This is the easy way out of the argument. I am all about parental responsibility. But your analogy is ludicrous. This is not like watching p*rn. Anybody with a radio can turn this crap on.

It is MUCH easier to not allow your kid to buy Grand Theft Auto III than it is to be with your kid at all times there is a radio around.

By the way...show us a channel listing that is not pay per view where your kid can just flip on p*rn at 8am.

Howard Stern, is remarkably unfunny... But as much as I dislike Stern, I dislike Clear Channel even more.

I'm curious why Clear Channel suddenly decided Howard Stern was inappropriate for their station. As people have said, he's been doing the same stuff for 20 years. Clear Channel is being very hypocritical. They started broadcasting him and when he was making money for them he was aparently not making them a " poster child for indecency." As soon as trouble starts brewing, he's not up to the moral standards of the station and all DJs are on their own. Give me a break.

    Two words:

    Janet Jackson

Ever since her little stunt at the superbowl, The FCC has been on a rampage and putting pressure on media in all directions.

And even without that pressure, Jackson's stunt brought a LOT of attention and bad press to broadcast indecency. A lot of companies were/are getting a lot of bad PR because of her, and Clear Channel is jumping on the 'clean up your act' badwagon.

Problem is, there are all sorts of standards. To you, Stern is bad for 6th graders. Fine. To me, it doesn't so much bother me if my kids (ages 15 and 10) were to listen to Stern, other than the fact that I would hope they'd want to listen to something that was actually funny.

Their mother and step-father, on the other hand, have an extremely strict view toward entertainment options. In their world, The Simpsons would not be allowed to be broadcast into anyone's home (especially on a Sunday). My kids are not allowed to watch it in their home (though they do watch it with me). They even forbid the kids to watch "That's So Raven" on Nickelodeon, not because it's a stupid show, but because they believe it promotes witchcraft (the Raven character is apparently psychic or something. I'm not about the watch the show to find out).

So which parents do you want to get to make the rules on what does or doesn't get broadcast over the air? Because if it's my ex-wife and her husband, there's not going to be much worth watching anymore. And, believe it or not, there are a whole lot of people just like them.

    Two words. Re-election.

    (OK, maybe that's one word.)

There are people who think they can get re-elected playing up this 1950's crap.

    Howard Stern is crap.
Clear Channel has made millions and millions off of Howard with stupid Howard doing the same stupid stuff, but now they think it's in their interest to act "shocked and dismayed" at his antics.

American hypocrisy on display at it highest level.
I would puke, but the Administration has left me with an empty stomach.

What exactly is going on with this? Stern is saying...

*he will be off the air in a month. That he will be fined by the FCC for indecency.

*CBS will initially try to defend Stern from the accusations, but probably won't do so for very long.

*When CBS gives, they will fire Stern.

*He gave a profile of the Kansas Senator that is 'spear-heading' this. I haven't heard more details on this. Supposedly this guy has been contacting CBS and Clear Channel questioning why he was still on the air.

    And from what I understand:

    1. Other small market DJs are also getting fired; some 'Bubba the Love Sponge' show (??) the only 'big' example.

    2. The FCC deemed Stern's show a 'news program', allowing them to set different regulations to it.

    And in another interesting note:
    FCC starts rewriting Internet rules
Agency to regulate Internet phone calls

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Regulators agreed Thursday to set rules for telephone calls made online, and for technology to allow computer users to reach the Internet through a household electric outlet.

The Federal Communications Commission said it would decide how to regulate calls made via high-speed Internet connections, which bypass at least part of the conventional phone network.

Among the issues to be discussed is whether such calls should be subject to the same fees as regular telephone service, such for 911 emergency services or bringing telephone service to poor and rural areas, schools and libraries. Also to be decided is whether these new services need to pay fees to local telephone companies to complete calls to conventional phones.

Separately, the FCC said it would later develop rules concerning law enforcement, such as making sure that the technology that allows Internet calls also allows investigators to tap and trace them.

The commission also voted to develop rules that would allow the power lines that bring electricity to homes and businesses to also deliver high-speed Internet connections.

Once a utility or a company it contracts with installs the necessary equipment, a computer user would only have to plug the machine into a special modem that plugs into a conventional electric outlet, according to Jay Birnbaum, vice president of Current Technologies, a company now testing such connections in the Washington suburbs.

Even as it develops rules governing Internet phone calls, the commission decided that one such service, Free World Dialup, was not subject to the same regulations as regular phones. Internet users can join Free World Dialup at no cost and make calls to each other without using the conventional phones. They use special numbers to route the calls rather than 10-digit phone numbers.

Sounds like the FCC's been busy lately.

Stern has transformed his website into the single best web repository of examples showing how stupid George W Bush is, along with a daily summary of his show.

Also, where else are we going to see a picture of Henry Hill from Goodfellas fame?

Check out the bad American Presidents song.

Yes, of course. it is up to YOU to monitor and control what your children can watch, not the government.

Yes, if you are concerned about it, use the parental lock feature on your cable box or satellite receiver.
