Yah, that had to be one of the stupidest moves ever. But if we did draft Roy..MAYBE Bonzi would be playing more? I know we only have him this one year but who knows what would have happened.
No, I definitely understand Roy's game. I watched him a lot at Washington. He is a good all-around offensive player. He is a very good playmaker and an efficient scorer as a guard. But his defense is mediocre now and will top out at decent. Offensively, he's probably most similar to Hinrich, but he's not close to Hinrich defensively. (Both are efficient scorers from everywhere, have a point guard mentality, but not quite good enough ballhandler to play PG full-time.) I don't think you understand what Battier does for the team. The ability to virtually take out the opposing team's best swingman is a huge part of what makes the Rockets as good as they are defensively. He takes the Rockets from a good defensive team to the best defensive team. Battier is worth more point differential than Roy would be. It's not a good enough reason to question him, but the biggest knock on Roy was his durability. He's already been injured this year.
Yes, that is why they wanted him so bad. Roy is one of those rare rookies who thinks two steps ahead of everyone else. Very talented and very smart. For those of you who think his stats are overrated I don't blame them but Roy would average as much as he needs to because he can be a role player as well. That was another reason the Rocket's were so high on him and everyone else was a little luke warm. They asked the question, "yeah but will he be a star". The Rockets did not need that, all they needed was a talented scorer who can create for others and play solid defense. I have no doubt that Roy would have been a great fit on this team, however our depth would not have been as great as it is now and that is especially scary considering Roy's injury history(even some injuries this year).
This is such a stupid statement. First of all the money that first round rookies make is set by their draft position. We dont dictate how much we pay them, so its not like CD and JVG would pay Roy an absurd price. He gets the same pay whether he was a rocket, blazer, or anyone else. Then of course there is the blanket statement that JVG does not play rookies or young players. Last year Head got plenty of minutes. Yes it was due to injuries, but he still played even when we had Derek Anderson, JB and Moochie Norris, the so called veterans that JVG always goes with. This year, Head and Hayes have major minutes despite being very young players. JVG played Yao when he took over the team even though Yao was a young player. Do you really think the two rookies who are on the team right now and not playing would make that big a difference this year. Novak and Vspan have done little to prove they should get more minutes, but of course it is JVG and not their inability to contribute this year that is keeping them on the bench. I am very happy we ended up with Shane and without Stro. But i guarantee if Roy were available and we drafted him, he would be playing this year.
Well we can agree to disagree. IMO Roy has a tremendous potential as a defensive player on top of his offensive skills and would be our 1st choice to man up on a quick big PG or SG going off on us (someone Battier or Tmac are not quite quick enough for, and where Alston is too small for). I think had he been with the Rockets his role would be heavier on defense (Portland more needs his scoring and playmaking), helping setting up the offense (very smart player, excellent handles and decision making--like an extra PG), and provide the 3rd scorer when needed. He is a very unselfish player, in fact more of a role player for Washington until his senior year, and IMO would have been excellent playing off of (and enhancing) Yao and Tmac. His role with the Rockets would be different than it is with the Blazers, and I think he would adapt to that role until Tmac fades and we needed him to be the next torch bearer. And I like SB a lot. But Roy is a special young unselfish player with a ton of talent and a complete game.
If Roy keeps progressing, I don't think so. Portland will offer fat contract after rookie contract, he'll be one of the players Portland will build around.
If Brandon Roy was on the Rockets, my team on NBA Street Homecourt would have him in a Rockets Jersey. And I'd still get rid of him for someone else as soon as I could. For those of you who play it... Blathersby (100 in Steals, Dunks, Handles, Passing; Master Blocks; 84 Shooting; 87 Speed; 42 Power), Emeka Okafor, Brandon Roy
