God expects us to submit to the vagaries of The Market economy. Any attempt to emeliorate human suffering that might be caused by the losers in The Market is against The Market and therefore impermissible. It is ok to read the Bible, pray and be against abortion as long as it does not try to interfere with The Market. Signed, Contemporary conservative US Christianity.
You'd be surprised at how fondly older Chinese feel about Mao. Not because Mao is a saint, but rather he actually delivered on his promise to the people. He brought peace and allowed people to live a life. Not a good life mind you. But considering what the Chinese people had been through up to that point(Opium Wars, internal warlords struggle, feudal system, Japanese occupation), they felt it was an incredible life. Chinese "atheists"(although many still had traditional leanings towards various pagan/Buddhist deities) weren't really materialistic. If anything, they were much less so than American "Christians". They demanded very little and were satisfied with just basic necessities. They lived a very humble and simple lifestyle. They don't lock their doors, know all their neighbors, and won't even blink to loan some money to friends(without the need for IOUs!). Oddly enough, sounds like how Christians are supposed to live.
In another vein. I don't feel God is concerned with us as individuals. Being raised as a strict, yet politically liberal Catholic on the Social Gospel I try to run my life generally as I was taught.
