Not just that, but a lot of other factors, like how strong the other team's first unit is and how much time the player is on the court against them.

For example, in the denver game sengun was -8, which would reflect as a big difference in the on/off ratings. But sengun was on the court at all times with Jokic. And Jokic fives play much better than fives without jokic. Did Sengun have a negative impact on the team?
Not at all, in fact if you look at Denver's performance compared to other games, the starting 5 of Denver fell from 45.5 net rating to 5.6 net rating. Sengun along with the other players he was on court with did an amazing job, but they were still a negative on the court. While the second unit reversed that by beating their second unit. Green who ran the second unit successfully ended up with a +10.

Comparing to replacements who play against different 5s without taking into account how the opponent team performs relative to their performance against the rest of the league and on top of that using a team stat to do that can hardly say anything about individual performance. A lot of context needed to make any comment on player performance using this.

 

Alpi has one of the highest net ratings on the team though.

Yes because the first unit has been performing extremely well. And of course the lineup stats are correlated to personal performance, so it is not like, they contain no info.

But it is wrong to think that for example, making up numbers, if alpi is 8.9 and fred is 6.6, alpi has more positive impact on the team. That difference is utterly meaningless. A deep dive into the 5 man lineups where the players get their +/- stats is always necessary. Only then you might be able to say something.

And imo it is better to look at what happens when they are on the court rather than the on/off stat, because you never replace just one player, and even in that case it depends heavily on the replacement. And also you should consider how the opponent 5s are doing relative to their performances against other teams.

 

Believe in TEAM over GLORY and good things will happen. Udoka has a big brain on him. Good to see the players buy in. Sustainability can be achieved as long as the egos are kept at bay.
