Here's the official word. http://www.statesman.com/sports/content/sports/stories/longhorns/01/04/4vince.html For the first three years of the Texans' existence, KEYE aired every Texans game it could and did the same until December 2005, the Texans' fourth season. That year, a dismal season for Houston, KEYE eventually yielded to the clamoring of fans who wanted to see games that mattered more in the playoff races. "This year things have been complicated by the Vince Young factor," Vinson said. For purpose of TV ratings, Austin has 589,000 households. Vinson said, "We get in the 20,000s for the Texans." For the Titans' game on Oct. 8, when Young was named the starter, KEYE's broadcast attracted 53,000 households. "Most of the Titans games were in the 50,000 to 60,000 range," said Vinson. That would translate to about a 10 Nielsen rating. "We're trying to give viewers what they want to see," Vinson said. "They were clearly showing us by their choices." He added, "Our primary goal is to build the Texans. When we start next year, we'll start with a Texans game." It will be interesting to see how long KEYE can stick with that game plan since there are no signs that Young's popularity is waning in Austin, where No. 10 is still No. 1.
I want them to draft Joe Thomas, sign Dwight Freeney, Nate Clements, and Jerry Porter, and draft a linebacker with their 2nd round pick, and a safety with a 3rd round pick. If Thomas isn't there at #1, then trade down for two lower picks, and draft an offensive tackle and Okoye with those picks.
I read that this morning. However, you're still missing my point. I want the Texans to sign up a RADIO STATION to broadcast their games. At least then there would be no arguments as to who they're supposed to play. Besides, I like Mark Vandermeer much better than any of the tv commentators we're forced to hear on a weekly basis. Besides, that's a bunch of BS from KEYE. "Our primary goal is to build the Texans." HORSE S***! Your primary goal is to do what's best for KEYE. They couldn't care less about the Texans.
Not one for conspiracy theories, but this is completely accurate. KEYE is a business and they MUST do what is best for the bottom line. To spin they line he spun was just that--BS spin.
True, and whats good for KEYE is having a Texans team worth showing but they aren't so they have to show another team. The Texans have not done jack **** to try and win markets outside Houston. I've been amazed by this since day one. And this isn't just because they didn't draft VY. Look at the Astros if you want a comparison, the Astros actively try to build and maintain a fanbase outside of Houston the Texans have not. The few times I posted this Houstonians could care less. Eventually you will
dude I watched the Texans when they were on back then, because that's the regional game. The games were not that exciting. Doesn't matter if you like them or not. The Cowboys, on the other hand, people watch. Either because: 1. they really like them 2. they really hate them They stir up interest, good or bad. The TO thing, Parcells, Romo, who Romo's dating etc. The Texans are not stirring up ANY INTEREST outside loop 610. That's not the players fault, that's MANAGEMENTS fault. They had their chance to make a good business decision, but they didn't. Look, say they picked Leinart. That dude's on the tabloids all the time. Reggie Bush is doing Pepsi commercials. Mario Williams maybe the coolest guy in the world, but he's not marketable. Look at the Rockets. where did all these Rocket fans come from? We have marketable players. 1. Yao crosses cultures 2. TMac, proven superstar regardless if we lose by 40pts, people still watch Hell, sign TO if the Cowboys cut him, guarantee you the Texans will get more interest
Hey, I never disagreed with that. They made a business decision--the same one I would have made. You don't have a TV station so you can "build the Texans' fan base". You have one to make money. Saying anything otherwise is just sanctimonious gladhanding for the sake of PR, and a shallow effort at that. It is the Texans' job to build their fanbase, and you are correct that they've pretty much struck out to date in doing so. Winning, moreso than signing circus acts like TO or hometown boys like VY, will do so. Let's hope they begin to actually win.
You're totally right. I was dumbfounded by the fact that they have training camp in Houston. Why not try San Antonio or Austin? Why not go out and actually get into the communities outside of Houston? They had theire caravan come through Austin a couple of years ago. I didn't even know they were coming. My wife and I stopped in Dave & Busters for a beer and they were there eating lunch and taking a break. The most recognizable player they had with them was Sloan Thomas...who was cut 1 month later. It was Thomas, the backup long snapper, and a couple others I couldn't recognize. Maybe try bringing some names? The Astros bring Berkman, Milo, and others when they come to town. My only hope is that they someday realize what they're missing out on in Central Texas. Start with a broadcasting deal with an am station. Get the caravan advertised and with players people would want to see. Would 1 training camp outside of Houston hurt? What better way to do spread the name than to have the whole team here practicing & signing autographs?
They should make every effort to draft the best player available, but at the last second they should draft someone I've never heard of
look at the crazy texan fans like some faty dude, if they did anything outside the 610 loop it would anger their crazed followers. they want a team that would never leave houston. like not even sugarland or the woodlands.
They had a sports radio host from the Valley on 610 before the Tennessee game and she said there were a lot of Texans fans down there.
Thats the first I've heard of it. When I went to visit family down in the Valley during the holidays, there are nothing but Cowboys stickers and memorabilia all over the place. My cousins were giving me flack for the Texans not drafting Vince Young. I didn't see any Texans gear whatsoever when I was down there.
If memory serves me correctly Charles Spencer weighed nearly 370 prior to the Texans drafting him and he lost weight at the request of the Texans. Weight is not the primary issue for linemen with the Texans. It's the ability to be agile and get to the second level effectively which Davis can do. The left tackle in this offense like any other is responsible for the Qb's backside and Davis is a mammoth and his pass protection is better than anything else we have or could get in the draft. BTW, I'm not a Texas alum, nor do I care if players reside in, or hailed from Texas. I'm just a Houston sports fan who wants to see the best players on the field which will ideally lead to a winning franchise.
Problem is, Davis has no work ethic...oh yeah...he's not very good either. He's been getting torched since he entered the NFL. Being large and a longhorn just isn't enough. Yeah, he could lose weight. But does he want to? Will he put in the work to do what is necessary? I'd rather they draft someone who already fits what Kubiak wants in a LT instead of trying to fit a very round peg into a square hole.
