The 6-7, 240 is what Purdue listed him as during his 3 years there; which is why I originally threw my hands up in disgust when we got him. I thought we were gonna go with 6-6 & 6-7 at the 4. However when he was listed at 6-9 at predraft camp, I thought he might survive since he did have a mid range game at Purdue. Then we traded for Scola & I knew we'd be OK at the 4. I saw the Spurs game the other night & couldn't believe the hops Landry showed. I don't think he spent that much time in the air his whole college career. I think Landry & Scola will do well now as our backup 4/5 and one of them will be our starting 4 of the future.
In Morey's radio interview yesterday , he said this about Landry: "He was a player we thought would have gone much higher in the draft, if he hadn't gotten injured. He had an ACL injury his junior year at Purdue, and before that he was playing out of his mind. Our medical people felt his repair was one of the best they had ever seen. He's just slowly worked his way back to what we had seen when he was younger, in his ealier days in Purdue. Every day in practice, it's funny, Coach Sikma would say, "hey, this guy is just destroying everybody in practice ... maybe we should get him in the game," and coach Adelman finally got him in there, and he's so far he's played great in every minute he's had. He's got a long way to go as a rookie. It's a big difference getting him in for a few minutes and doing well, and getting consistent minutes where teams begin to key in on, but one step at a time ... we're real happy with his development so far." -------------- I have to hand it to Morey. I was upset we drafted Landry over Baby Glen Davis, when hardly anyone had Landry high on their lists. When I found out it was because of injury, it worried me more. Then I saw a couple interviews, where he sounded totally clueless. Then he didn't play well in summer league. I was not impressed. I worried that Morey hadn't upgraded our scouting system, which has drafted terrible for so many years. Then when Brooks broke out during the summer, I thought that was a lucky fluke, because of Adelman watching him this last year, and was due to the Coach's eye, not our scouts. But, to hear that Morey had researched his injury and dug deeper than everyone else, THIS is what I thought we brought him here for, hoping he could see things other GMs didn't, giving us a leg up on the competition. To hear he was playing out of his mind as a junior at Purdue, find he's been destroying everyone in practice, and see him playing so well with the minutes he's gotten ... my ... I am impressed. My hats off to Morey, however great Landry turns out. Its nice to know we now have a staff that can get value out of the end of the first, early part of the second round, like San Antonio, Dallas and LA do every year. (Of course, I have to remember last year was a great draft.) So, did anyone see Landry "playing out of his mind" at Purdue?
Landry's just needs to bulk up. His challenge will be putting on the weight but training to keep his speed/athleticism as he does.
reminds a lot of Othela Herrington and Kenny THomas. More athletic than Herrington ( some type of hustle maybe more) and thomas, but less offensive skills than thomas. so somewhere in between those two.
His rotation and substitution patterns appear erratic and unpredictable. I wouldn't be surprised to see Snyder go 40 mins in the next game. Adelman has been a huge disappointment in many ways. I don't know if he is totally to blame, but the team looks disorganized much of the time. His demeanor "appears" very detached and, at times, almost disinterested. I can't figure this guy out. The starting lineup is the greatest mystery. For example, after Rafer's two weeks of glory he is back to his typical pattern of 40 min, more shots that Yao, and a blazing 30%. Wow, we need more of that. As to Landry, I really like the kid. I would play him more. He is clearly better offensively than Hayes.
I agree.. maybe because of Tmac's situation but it seems like Adelman can't make up his mind what he wants his rotation to be. Luther went from playing what? like nearly 30 minutes a night to 5 today?? I understand that tmac is going to take some of head's minutes, but seriously only 5 for the whole game?
From what I hear about Landry, he's got the work ethic to imrpove his game. He needs to become a better defender. He is a little undersized, which will prevent him from becoming a starting caliber PF in the western conference. However, if he works hard to improve his game, there is no reason why he can't have a long career in the NBA.
Like the legendary Bruce Lee once said "his style is no style". I think Adelman really took to that quote and decided to play whatever fits the situation. Heck, he doesn't have a set substitution. He just plugs guys in whenever they can be most effective. In fact, I think it's great. He's playing towards people's strength unless Van Gundy who tries to shove his system down everyone's throat. As for Landry, I really don't see him being any better than a Stomile Swift type of player with a higher IQ. The ONLY reason we're so happy for him is because we had ZERO expectations for this guy coming into the season. We didn't even know if he was gonna play at all. The only reason he's seeing action is due to the ineffectiveness of our starters and "certain" backups. He's contributing and he's being efficient in the minutes given to him. Which is good. The rookie is hungry and he's playing out of his mind. Whether or not this will equate to consistency and higher level of play shall be a work in progress. I have trouble seeing Landry as anything more than a solid complimentary role player. He will give you hustle and few highlight dunks a night and that's it. He doesn't have a consistent midrange jumper. But if he develops that, we maybe talking about a starter role down the road.
No. YOU don't get it. He is just shy of being an effective PF but give him a pair of Dr. Scholl's shoe inserts and he will be a Karl Malone/Charles Barkley/Amare clone. 1/4 inch goes a long way in the NBA or at least in the mind of some young fans. LOL
Carl was the best player on the floor in college 95% of the time. The only reason we got him when we did was because of the knee surgery. The longer he stays healthy the more likely it is that we picked up two of the biggest steals in the draft....and traded nothing for Scola. Carl is 6'9" 250 with bigtime hops and skills to go with it.He can definitely play the 4 and probably some 3 too. Go Rockets!
Carl was impressive tonight. Well, I believed he should have more shots to if he can retain his 75%FG and he should hit 20pts soon if he get 5-10 shots.
I haven't been watching Rockets games lately, but how's his defense? It's obvious from the box score that the kid knows how to score. But is he a detriment on the other side of the court right now? Because if he isn't, then he pretty much needs 20+ minutes on the floor right now.
I don't really get the undersized knock really. Al Harrington, David West, Ryan Gomes, Kenyon Martin, Elton Brand, Shawn Marion, Nick Collison, Carlos Boozer, Lamar Odom are the same size or smaller. They are the starting PFs for most of the Western Conference teams.
