guy is inefficient if he scored 20 points on 20 attempts and no free throws.
I read somewhere where the league average for entire teams is >1.00 pts per shot -- like 1.10 That said, I seriously doubt coaches really care about these box score stats, since they have scouts who can chart anything they want. Rudy used to base efficiency on the success of specific plays and possessions. That was more a matter of did it result in a good look or not. And that has a lot to do with the players on the floor who are in charge of execution. So, Coaches are more concerned about efficiency of the entire team to get a good look ... because that is their biggest thing a coach can affect. We as fans don't have advanced information about each possession, and we usually like stats to compare players against each other. So, we care more about Player A vs Player B.
For comparison Durant averages 1.6 points per 1 shot. Lebron 1.46 points per 1 shot. 20 points on 20 attempts with no freethrows is TS% 50. Only Washington got worse TS% as a team(49.9).
why should free throws not count - getting to the line, getting the other team in foul trouble is a productive, positive activity for your team. I'd rather have Harden get to the line and draw teh foul than make a pull up 20 footer.
It's really accurate. I'd much rather someone have 14 on 8 FGA shooting 25% then someone scoring 8 on 8 shooting 50%.
One point per shot is efficient in a streetball game, but relative to other NBA players, it leaves a lot to be desired and takes away more efficient baskets from other team-mates.
I've never understood why exactly you multiply FTA by 0.44. What is the reason behind this? Who decided that is the proper way to quantify the value of free throws? I liken this to ESPN's QBR rating scale, which tries to quantify a QB's worth by weighing the value of plays based on the situation in the game (1st quarter TD vs. 4th quarter of close game, etc.). How can you possibly quantify that? How can you say that a touchdown at this moment of the game is worth 2x, 3x, 4x, another touchdown?
I look at overall efficiency. Shooting percentages are only a small piece to the puzzle. On a very off shooting night Lebron is more efficient than Kevin Martin on his best shooting night. He he can get others easy shots and he rebounds the ball. Even when he can't rack up big assist and rebound numbers, he limits the other team's scoring and is capable of making dificult shots at crucial moments of a game when their offense stalls. This era's fans have become so infatuated with simple shooting percentages that they've become arrogant enough to think they can pick and choose who's the "better" player on one stat or that they know more about basketball than respected tenured coaches.
Efficiency is useless if you dont play a lick of defense. Nash for years hovering around 50% FG shooting, 90% Free throw shooting, 40% 3point shooting and what does he have to show for it despite playing alongside Hall of Fame players like Dirk, Amare, Marion? Nothing
So let's say a player was 2-8 FG/FGA and 10-12 FT/FTA and they scored 14 points on 8 FGA shooting 25% like you suggested. You also have to realize that while the 12 FTA didn't technically count as shots, they do take up possessions. It's basically as if the guy shot the ball 14x (because in reality, he did). Sure, he was rewarded with free throws on 6 of those shots, and he did score the points from the line, but it is basically like scoring 14 points on 14 shots. Another player who shoots the ball 14x hits 7-14 and also scores 14 points. Yet his TS% would be 50% whereas the first player would be 52.7%. I just don't see how the first player is more efficient or valuable to his team. I realize that FT's are better in some ways because most players will score at a higher % from the line than they would shooting FG's, but I just don't feel like TS% is a great measure. I'm just offering my viewpoint, and maybe this isn't a good way to look at it, so please enlighten me if this is foolish thinking.
This is true, and something I didn't think about. Still not sure that it makes him "more efficient." Still don't know why FTA are multiplied by an arbitrary value of 0.44.
Efficiency in basketball is points scored per possession. Individually, you could find the points a player is responsible for and the possessions the player is responsible for (need to figure out how to divide up team possessions among the players which can be tricky) and then take the ratio. That's essentially what individual ORTG does. That's a general efficiency stat but its complicated to calculate. A simplified version just takes into account points scored, FGA, FTA, and turnovers. Its sometimes called PPP: PPP = pts / (fga + .44*fta + tov) Here are all the players who've played at least 500 minutes this season ranked by PPP: Code: Rk Player Team PS PPP 1 chandler, tyson
