I know. Mentioning Bush was kind of off the subject. I should have said Bush's overall incompetence and GOP demagoguery on immigration have driven him from their party.

Lou Dobbs would pay thru the nose to get help to shovel horse manure out of his daughter's riding stable.

This is probably the first time I somewhat agree with TJ. I'm all for immigration, I just want to be legal and controlled. We need to beef up the system so we can get these guys documented and keep the potential bad guys out.

You sound different when you're not copying and pasting. :p

Do you know the percentage of the unemployed who are over-qualified for the jobs that would open up? The percentage who can't work because of disabilities? The percentage who are in-between jobs? What happens to the left over 4.4 million jobs if every unemployed person became employed? Do those unfilled jobs affect the availability of the other 7.6?

They get educated now? In what? Gardening? Construction? Dish washing? Baby-sitting? Toilet scrubbing?

They disregard laws? The only law they disregard is the one the entire country disregards, besides that one, studies have shown that they are the least likely segment of the population to commit a crime.

Insurance? Well, if they were allowed driver's licenses they would be able to buy insurance, until then, get full coverage.

And that video? An ******* picking on a poorly educated and unprepared lady, what exactly does it add to this discussion?

You are talking about illegal jobs that pay illegal wages and have illegal working conditions. The entire country isnt disregarding the laws, but only the liberals are supporting it. Many companies do follow the laws then go out of busies because they can not compete with the illegal labor. This is not about legitimate work. What does the video add? True insight to the mindset of the illegal invaders.

You don't get 12 million people in a country illegally without a de-facto policy in place to disregard immigration laws.

George W. Bush and John McCain are not liberals.

    That lady is American.

I'm not talking about illegal jobs. For instance, I'm talking about jobs at restaurants that pay minimum wage. That restaurant owners can't keep filled even when reports of joblessness are increasing. It's absolutely legit work.

    George W. is a liberal?

So she says. She doesn't act or think like an American.

You get 12 million here illegally because of a disregard and abuse of our laws period.

Are the people who disagree with you in this thread acting or thinking like an American?

Can a law be a law if it's not enforced?

Of course you don't want to talk about the illegal jobs. Get rid of welfare and you will see them fill. Maybe some of college kids can work there instead of giving them "community service". I washed dishes to get though school. If it is such legit work why can't the bathrooms at Taco Bell stay clean? Why are all the American kids just working at Starbucks? This is a joke.

Viva Mexico" is Mexican, not American. "They" live out of "us". Wouldn't "they" be "us" if she thought like a American? Give it up, please. You are an embarrassment.

LMAO. Good one. You simultaneously support the Big Business wing of the Republican Party (who love illegals since they help the bottom line) and the Social Conservative wing of the Republican Party (who hate the dirty brown illegals since that is what Jesus would do).

I know this might be confusing, since Big Business loves illegal aliens and is likely voting for Obama this time round ... but ... Big Business is usually more conservative than liberal.

I don't think I have commented much on illegal immigration-

Immigration is a legal issue not an economic issue.

I have been a missionary in a third world country and I cannot imagine why I would violate their law, certainly not to be a minister in that country.

My son was a missionary in New Zealand of all places and he had to leave the country when his visa expired. I would have been disappointed if he had purchased an illegal visa just to remain in the country.

My personal feeling is that we should determine how we can best help the disadvantaged in Mexico who are trying to find a better life and determine the best way to serve them- legally.

I don't think a country's borders should be open, but I don't think the compassion of Americans should be closed.

I am a US citizen because my grandfather came across from Mexico illegally.

Why don't we try to understand how we can best serve the Mexican population that wants US citizenship and how to legally love our neighbors to the south.

As far as those who are here illegally. We should treat them as neighbors- if we had sensible, legal workable borders the future could be better for both of our countries. I don't think pulling off of the borders and letting anyone and everyone come across would help anyone.

I understand that some people rob stores out of desparation and even steal because of financial pressures. I also understand that some people cheat on their spouses because they are in a very difficult marriage. I also know many people who do illegal drugs just to cope with traumatic circumstances. I know many who abuse because they were abused.

Point is we don't need to excuse illegal behavior just because the circumstances seem to dictate. We need to find the solutions to the problems that are destructive to the opportunities and lives of people.

    1. Why are the opportunities for Mexicans better in the US? Can that be changed? How could border states in both countries work in partnership with each other to promote economic conditions?
    2. How many immigrants from Mexico could we accommodate and how do we work with the Mexican government to find the right number.
    3. Can we change immigration laws to reflect the ammount of immigrants that should be allowed to enter the US?
    4. If it is good to increase immigration from Mexico how can it be facilitated so that there is opportunity to those in Mexico who would benefit the most?
    5. What technology could be used to secure the borders compassionately and legally?
    6. There should be a group of wise men amongst that mess in Washington DC who could work with the border states, those within the Mexican community, business representatives, and local communities who could sit down and come up with an equitible plan for those who are here illegally.

It really isn't hard to find out who is illegal, it happens alot where I work.
Here is one plan just off the top of my head-

    1. First we now have the technology to do a one time social security number check with the SSA database to verify every SS# for every worker on a company payroll. This is already done by SSA backwards through filing of W2's. But it could easily be altered to check every number for every worker through a one month payroll period. (It can now be done voluntarily by a Company using the SS database online) This would surprisingly catch a huge number of invalid SS#'s. I know because we have this happen where I work. Only it is pretty much happens a couple of years after the fact.

