Nah, I live in the basement and she has arthritis, so she scarcely makes it down the stairs to interrupt...

I get a swift kick in the nuts by the secretary when I appear to be dozing off at work.

    Ha, talk about irony.

    I second all this.

The parts in bold I've done for myself. Felt fatigued even though I'd sleep plenty. I started running and doing light weights first thing in the morning, partly because my job started later in the day (10-11 am). I drank green tea and drank some water with vitamins a few minutes before the workout and did NOT eat before (except maaybe something very light for a carryover, like you do).

Kept at it and weeks into it was a noticeable increase in energy level. Aided also by eating a little better I also had a "fresh and clean" feeling, like I was naturally detoxed. In fact after a while it felt like I HAD to start the day with exercise to get by, and if I DIDNT I'd feel tired! I worked a physical job at the time and didnt feel much fatigue afterward. (Sometimes I'd even work out AFTER work too but that was just workout obsession and doesnt even benefit much). I eventually scaled back to just doing 3-4 days a week in the mornings. Also very importantly, it helps with sleep in getting the cycle back on track.

Of course its to be mentioned I did shed PLENTY of pounds, and I wasnt even overweight when I started. Basically yes, morning workouts can definitely be effective.
*Word of advice - for cardio or any exercise PLEASE get fitted with proper footwear at the correct size. Improperly fitting shoes can put a heavy toll on the joints)*

I have a morning ritual that I need to share. I call it 'the terminator'. First I crouch down in the shower in the classic 'naked terminator traveling through time' pose. With my eyes closed I crouch there for a minute, visualizing either Arnold or the guy from the second movie (not the chick in the third one because that one sucked) and I start to hum the terminator theme. Then I slowly rise to a standing position and open my eyes. It helps me to proceed through my day as an emotionless, cyborg badass. The only problem is if the shower curtain sticks to my terminator leg. It ruins the fantasy.

Drinking half a cup in the morning and another half during the afternoon reduces the withdrawals. For some people that could mean drinking twice the amount.
