Offensive regression is not as big an issue because it did not exist on a team basis.

Defensive regression is an issue because it exists.

Is it a trend or an outlier?

Rockets defensive efficiency in the Harden era: 18th, 13th, 10th, and 20th.

Whatever it is, it shows that Dwight Howard was a colossal waste of money.

Yep, I agree. I think ultimately it's correct that our defense is worse (mainly transition D and guarding 3pters), but there are some things our offense are doing that's pretty bad

The Rockets woes really began when Kelvin Sampson left.

    And rebounds...

But IMHO more importantly: the usage of our superstar forced him to do less on defense.

I'm not saying offensively we have more issues than defensively, but I do maintain that improving our offensive system is going to be a key into righting this ship.

Adding a new defensive big and a firebreathing coach? I have ZERO belief that that will help us win a title, as James simply can't do it alone. So what we have left is again the most disgustingly ugly offense in the leagyue, disapointed fans and people clamoring for James head.

There's a reason James struggles relatively in the Play offs. The higher focus combined with the predictability makes him much less effective.give him a better system and I am certain he will be less prone to being shut down for stretches.

I do not believe this is just a talent issue. If the whole team regresses (less ball movement) it's rather unlikely all players suddenly are over the hill.

I think what a lot of people don't realize is that we get steals because we gamble a lot, not because we are necessarily good at stealing. Kinda like how we take the most threes but we aren't really good at that either. The Rockets are a team that constantly tries to do things they aren't good at and it's the reason for our bad season among other things. All that gambling leads to a horrible defense. You can just see the breakdowns and the leads slipping away every time Brewer steps on the court because he refuses to stay solid always looking for a steal when he has no business. They act as if they are all faster than anyone in the league. Harden, Ariza, Bev, especially Brewer are all guilty of this. I've even seen Dwight do it. I bet cash money that our coaching staff told them to do it.

What if the real problem is that they aren't wearing the right socks?

Op has got a point, ive never seen so many stupid threes clank the front of the rim and bounce toward the opponents basket to start their transition fastbreaks for layups.

Maybe a better offense would lead to some better defense, who knows.

The Rockets lack fundemental basketball skills and teamwork with too much counter-party risk. There is a heavy reliance on points based purely on the split decision-making of the officials. This method stagnates the flow of the game.

Being involved on the offensive end helps players get into a rhythm and this helps on the defensive end by maintaining a synergistic focus on the game as a whole.