The way this would work is that each Company would be notified of each undocumented worker.

The Company could then be given the option of purchasing (pay for) a citizenship package that included typical citizenship training, language training and a fee for immigration to keep the employee. This would answer the question of how valuable the illegal immigrant is to the economy. A Company could literally buy citizenship for workers that needed it. The illegal could also be given the option of purchasing citizenship. Those Companies who valued the worker would be happy to keep them and pay. Those companies who didn't would lose the worker and that illegal could be given the opportunity to keep his job and purchase it for himself. Alot of companies might not want to pay, but that is the only way to know how valuable illegal immigrants are to the economy. Before reacting to this read on because if the number of immigrants allowed legally was raised considerably this would not spell doom necessarily to those caught.

I know for a fact that my company has had workers we would have payed to keep if there had been a reasonable cost and way to do it. I would think $500.00 would be very reasonable to pay one time to invest in a long term employee whose earnings are less than $10 per hour and $1000.00 would be reasonable to keep an employee who earns on average more than $10 per hour. These are just off the top guesses but this could be worked out.

    2. Second, change the new hire laws to include a SS # verification. This would eliminate alot of the problems since this would require double numbers or undocumented numbers to be immediately flagged. Then companies could decide to hire based upon providing the cost of citizenship. Payrolls could easily be monitored by SS#.

    3. Third, set up the severest penalties for those employers who pay in cash.
The easiest way to enforce this is to offer a very nice bonus with complete anonymity like crime stoppers. If there was an offer of $1000.00 for information leading to the uncovering of an illegal hire most employers would be under pressure to do it right. It would not be hard to have an immigration hot line and enough enforcement officers to investigate employers who use cash, the local SS admin already has the staff for it. And if you want to have a legal immigration program it would be worth any additional cost.

    4. There should be a safe return policy. In other words if an illegal worker cannot find a job then they would be given assistance to return to their home country. Also if there are special medical needs there should be a negotiation with the Mexican govt. to subsidize the expense of returning people healthy and with dignity.

    5. Increase the number of legal immigrants allowed so there is only a very small initial correction to current communities. The number should be pretty much close to the estimates we currently have. Then determine the compassionate number of immigrants to accept each year. Increasing this number to an equitible and sustainable number would also mean that an equitible and proper citizenship program we formulated. We should have legal immigrants not illegal immigrants.

Most immigration problems can be found through changes to hiring laws. Right now we don't have to check SS numbers to determine a legal hiring. The I-9 is not really useful. I have hired many people with illegal SS cards. If it is caught it is usually caught by examination of the W2 filed and that is not watched very closely.

I believe there can be a plan so that immigrants can have access to the opportunities of this country without breaking laws and working deceitfully to help better themselves and their families.

All of that is right off the top of my head and in no means is meant to be a proper solution.

But certainly a good solution is out there that is humane, kind and just. :)

No one ever thinks of the school districts.

How much of the school districts' limited resources is going to support 'ESL' and the subsequent 'ED' categories?

Within another couple of years, the MAJORITY of the students in the largest districts in the state will be populated by students who either don't speak English at all, or who cannot speak and read it well enough to be attending school at their supposed grade level. And the majority of these students will be coming from low-income, multi-child dwellings which generate little to no tax revenue to pay for their schooling.

School districts are going bankrupt, people.

This is a direct result of rampant illegal immigration.

Do I favor deportation of these millions of people? No. But I DO favor requiring a person to be able to prove citizenship in order to transfer US dollars out of the country, I do favor requiring citizenship of the parents in order for the children to receive a free taxpayer-funded education, and I do favor requiring citizenship before receiving 'free' medical care at our dwindling number of emergency rooms. And I ESPECIALLY believe that non-citizens should not be able to bring lawsuits in our courts.

Illegals benefit in very few ways from being here illegally. They often get ripped off by unscrupulous 'employers' who will call in an INS raid just before payday, they are often forced to work for far below minimum wage, and they are far easier to victimize because they are afraid to call the police for fear of being deported.

The naturalization process in this country is FAR too time-consuming and restrictive. This process needs to be changed, and changed immediately, so that those already here can become citizens quickly and relatively painlessly.

But I do not favor amnesty for those who decide that breaking the law is an 'ok' thing to do. They don't need amnesty and should not be given amnesty.

We simply need to make it clear through a large and focused information campaign that by such-and-such date, illegals must apply for citizenship under the new streamlined rules, or else they may very well be deported. We MUST close the border to stop the current flow of illegals, and have those who want to come live here go through proper channels.

And rules will still apply - no convicted criminals, no one with communicable diseases, and no one who cannot pass at least a basic check into their credentials. And absolutely no more 'automatic citizenship' for children born here of illegals.

I don't think that sounds too unreasonable. The people who are already here, should probably stay, unless they refuse to become legal even with a streamlined system. But does anyone honestly believe that it is best to let the constant stream of new illegals continue? It has to stop.

An American can't have that mindset? Why not? After all, the term "Hispanic" is used to classify Americans and foreigners so long as they have a parent with a Spanish last name or come from a Spanish speaking country. In that way, why is it so outrageous that an American can feel a connection with a foreigner when their own country believes they are connected?
