    NBA veteran Ceballos
    reinforces Beermen

KWAN Johnson won't be around for San Miguel Beer when it faces Coca-Cola Friday night in Game 3 of the Samsung-PBA Reinforced Conference Finals at the Araneta Coliseum.

But San Miguel Beer fans need not despair.

The Beermen have signed up a pinch-hitter whose credentials are far more superior than those of any other import that have hit town since the league's founding 30 years ago.

Cedric Ceballos, the National Basketball Association's slam-dunk champion in 1992, will reinforce the Beermen, who got ambushed by the Tigers sans Johnson in Wednesday's Game 2, 103-79, to level their best-of-seven series at 1-1.

San Miguel team manager Robert Non said the spring-loaded Ceballos would come in as a temporary replacement for Johnson, who hurt his groin during the Beermen's Game 1 victory Sunday.

Team physicians advised Johnson to rest for at least seven days, forcing the SMB management to look for a worthy replacement.

An 11-year NBA veteran, Ceballos was picked to play in the 1995-96 All-Star Game but begged off at the last minute due to a knee injury.

In a career marked by various lower body injuries, Ceballos was picked 48th overall by the Phoenix Suns in 1990 and traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1994 before being shipped to the Dallas Mavericks in the mid-90s.

The former California State-Fullerton standout left the NBA in 2001 after a stint with Detroit.

Non declined to say whether Ceballos, who is expected to arrive this morning from the United States following a brief stint with the Sioux Falls in the CBA, would play for the remainder of the series.

But the Tigers were unfazed by Ceballos' glittering credentials.

"What's important is who plays on our team and not who will play for San Miguel," said Coca-Cola coach Chot Reyes. "We will focus on the way we play."

Just the same, Tee McClary will have his hands full against Ceballos, who had a career-high 50 points for the Lakers against the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1994.

Of course you are talking about UCLA after Abdul-Jabbar, Jamaal Wilkes, and Bill Walton, right?

Owens was signed by the Grizzlies and spent almost all of last season on IR.

Then the Mavs looked into signing him this season, but he was having some sort of continuing injury problem, so they didn't end up picking him up. Last I read, he hoped to get a shot with Dallas next season.

What about Tyson Wheeler from Rhode Island? He was the point guard on Mobley's team. Had some serious talent in college if I remember right.
