What do you think of the Tyreke Evans 20-5-5 thing last night?

I am not saying Evans has no talent. I am also not saying that Evans doesn't have the potential to improve. I am certainly not saying that Evans is some sort of team cancer or a bad guy.

Like many have said, it's not uncommon for talented young players to have some ball hog tendencys, especially when, frankly, they are the best option on a bad team. Many of them become more efficient as time goes on.

What I am saying, though, is that I don't think the Kings are handling this correctly. Granted, I didn't watch the last game of every talented player's rookie season, but what the Kings were doing just seem kind of over the top and manufactured even compare to usual NBA practice (I mean, the Rockets are hyping AB for MIP to sell, tickets, too). Don't know how many of you caught the game on LP as oppose to the Houston broadcast, but it was just ridiculous how much the Kings announcers talked about Evans.

I mean, Jesus, the guy needed like 20 points in 2 games to achieve 20-5-5. It's not like the thing is in doubt or anything. It was like the Tyreke telethon watching the Kings.

He's a stat queen. He has the potential to make his team better but you know, having numbers got in the way...

He looks like he has potential to be a beast. Besides the stats, he just looks like a really physical guy.

But, really, how said is your season when you get excited about a stat like this?

I've said it before, this guy is very good, he's sick even, and I like how he gets along with his teammates, but I think that he's exactly the type of really talented young guy that you trade as soon as you can. This guy's game will have this team going nowhere fast, just like biatche :p.

I know he was trying to make history and all, but he was literally doing it at the expense of his team winning. Yes they already have a losing season but what does that do for the morale and the philosophy of the team? It's ok to lose as long as Tyreke gets his? It was ridiculous how hard Tyreke was trying to get those points. How much better would it have been if he got his points within the offense and still pulled out a win? That would really shown that he is and can be the leader of the team. The only defense I can see is that he is still a rookie and needs to mature some.

It was pathetic. I know Kings fans haven't had the privilege to witness a player with immense talent for quite some time, but do they have to worship his every move? They're making Tyreke Evans literally the king there. If I were Evans I would be embarrassed by the MVP chants. It's said that Kings fans are a passionate bunch, but pampering your future star like this does no good for the player in the long run imo. Anyone senses a diva in the making? Just watch Tyreke on the court, he calls for the ball on every possession. Udrih/Nocioni aren't that imcompetent with the ball and you don't take the ball out of their hands when they're on a hot streak. It totally kills the offense flow. Also, I've seen several times that Tyreke just hangs out at the 3pt line when he doesn't have the ball in his hands, does that remind you all of somebody?

I might get flamed if Tyreke Evans proves to be the second coming of LeBron, but before reaching that status, get your head down and give your best efforts every game.

I don't know about you guys, but I would never encourage a player to put his own stats over team success.

I didn't really care. It was great to see him set the record and it was nice that the city had something to be excited for. It has been a long season for them so they deserved to cheer for their rookie.

I don't know why so many are hating on him. He is a great player and he will become a better player over time. He is just a rookie for goodness sakes. I'd take him in the Rockets in a heartbeat.

Before I clicked on this, I was expecting to see video of Bob Sura back when he was with the Hawks, where he intentionally missed a shot (i think on the opposing goal too) to get his last rebound

Steve Francis, at one point, was one of only four players to average 15-5-5 his first 6 seasons. The others were Magic, Grant Hill, and Oscar Robertson. Woooo hooooo!

The Steve Francis comparison is more credible than the Lebron/Jordan comparisons. Evans is no LeBron or Jordan.

I think the root problems are that people are obsessed with statistics throughout the basketball world (and really all professional sports) and players are largely rewarded financially and in terms of the attention they receive based on individual numbers.

What we saw last night was a natural byproduct of an increasingly stats-driven sports culture.

Maybe if more Morey types inundate the sports world over time, there will be better stats to measure individuals that are more in line with team goals and these numbers will eventually be as interesting to the average fan as points per game and other such statistics.

I don't blame the Kings, Evans or the fans. That wasn't the first or last time we'll see something like that happen.

I totally agree with the OP and understand his argument.

I just wanted to add that while the degree of last night's focus on Evans' numbers was ridiculous, our own commentators were repeatedly mentioning during games that Brooks was approaching Rockets 3pt records and there were multiple articles about it in the Chronicle. I know that it wasn't an in-game spectacle like what we saw in Sacramento but it got to the point where it had to be hard for Brooks not to think about it during games. Brooks isn't as much of a ballhog as Evans but he does have a tendency to try too hard to score at times so all that talk about records couldn't have been good for him or the Rockets.

Even a guy that is considered as humble and team-oriented as Battier lets his awareness of statistics get in the way of optimal decision-making at times. Didn't Morey once point out that Battier will occasionally pass up on a shot that he should take because he knows that it will hurt his percentages?

Simply put, while neither of these example are anything like that ridiculous display last night, the obsession with statistics by all parties in the sports world is going to have adverse effects on individual play and the game at times. Last night was just one of the more extreme examples.

Not a big deal. If he came down jacking up contested jumpers than that would be something.

He missed a lot of easy shots trying to get the 2 points.
