Geez, how could I have forgotten about "Legend" by Bob Marley? Also, I have Duran Duran, OMD, Talk Talk, The Human League, Squeeze, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Naked Eyes, and Soft Cell. Did I mention that I like synth pop music?

Madonna - Immaculate Collection Madonna - Greatest Hits Volume 2 CCR so A-Train, Weird Al doesn't have an official greatest hits anywhere? even though i have like 5 of his albums already (the most of any artist, i guess b/c his stuff is never on the radio), i would definitely get that. i just had to rebuy Immaculate Collection at a Best Buy day after thanksgiving sale for $8 b/c it got stolen last year the day after thanksgiving when some people broke into our unlocked cars on our driveway. favorite album ever.
He actually has two "greatest hits" albums that are mostly older stuff. Plus, there is The Food Album and The TV Album that has his food and TV related songs on it, respectively. If you want a definitive Weird Al collection, definitely drop about $50 and get his boxed set. It has four discs of his stuff up to and including tracks off of Off The Deep End, plus a track he recorded in 1994 called "Headline News", which is a parody of "Hmm Hmm Hmm Hmm" by Crash Test Dummies. It also has the original recording of "My Balogna" that he recorded in the Cal Poly SLO radio station bathroom... "Once there was this guy who made his wife so mad one night that she cut off his weiner..."
That wasn't a greatest hits compilation; it was a box set of 5 CDs that contained singles from "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" and the associated b-sides. Seeing some other posts reminds me: Styx Van Halen The Beatles (Red Album and Blue Album) The Bee Gees (Tales of the Brother Gibb - 4 CD Box Set, and Greatest)
I'm going to make myself look like a fool, but this is really nothing new for me. I've got: Madonna (Immaculate Collection) Gloria Estefan (Greatest Hits) Pet Shop Boys (Discography) Taylor Dayne (Greatest Hits) Jennifer Lopez (J to tha L-O!) Duran Duran (Decade) Kylie Minogue (Ultimate Kylie) Britney Spears (Greatest Hits) I can't believe I just admitted in public that I own a Britney Spears CD!
miles davis - best of blue note years - has my favorite version of the standard "dear old stockholm". miles slows it down and gives it a totally different feel. ive never been to new york, but this whole album gives me that "snowy christmas in manhattan" vibe. miles is the man! the cure - staring at the sea - all their singles thru about 1985, presented chronologically. i love every song on here. after kiss me, kiss me, kiss me this is my most listened to cure record. the cure - mixed up - technically not a "greatest hits" record, as it is all remixes. however, all the songs on here were "hits" in their original form so thats good enough for me. i know alot of cure purists who hate this record, but ive always liked it. they probably didnt make new fans off this, but there's some really interesting versions on here. best of the velvet undergound - everyone i knew in college had this. simple, fantastic, primal rock songs. these guys pretty much invented indie rock. i never liked the velvet underground till i heard this on mushrooms. been a fan ever since... james brown - 20 all time greatest hits - all the funky hits. more than once, this cd helped keep me awake through the end of some long road trips.
Hmmm. You know, all I can think of is an Otis Redding box set and a couple of Earth Wind and Fire compilations. I'm not much of a 'greatest hits' guy I guess. I think it's a conspiracy by record companies to squeeze more cash out of us. Besides if I reallly like a band, I already have every song they've ever recorded. I like full albums. You miss out on too many gems by not buying them.
People- you are forgetting Queen's Greatest Hits (original edition) . The compilation before they reissued it into 3 seperate volumes full of filler. So many hits...
Do live albums count, cause I have quite a few DMB live albums and one from Pearl Jam. Otherwise, only: CCR - Chronicle vol. 1 Counting Crows - Films About Ghosts
If you are referring to "Queen's Greatest Hits" (red cover), I have that along with "Classic Queen" (blue cover). However, I may be thinking of something that came along later as I know there are only like 100 Queen compilations on the market.
Good thread, Manny... I shy away from Greatest Hits albums for a couple different reasons. If it's a band I'm interested in, but have none of their albums I fear if I get the 'greatest hits' I'll miss lot's of good songs and the continuity an LP brings. Yeah, once I get that greatest hits I don't trust myself to by the original lp's. Secondly, if it's a band I already like, chances are I already have those songs and can make my own greatest hits tape. That said, there are those like: Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady Morrisey - Bona Drag The Who - Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy where much of the content is rare, on singles only, or on that lp only.
